The GWC rules are ridiculous. They’ve had so many variations of them: 1 attempt, 3 attempts, infinite attempts. Then NASCAR has the balls to say that 2015 Talladega wasn’t an attempt, even though they said for that weekend they would only do one attempt. NASCAR has no idea how the rules even work. And don’t even get me started on the “Overtime Line.” That rule was bullshit.

Alot of folks cite Dale Earnhardt's death as the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of safety. But the HANS device (which some drivers had elected to start using, but Earnhardt did not) wasn't made mandatory until Blaise Alexander's fatal accident in October 2001 in an ARCA race at Charlotte. The last deadly piece of safety mandating that had to happen was spotters being mandatory during test/practice sessions - during ARCA practice at Charlotte in 2002, Eric Martin's car had spun and backed into the turn 4 exit and sat broadside on the racing surface. Deborah Renshaw came off the corner full song and t-boned Eric's stopped car in the driver's side at over 150mph. Renshaw had no spotter on the stand to tell her about the car parked against the turn 4 exit. As far as I know, Eric Martin, to date, is the last driver to die in a US national touring stock car series by cause of an on-track incident.

"A person who throws something on to the racetrack at a car is not a race fan, he's a race idiot."
    - Bob Jenkins
They should have immediately ejected anyone throwing objects on the track from the premises and banned them from visiting for at least 1 year. Maybe even press charges against them for vandalism, reckless endangerment, or property damage.
There is simply no excuse for that behavior in my opinion.

In regards to that 2004 Talladega finish:
What if the other cars that were top 5 late (Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Robby Gordon) had been in the lead when that last caution flew?

Dale Jarrett wrecking at New Hampshire eliminated racing back to the caution flag, leading to the introduction of the “Lucky Dog Award.” If I’m not mistaken, the wreck I’m talking about happened in 2003, during the Fall New Hampshire race.

@@cjfastfoot What's a consequence of saving money from not having to pay for crash damage? Teams being able to put more cars on the track. Cars and teams that provide more room for sponsors to support the sport, which opens the door for more on track entries, which results in a healthier NASCAR long term.
Come to think of it, I think I'd prefer limiting the overtime attempts to just one.
