  • Since the creation of the European Steel and Coal Community in 1952 by six founding members - France, Italy, West Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg - the bloc has undergone major changes.
As decades passed, the body saw 7 enlargements through which 21 new member states were accepted into its ranks, and gradually evolved into what is now known as the European Union.
Interestingly, however, despite successfully joining NATO in 1952, one nation did not manage to end up as a formal member of the EU - Turkey.
Both Ankara and Brussels know that cooperation and a united front are crucial now more than ever.
Why was Turkish accession never completed, was it ever possible? What will change after Erdogan steps down? Join Jan Darasz and his guest Adam Michalski from the Department for Turkey, Caucasus and Central Asia at the Center for Eastern Studies on this episode of How We Got Here to find answers to these and other questions

Please TVP, don't put music on with commentary. It's completely unnecessary, adds nothing but, makes the video unwatchable for many. Only got as far as 2:12 before l had to bail.

As an anti erdogan turk i understand we'll not be accepted with erdogan and find it %100 fair but eu's current visa policy(short stay-touristic) thru turkish citizens is just too malicious. Its literally 6 month process with 500 page of documants and still %25 rejection without showing any reason and no refund. Even turkish artists, bussinesmens, prof sportsmens, academics struggle too much to visit eu zone right now. So which EU value inculde this immoral treatment?

Turkiye will not be admitted to the union even after another 50 years. But why? Let's look at the facts: If Turkiye (with a population even higher than Germany) enters the union, it will be the 'largest' member of the union. In other words, it is not difficult to predict where money will circulate more, and it's not a thing what the Europeans wants. It will cause the center of the union to shift eastward. The 2nd largest army in NATO and the 8th largest army in the world. The 17th economy in the world continue to grow despite high inflation and that can be solved with the right policies. Unlike Europe which has already reached its potential and is aging, they have a real young population with potential. In addition, as the bridge between Asia and Europe, Turkiye will add a global power to its regional power if it strengthens its power. While Europe living its own things, Turkiye started to make its presence felt in the Middle East and Africa. It's like the footsteps of the Ottomans. It is one of the two or three countries that can manage Russia. Europe does not want to borders the Middle East, does not want to deal with refugees and wars. Moreover, Europeans claim that Turkiye is 'the bad boy' because Turkiye does what it wants and refuses to be a puppet of others. Another issue is that even though Turkiye is a secular country, the majority of its people and administrators are Muslims. Do not be fooled by Europe, which claims to always respect differences, they definitely do not like Muslims (when we think about the current situation in the Middle East and other 'Muslim countries', I understand what first comes to mind when Muslims are mentioned; maybe you should ask the oil hunters coming from across the ocean if they did this on purpose.). Long story short, before you list three or five excuses by saying Turkiye is not good enough, evaluate carefully. Ask before listening to those who try to create the perception that 'the problem is in Turkiye'. Isn't Turkiye ready for Europe? Or is Europe not ready for Turkey and will never be?

I agree with some of that. I don’t agree that Europe’s don’t like Muslims. The issue is the radicalization that comes with it. Also Turkey can’t handle Russia lol. That is false statement. Both counties have dictators on power and that is where the understanding comes from! Same with China and so on! Those are facts.

Reasons why Turkey shouldn't be allowed into the EU
1: illegal occupation of part of Cyprus
2: continued attempts at labeling any Kurd who seeks independence as a terrorist and then targeting them for assassinations
3: continued incursions into the Aegean Sea and refusal to recognize it as the Greek territorial waters that it is.
Until those 3 things change no EU country should even want to consider letting Turkey in

Good point . No country on planet earth should be told what to food to grow or eat . A country should feed its own people and trade surplus’s for its needs . How can a country claim to be Independent when it can’t feed its people ??? All countries in the world should , no , must work together to attain a sustainable living standard . Basic needs. Food Water Health Education Rule of Law should not be negotiable . Any person on planet earth has the right to grow food and not be controlled by Genetically modified crops. I believe Türkiye 🇹🇷 has done the right thing, staying out of European Union 🇪🇺And that’s how I see it Andrej Kondisenko Cairns Australia 🇦🇺

1: They started ethnic cleansin after coup Cyprus Goverment. Turkey protected Turks against Cyprus Ethnic cleans.
2: There is no request independence. Pkk terrorist killed Kurds people who do not want independence. PKK is a terrorist organization recognized by the European Union and the United States. If someone support them that means they are terrorist. They are coming from north iraq.
3: The Aegean Sea has never been a Greek territorial water, why should it be now, with a ridiculous map?.
