Nice little hack!!! I love it. I'm an avid excel user, but I still love the few little tricks that are enormously useful that I learned from this (* ~ and replace blanks!). The nerd in me is just so happy =)

+Doug H Hey Doug, I am working with some data and I am running into an issue where my first "bar" is 0.63 and shows up before I change the x-axis from automatic to "Date Axis". However, once i change it to the "Date Axis" the bar disappears. I cant change the order of the bars but i did test it and moved the 0.63 bar into the middle of the bar graph and it had no problem appearing. Wondering if one, you can interpret my issue, and if so, two, any suggestions on what is causing this and how to remedy it? Thanks!

Doug -- this is brilliant -- thank you! Thanks to you, my big Excel presentation that is due for work next week will be even more impressive than I thought it could have been. Do you have a demonstration video done on Mac? There are a few slight but crucial differences with the Mac version of Office (I'm currently using 2011) -- I was able to get it to work but it might help fellow Mac users out there who may have had the same issues I did -- the interface is similar most of the time but quite different at the "format axes" step -- and the resultant behavior on Mac was different too. I'd be more than happy to send you screenshots or do a Screenflow video and send it to you as an addendum to this one. (I'm certified with Apple and have been doing Mac training and technical writing for processes and workflows for about 5 years.) Resources for this exact process were slim -- and yours was certainly the easiest to follow and got perfect results!

Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I don't have Excel for Mac so I don't know too much about how this would work for it or put a video together. I hope your presentation goes well!

Hello, Lorenzo. I'm using the Mac version of Excel 2011 and ran into the same problem at the "format axes" step. Can you tell me how you resolved it? I'm a pretty basic level Excel user and a complete nube to Excel graphs. Thanks in advance!
Also, I echo your comments to Doug regarding this excellent video on a subject that I have not found covered elsewhere.

Doug!!! This is almost exactly what I was looking for...Thank you so much!
Can you suggest how I can add more series to the same chart, like in the column where you have months I have customer name, and I have 3 extra columns, total fours columns for each Quarter?

Hi buckyafitch, thanks for the comment, seems like a lot in one chart...maybe panel charts? ruclips.net/user/DougHExcelsearch?query=panel%20chart

Is it possible to do this in a VBA? What I mean is that the user puts in the values for the bars width and their length - resulting in a plot on the screen. Also, is it possible to do this in a horisontal bar chart?

I'm not good with VBA, but try posting this on the mrexcel.com forum...lots of gurus there.

In a histogram the area is proportionate to the value illustrated, in this example the area is proportionate to the square of the value illustrated. A monthly example is not great because months are essentially equal ... useful if you have uneven data categories like : 1000 from Jan to March, 500 from April to May so you'd want to illustrate that the data collection period is different e.g. : it would be Jan 333, Feb 333, Mar 333, Apr 250, May 250.
The illustration method is great however and I will copy it :)
