You could accuse Hyundai of either doing too much, or not doing enough with this new-generation 2021 Hyundai Tucson mid-size SUV.
In other markets this crucial new model is offered with electrified powertrains, but in Australia, the Tucson has a range of petrol and diesel engines. There's no hybrid in sight. And in a part of the market where the dominant SUV - the Toyota RAV4 - accounts for more than a quarter of sales on the back of huge hybrid powetrain demand, it could be a misstep from the brand.
There's been plenty done when it comes to the styling of the new 2021 Tucson, though. It is sharp, stylish and has more lines and creases than the average great grandma's face. And there are some interesting pricing considerations, too - some odd inclusions and weird exclusions, but also an intriguing new N Line sporty package that might be just right for some customers.
So, the question is, does the all-new Hyundai Tucson stack up as an alternative to our mid-size SUV pick-of-the-pack, the Toyota RAV4?

This review was really annoying with so much negativity. The things you complained about were so silly. I’ve owned an old Tucson for 13 years, Hyundai’s are great, reliable and offer good servicing and customer service. I’ve tested every car so far, in all price ranges including high end cars because I couldn’t decide what I wanted. I looked at all prices, all specs, I’m a basic driver around town and don’t require much. And this car was by far the best for what you get. These RUclips car reviews can be very unrealistic, especially when talking about engines. I mean, most of us don’t drag race, I also can’t have a hybrid because inner city folks don’t have garages or anywhere to plug them in. This is a great family car and it looks amazing inside
there is hybrid and plug in hybrid what are you talkin about?
This would be the most biased assessment i have ever heard. You push the Rav 4, Hyundai back their after sales support. Toyota are severely disappointing in their after sales support. Give me the backup of Hyundai.
I had a 2017 Kia Sportarge with a 2.0L engine and found it to ok 👌 for 98% of the time it did change down on the bigger hill climes to maintain the speed in Cruise control. I just replaced it with the new Hyundai Tucson Elite and love 💕 it it has everything I need in a suv it would be nice to have a little more power but not essential as you can only do 100 or 110 on freeways. And it definitely has sufficient power for overtaking.A hybrid would be great 👍 it if you didn’t have to sell your house 🏡 to get one.
Great review touching on the obscene cost of non hybrid models
thanks for a great vid!
In Europe we have both hybrid and plug in hybrid of tucson. I ordered my Tucson hybrid top trim level with all the extra package en safety features i januari and picked it up from the dealership 2 weeks ago and I just love driving the car. It's so quiet and with great handling, driving experience and good fuel economy. I also testdrove the RAV4 hybrid before I decided which one I would go for but Tucson felt better in every aspect, more premium fealing, better handling and better safety features and better warranties. The only tthing that RAV4 was better than Tucson was that it had slightly better fuel consumption but it didn't felt as refined as Tucson. The price of the top trim level hybrid AWD with all the extra features and package in Sweden I paid 400 000 SEK which is about 61 000 AUD and I think that is a good price for what you have to pay for a Volvo, BMW, Audi or Mercedes that would cost double the price with only 2 year warranty.
Designer: So how many body lines do you want?
Hyundai: Yes.
A trick: you can watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using it for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Alden Aldo Yup, I have been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself :D
I don’t know about Australia, but in the US a hybrid and plug in are available if you like. It’s a great re-do
Yeah, Australia doesn't get any hybridisation. Shame, really!
Also Europe has 3 types of hybrid for this car: Mild, HEV and PHEV
@@carsguide Blame ScoMo
I liked all sections of the review and I note theres more of this car to be reviewed by carsguide . Matt did a good job considering he only had the 2.0 to work with and 1 variant to work with as well. I agree the car is slightly under powered in the 2.0 as I tested it yesterday in the base model. Sad for the head lamps ! Expensive for what it is !
Good looking with no fire risk issue yet
Thanks for the great review. The turbo engine is small compared to the Mazda CX5. The Tucson appears under powered for its size.
Thanks for including the ownership section and drawing the comparison between a larger and heavier car without extra power!
You're welcome.
I suspect the only reason for the base model (Tucson Tucson ) with the 2 litre atmo engine is for fleet buyers.
It looks great! Bold move for Hyundai
I don’t really know if bringing out I hybrid will really boost sales considering that the outlander phev and the forester hybrid (e-boxer) definitely don’t sell as well as the rav4 do
Great review I went to my local dealer to look at the tuson elite . I like the look and appointments but I don't like the petrol options , I asked when we will get the diesel as I tow a 4.9 mt boat and guess what they don't know! I guess i will have to wait and see a more cooperative dealer, we bought a kona elite last Xmas and she loves it . Thank you for an honest review. Cheers Rick
The diesel variant should be available in the third quarter of this year
💯
Surprised that the review only really makes any comparison to the Rav 4. I have just bought a CX 5 after looking at it, the Tucsan and the Rav 4 and test driving all of them. The first option eliminated was the Rav 4. Lots of hard plastics, nowhere near as smooth a drive, tech not as good and noisier interior than the other 2 options. Deliberated long and hard between the CX5 and Tucson though, ultimately going with the Mazda. Quieter interior, smoother drive and zippier engine big factors. Plus heaps better pricing for the AWD Touring model compared to what you have to pay for the AWD Tucson.
American new Tucson is hybrid.. why didn’t Australian version get a hybrid option.. odd
This is the most honest review on the internet 👏🏽 No hybrid = no sale for me. It’s a stupid oversight by Hyundai. Oh, for gods sake put a HUD in the Tucson! It’s a pretty standard inclusion with most good cars these days and extremely helpful with Australia’s obsession on speed limits. Fantastic review!
Never use HUD waste of time with polarised sunnies
@@Tigers529 wow that’s odd, not sure why you would wear sunglasses at night. On another note the last car I had with a HUD I could see it perfectly with my polarised sunglasses. Perhaps it’s only some?
I was also looking forward to buy the hybrid. Since no hybrid I won’t be buying this
i think his review is a bit skewed. Knowing for a fact that in Korea they have 6 engine types and theres hybrid too. I think people who watch this review shouldnt just look from Australian market perspective but their overall global range and engine types for this model. Unfortunately hyundai has not decided to release even the hybrid in many countries yet, lets hope so., and who knows e version
New drinking game: Take a shot when he mentions halogen headlights...
To be clear, that wasn't my intention. Hope you had fun drunk-watching my review.
Matt
@@carsguide was great fun! You're one of the best reviewers out there as well :)
A great looking vehicle.
If I were a younger person I would definitely give the Hyundai a go. Fundamentally it beats the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid in every area - from towing to acceleration to mileage, to features, to appearance... and, of course, price. So if you're not risk adverse I'd definitely recommend you go for the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. But the standard ICE only vehicle is a bust.
There are only two reasons NOT to buy the Tucson Hybrid 2021. They are... Hyundai and Turbo. Personally I'm a huge fan of turbos on sports cars, and yes I appreciate these are not your granddaddy's turbos. However I've driven turbos for years now.. .actually decades... and the truth is that even modern turbos have a lifespan of less than 100K miles. Last one I had replaced cost me $6,500 including installation.
However the primary reason for not buying is the reputation of the manufacturer. Specifically Toyota over Hyundai. To be fair Toyota (and in particular the Rav4) are slipping down the reliability charts, while Hyundai is on the ascendancy. But is the Tucson Hybrid going to match or better the Rav4 Hybrid? It's a real question mark in my mind.
I expect the Tucson Hybrid will force Toyota to drop prices or do a rework on their Rav4. I especially like that the Hyundai has more rear leg room. That's a big, big plus for me.
So what do I drive right now? Well, it's a Rav4 Prime. But I have this nagging thought that I made an expensive mistake. The Rav4 Prime is dull to drive (apart from the acceleration) and suffer the same lack of rear leg room as its Hybrid sibling. Plus they have the worst thought-out combination of features. What in the name of God is the point of having a power driver's seat but no 2 or 3 person memory? This should be a standard feature for power seats. Always.
Will be interesting
Why does the Australian highlander version not get the shift by wire, still a stick shift!!
Looks fantastic and futuristic very modern far better than the rav 4 or CX-5 but is let down in the eng department the old 2.0 na eng yep I know it's a great eng great in Cerato /i30 but no so in a heavy SUV some other markets get the 2.5 and the hybrid but here in Aus we miss out .won't affect Toyota rav 4 sales in the slightest I'd go for the RAV4 2.0 eng punch's out 127kw compared to 110kw
I like it very much. In fact I jost bought one Plug-In Hybrid version with 265 hp. I am from Romania. Colour is a dark grey call it Dark Knight I think.
Wish we could buy that in Australia
So this or a rav 4 or tiguan?
now is already middle of July 2021 in Sydney, but i don't see new tucson 2021 on the street yet....seems like Australian market has better taste ?
And not enough money.
LED headlights should be standard like seatbelts are.
Hear, hear!
Matt
Am I tripping out or the indicators and reversing lights are being set really low in the rear bumper? Wouldn't they get hidden pretty much while in traffic?
Yes, it's a strange placement for the direction indicators. Following one car behind the Tucson and they wouldn't be visible.
@@SirGregory Kia Sportage did the same thing, I hate it.
@@SirGregory a lot of cars do that now it’s so it looks nicer and also the fact that in the us they can use the break lights as indicators
There is a Tucson hybrid and. Plug in , but not for the Australian market at the moment.
True...
Yes that sucks. I’d buy it in a heart beat if we had the USA version
@@Tigers529 i have just order the elitte plus the nLine, looks great, will be here in Jul/Aug
Yep, actually stopped watching this review when he said there's "no hybrid". Do your research.
That two litre is a slug of a motor as well
The reason Hyundai didn't introduce hybrid versions in Australia is because you don't have the same emission regulations that we have in EU (Europe). For example in Sweden the annual vehicle tax in AUD would be: gasoline engine the one you drove: 1700 AUD, hybrid: 700 AUD, Plug in hybrid: 55 AUD.
And also because they're building the electrified versions in Europe, not Korea, so the costs are super prohibitive. And if there's no 'requirement' for any form of hybridisation or electrification in Australia, then why ask customers to pay over the odds? We get Hyundai's position on the issue, but customers looking for a high-tech new SUV might not.
Thanks
Matt
@@carsguide Do you think too many Australian buyers look at high-tech rather than looking at total cost of ownership? I'd love to buy a fully electric vehicle, but they no not make sense in terms of TCO in Australia.
@@SirGregory look at EV sales in Aus, We just don’t buy enough of them & I think that is influencing the availability for some makers
@@stevejohnstone5163 There was reportedly a surge of interest when the RAV4 Hybrid went on sale here, but Toyota has the volume that other makers don't have in Australia. So on small volumes it probably doesn't make sense for the likes of Mazda, Ford, Kia and Hyundai to bring hybrids here. I wonder if the just-announced pure electric Hyundai Sonic and Kia EV6 would find a viable market in Australia without government incentives. I think they would need to outsell Tesla's offerings to make it worth the mods for local sales. They look interesting though.
Interested about how you think this compares to the Tiguan life with the luxury pack?
Hey Kevin, I'd probably be choosing Tiguan if it was my own money.
Cheers
Matt
You'd be spending more for the features but would loss a bit of performance given the current option being sold in Australia
For either I was thinking of upgrading to the next best motor. 1.6 turbo or 132tsi
Hi there! Where did you find the information about the N line pack having the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster as part of the pack? A Hyundai salesman advised differently. I’m hoping you’re right and the salesman wrong, maybe being early days and wasn’t sure.
Hey Paul,
The information pack from Hyundai states the inclusion of the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the Tucson and Elite grades - they don't otherwise have that cluster, just a standard analogue setup with a 4.2-inch display.
I'm sure we're right (straight from Hyundai's product planning documents!!) and the dealer isn't.
Thanks
Matt
Have you got a link or a copy? I can not seem to find it on the website. I asked for a info pack at the dealership but they said it’s all online.
I would love to see a review of the new 2021 Haval H6 now on sale in Australia, especially looking at the price being very competitive.

2:50 I have also noticed a few Hyundais with crooked badging, not sure whats going on in their factory but they fix their templates.
It seems the brand aligns the badges to the curvy line on the boot, rather than the straight line at the base of the boot. There would be reasons, but it still looks wonky!
@@carsguide just for curiosity sake. If you guys still have the car. Can you park behind the Tucson as if you're behind it in traffic and see how visible the indicators and reverse lights are?
Why does the interior keep changing. The one you say is the topspec and are sitting in has a gear changer, but the top spec interior view of other pictures does not have the gear changer?
Hey Brad, good pickup!
The b-roll footage was filmed with the 1.6 T-GDi AWD version of the Tucson, which has the "by wire" shifter that has buttons for P R N D rather than a regular "t-bar" auto shifter.
We don't know why Hyundai was able to give the film crew a 1.6 T-GDi AWD to drive, but not the media. We assume there's some kind of issue with it that meant it wasn't ready to be driven by media.
Thanks
Matt
@@carsguide of course. Makes perfect sense
You failed to mention that hybrid models are coming. They are available overseas as well as a 2.5 litre model
They AREN'T coming to Australia.

@@angelabroderick5375 great to see you choose the hybird
The tone of your review is opinionated and partial from the very beginning. Hyundai makes good cars and they are getting better, with much better quality and being more liable than most other brands. Don’t be biased. This review’s not very good….
I don't believe the total cost of ownership of electric or hybrid stacks up over five years or longer without government incentives. PHEV perhaps? In any case, I've given up waiting and decided to upgrade later this year to a diesel. Never thought I'd say that, but there you have it. Can't wait forever for our government. On my shortlist are Hyundai Santa Fe and Palisade. I like the Tucson, but need three rows. I've taken the Palisade for a drive along the length of Sydney’s M7 and back again in both light and stop-start traffic and found its active cruise control and lane centering excellent. I'm in two minds about waiting for the next Kluger model to be announced before making the jump. Maybe Hyundai will make up my mind with a good deal before then.
I’m in the same position. I’m tired of waiting for our backwards government to offer incentives for electric cars.
@@gurya I'm glad it's not just me.
Please spend more time describing the adaptive cruise control and lane centering tech vs other cars.
Hey Henry,
Sure - thanks for the note. The lane centring is less aggressive than in some other SUVs, with a fairly natural feel to the way it adjusts your line. It isn't as insistent as you might expect, so you still have to keep your hands on the wheel to ensure it's going to do what you think it should.
The adaptive cruise control was good - it maintained a good (not too long) distance at freeway speed, and came to a halt then restarted. You need to tap the throttle or the button to recommence if you're sitting for more than a few seconds, and we're sure it'll be even better in the diesel AWD which just has a bit more oomph to it.
Thanks
Matt
@@carsguide thank you, just saw your response four months later!
Electric cars are not as environmentally friendly as one would make it up to be, and that’s just on the car’s emissions when you take into account the electricity it consumes. This is also excluding how electric cars are less recyclable than your conventional cars.
America has hybrid tuscon & plug in coming soon.
The exterior is always subjective but the interior certainly surpasses but doubtful reliability.
So, they've gone with the KIA 2.0 engine without direct injection? Great advance.
The Kia engine is a Hyundai design,Hyundai are the parent company of Kia

A car from the future with no hybrid ? Righto !!
2 litre was gutless, noisy, slow to respond, rough ride, the interior wasn't as comfy as the Rav 4. Rav 4 offer more and seems more lux. Rav 4 downside, not a full size spare and exy to buy full size. The Outlander has 10 year warranty, the full size spare under the vehicle and extra seat in the rear. That's a great idea
