Hello. I have been a professional DJ for more than 30 years, at first panic seizes you but over the years you need the public to motivate you and get to the maximum level of concentration, manage to control the situation (I imagine the same thing will happen to you). Now I am "returning" to pool billiards and it is difficult for me to control my concentration although I often succeed, I have always compared the situation "Dj vs. Billiards" and I was very surprised to see that you have done it too, it is incredible. Thank you very much for your advice. Greetings from Barcelona (Spain).
Thanks Sam!!! Glad it has helped you out 😃 Did you know I have developed the first ever mental training course for Competitive Pool Players?? Hi Niels. You helped me a lot. I had my local leauge finals yesterday(my level 4). I feel anxiuos from the morning and implement all your tools to deal with pressure in different occasions. It work really well and I even managed to win. Thanks!
Great stuff as always, thank you for all that you do! I'd like to add one thing to this I think of a movie that really inspired emotion in me like the scene where the hero comes through the last second and wins. I envision this in my head and that emotion flows through me and overrides my nervousness.
Jayson Shaw did a Great interview about the Pressure's of the Game , What he's going threw at the Moment Mentally ( He even broke down and cried on the interview about his Family ) . It was So Powerful !! Reach out to him and check on him I'm a Big Fan of his ... Thanks again
Thank so much for the tips for dealing with pressure. And congratulations on your run in the US Open! Taking that second loss against Ko Ping Chung is no small feat - the fact that he made it all the way out to the semifinals proves he was on his game this tournament! Keep going hard in the paint, Niels! We're all behind you!
Thank you so much for everything and all these videos. I meditated to ur meditation video and after that i went to my local pool club and won the tournament there. I couldn’t do it without ur tips and i just wanted to say thank you. Im an junior and still learning and i find every video of urs very helpful. Keep it up 💪🏼😄
I’ve been trying to take my game to the next level by calming my nervousness whenever I play someone. I play really well when I’m alone, but whenever I am playing another person I start to shake and make errors that I don’t normally make. I really appreciate these tips and will implement in my next training session. Thank you Niels Feijen.
I talk about this with my first-year engineering students. Growth is, by definition, uncomfortable. I like "fear is excitement without the breath." I'm stealing that.
Hey niels.... Once again great video you never disappoint. I havent been able to go on the table as much as I use because of new responsibility at work but mentally I am always playing plus I have a yt channel where I post content and still have to keep in some sort of shape to produce these small tutorials... With that said this is going to be a great tool to use this coming weekend as I enter my first tournament in 4 months being a bit rusty blush let's see it works it magic.... I complete understand the tools you explained... Thanks very much
Really been helpful. Playing in the 8 ball singles in Ohio's State tournament for the first time tomorrow and I've been nervous for a day or two now so I only imagine what tomorrow will be like
Hi Niels. Just want to say this video helped me A LOT. Been having trouble with handling pressure recently and couldn't figure out how to fix it. I followed your advice and I just won a small tournament here in the Philippines last night. So thanks very much!
Sage advice! I’ve been telling my kids to have this same attitude in their basketball and baseball showcases. It applies to everything in life (job interviews too!) Bring it on! It’s yours for the taking!
Thanks Junus!!! Please feel free to check out my Terminator College website and have a look at my mental training courses, they are the first ever courses for pool players!!!!!! 😉💪💪
Ever since I have developed a good amount of skill, I have been an excellent pressure player. One problem with this is, now I depend on pressure to play good lol! It's like a drug! My take on it is, the pressure is your friend unless, you let pressure be friends with fear. They will always be side by side, but you can't let fear run the show. You brilliantly handled this by telling your self those 3 things you mentioned in this video! Great simplified advice!
Good advice, I would add when I feel the fight or flight desire I try to say as you mention the bring it on I'm ready to fight confident that I'm the better player and I can win reinforced by every mistake my opponent makes and every great shot I make. Deep breaths help too.

Hi Niels, you are a great player and fun to watch! Glad to see you have a youtube channel, I'm sure I can learn some from your videos. Quick question, does doing drills help with playing under pressure? I shoot really well until it is tournament time and looking for ways to up my game. Seems like when I'm under pressure I collapse.
Hi there! Good question. Doing drills will give you muscle memory which is very important under pressure. But did you ever hear about my Terminator College?? I still remember the first tournament I joined. Just before the pre game warm-up, I was so nervous I had to run to the toilet to throw up 🤣... I totally calmed down when I pocketed my first ball and got a good position for the second ball, I knew it then that I can do this... eventually winning the tournament 😀
I get more nervous around instructors and practicing around others than playing for some reason. Maybe, it's because I don't have money on the line in my league games or my A.D.D. allows hyper-focus to block it out. No idea. Now getting mad, yep! I have to calm down and remember it's just a game from time to time when I do something stupid. Blood pressure goes up, astigmatism gets worse, shooting gets worse, and it's bad.
i know that this is a different subject but is possible that your center vision changes once in a while. i check my vision center atleast once a month and it has always been to the right side of my nose bridge and i checked it last week and it was the center of my nose and chin. I am hitting the mighty x every time now . what are your thoughts?
Usually people start out with their cue under their chin and in time holding it under their dominant eye. If you hit the Mighty X now every time i dont think you have to worry.
Another technic, when you are (too) nervous: Think, you are bored. („do I really have to do it ANOTHER time? Okeee) In most of cases, a certain relaxation will come.
A month ago my APA 🎱 team made it to tri-annual playoffs and THE NIGHT BEFORE I got bumped from a SL5 to SL 6. Then I got matched with a SL7. I was so nervous during one game that this happened; I drew back on a ball for perfect position on a side pocket shot. So I take a look at two other balls to figure out where I want the cue ball to be after I make the side pocket shot. Then I FORGOT about the side pocket shot and went for one of those balls! The ball I was supposed to hit next wasn’t even a foot from the cue ball and it completely disappeared for me until I missed and got back to my seat and realized it was still sitting there. 😧🤦🏻♂️
interestingly the paradoxical intentions work. In a boxing match when I was young I remember getting rocked by a great shot. And instead of freaking out over his power. I would say to myself… “ great shot, Is that all you got! You hit like a girl… i always recovered and was never knocked out.
One time our team was in playoffs, I had just got a carbon shaft (during the tournament, it was immediately helpful). So I'm sitting out on the chair, get my turn to shoot. I grab my stick start shooting. Hit in 4 balls that flowed in a nice pattern; with my Break Cue! My team was over there laughing at me. Didn't notice them, the horrible clicking sound when I shot. Ugh. Beer helps me. Need less now that I've played more. Gotta left shots go

I guess I am lucky in a way the more pressure I feel... the better I play.... The down side is when I feel no pressure my average game is sub par.
may i ask out of all your opponents through the years, who's that one player who gave you the most pressure?
Who won the Giotto pool case?
If you’re not nervous, you’re not ready!
It's a fine balance, but yes we need the nerves for sure!! 🎉🎉
