I remember finding this manga in the library like 25 years ago, and it hooked me with the amazing art and the fact that the stories were told without words. The lack of a HUD or conventional ways to check your status is a really cool way to honor the source material's way of story telling.
WHOAH! I need to read uhhh look it immediately 🤣 yes definitely an honorable way to pay homage to the original it’s genius if u ask me retro games where way more creative n crazy in a phenomenal way
As someone who owns some of the manga this is inspired by, this is hilarious. Gon not taking damage is directly from the manga, as he's basically invincible. The idea that he could get peeved enough to destroy the whole world is so in character it's genius. Also I think the reason the graphics look like that is because the developers are trying to mimic the hyper realistic art of the original manga which is neat.
To add some important context, Gon the Dinosaur is infamously indestructable. In the manga, he'll encounter beasts like bears and lions and headbutt/bite them into oblivion. He even defeated a giant underground tarantula. Because of his invincibility and his never ending hunger, he reminds me of Kid Goku, but in dinosaur form.
Ever since hearing Roger Ebert insist that video games can't be art, I've been semi-obsessed with considering ways in which they could are. I feel like the use of music in place of a traditional UI may have been a meaningful exploration of video games as a medium, and therefore contributed to the art form that is the video game. It's a shame this had to sit forgotten for 17 years.
It might be easier to answer separate archaic art concepts and contemporary notions. In the latter case I believe that whatever suits the art market will be viewed as art for their own benefits. Art is an industry like any other, there is no interest in recognizing an already influential industry such as video games, I would say even hollywood movies would slip out of this definition. But in the other hand it is obvioudly subjective, any piece of trash could be validated by an institution and be recognized as art. So, about the discussion "what art is or isn't" is really a construct that means nothing, if a piece of media speaks to you in some way, it obviously has a valuable expressive quality, so it fulfilled it's cycle by successfully communicating something. And if that is art, well, any meaningful experience has the same status.
I sure hope your oxygen tank was full because you went super DEEP with that one. Art isnt this mystical sacred exploration of blah blah blah making everyone who even attempts it into legendary super beings who had SOME mayor insight into the universe and the workings of the human mind. It really is just a game and they tought itd be cool.
Just rewatched the entire Forgotten Games series last week and I can confirm it's one of my favorites. I don't play the games, I just love to hear about games that were never officially localized, they usually have some good stories behind. Keep up the good work 👍🏼👍🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Man, I knew about Gon's origins from a Manga, bit I never knew that he ALSO had his own video game! And him running around the world now adds a lot more comical sense to his Tekken III Ending Movie :D
A game without interface is a really genius approach for Gon when you think about it. If you ever "read" the mangas, you'll notice that they are completely devoid of any text aside from sound effects. Gon will meet some kind of animal. He'll try to mimic their behavior, and then slapstick will happen. No explanations needed. They are the simplest of stories.
I'm kind of surprised a publisher didn't snag the right for the game, re-named it something like "Tiny Rex's Big Adventure!" and released it in the West simply because it would've taken next to no effort.
Lotta Japanese devs are mad racist against Americans. Especially the old school ones. Some that come to mind are the creators of the Dragon Quest series, they purposefully leave out content from American versions purely because they straight up don't like Americans.

Wow, never knew about this game. Big fan of the original manga by Masashi Tanaka. His artwork is absolutely gorgeous and his stories are hilarious. Gon losing his temper and fucking shit up is completely in character.
As a huge Tekken fan, I had to buy the cartridge of this strange game. The controls and hit detection are a little stiff but the graphics are beautiful and the sound design is really unique. It definitely has its own cute little charm.
The minimalist look it goes for by not having anything on screen is definitely interesting especially by using the music as an indication of health. Although I now wonder if he was that powerful when attacked too often how wasn't he able to do this in Tekken 3 and just end the tournament? Very disappointed that it wasn't an option in that now.
I had the artbooks when I was younger. I remember them being mildly popular. Personally I always wondered where Gon's power level was compared to Dragon Ball characters. Aim a scouter at him.
Well he's definitely a planet buster, and he seems to be able to survive in space? He seems infinitely durable, especially after seeing Gon can change his size to a planet to destroy a planet at an instant. Can he just change his size to anything? How durable is Gon? So many questions.
The way this is presented with minimal UI and text is actually pretty amazing. one of the reasons GON was so appealing as a manga, is that is was told with no words whatsoever. This was a deliberate choice to make sure it's appeal was universal. I think that this game went about creating that feel quite well based on everything presented. If you think about it, it honestly could have been localized as is in this state.
I remember playing with Gon figurines/actionfigures when I was a kid and when I first got the SNES game I had never heard about that it had a game... Feeling very nostalgic seeing it on the channel! :)

Like picking the Nali War Cow in Unreal Tournament, he sure makes people seethe lol. This game looks pretty cool, actually. Will definitely play it "any way I can".
This looks really cool for a SNES game. I remember browsing the manga graphic novels at the old comic book store back in the day and it looked amazing. Especially the two page wide image of Gone being attacked by something huge. I could never forget that.
