Ive noticed that over the years..Jamaica hardly ever gets the full brunt of hurricanes. Some people say its prayer but i think that it also has a lot to do with Jamaicas geographical location. Its still blessed because God placed Jamaica where it is. Psalms 83;18

Hurricane Gilbert (1988) and hurricane Charlie (1951) were like two identical hurricanes that followed the same track right across the entire length of Jamaica. Gilbert was a little more powerful, but although Jamaica infrastructure was strengthened since then (1988), it was still far better than in 1951. As a consequence the death toll, damage and misery was a lot greater for Charlie than for Gilbert. Charlie was the hurricane that was talked about for decades. I was born in 1952 so did not directly experience it (all my siblings did), but while I was growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, any mention of a hurricane in Jamaica always referenced Charlie. Today I love a good storm. I love to sit and watch the heavy rain coming down at an angle. I love to watch the lightning and cheer when I see a good one. I love to hear a loud and long drawn out thunder. Ok, so I'm weird, but I love it. Good info. Excellent delivery. Thanks, keep it up.
I wouldn't call you weird, Ricardo Chong...I too adore watching rain bucket down, and I particularly love to listen to heavy rains on zinc roof, when I'm in Jamaica. Storms, hurricanes, lightening and thunder, however, will have me cowering inside a closet!

@@HummingbirdJa later as an adult I knew it was the madness of a child but a child would see things that way. looking back we are very lucky. we had recently moved to that housing scheme and thank God for whoever built it they made it hurricane-proof and build some real deep and wide drainage systems. we were near the sea and also had sea walls in place. after the hurricane, we last power yes but not water again the person who built at the place the water reservoir in the mountains so we had gravity feed
🇯🇲 Thanks Irina....job well done. Having grownup in a well constructed house, thanks to my father's friend, a building contractor, I observed & learnt of good & honest workmanship. The investment in building a well constructed home is also an investment in securing one's life in times of hurricanes, floods, earthquakes or fires. Over 200,000 people lost their lives mostly due to poor housing construction in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Alot of the structures never had enough concrete or steel for reinforcement and so their dwellings became their tombs. Irene, please do a post on earthquakes & hurricanes effects on Caribbean structures, lives & how they affect the mentality of the building trade.

EXCELLENT work Irina- I remember Gilbert- it was my first and one I will never forget and yes island man talks about God's blessings on Jamaica. We have learned since Gilbert as my generation certainly did changes to everything since then. Gilbert was the first hurricane in years, so much so I wanted to experience it as we kept hearing about it and never experienced it. I can tell you after Gilbert, no way do I need another hurricane. Your work was detailed and spot-on scientifically. Well done and may our beloved island remains fruitful and deter every hurricane that comes our way.

Much love, I do believe that it was an financial issue why lots of most rural houses where built from wood. Jamaica has had high building code from way back before 80’s and Gilbert. Due to being in an earth quake zone they had been building with cement, blocks and steel.Even higher standards than what I’ve seen even in Florida’s houses . As people financial situations improved then the buildings got better for many.
Yep. The house I lived in back in Jamaica was rock solid -just board up di window dem when storm a come an you good :) When I moved to the States it was a surprise how everything is wood frame thrown up in what seemed like "a few days".

I am so glad you are part of Jamaica, your research and videos are priceless when it comes to learning about our island. Gilbert was one of the worst periods of my life. Light and Water were a problem, getting ice was like finding gold. We had no power for months, and the water was so dirty we could not drink it from the pipe. I have experienced all other storms since then, but none as terrible as Gilbert. With all said, we are blessed.

I have never really studied the path of a hurricane but seeing a lot of Jamaicans think of Cuba being a big brother always helping I always thought our geographical location to Cuba always protect us from the hurricanes

This was actually a well-made presentation of hurricanes and how they work. I would add to your comments about JA being blessed that location is everything in the context of hurricane track. The Bahamas and Florida are two of the most frequently hit areas in this part of the world simply because they lie in the part of the Atlantic where the global steering patterns tend to set up shop during the busiest part of the season, that is August and September. Jamaica, otoh, tends to get hit most frequently in October, when steering patterns tend to shift south and / or allow for more unusual South to North tracks. Even that depends on what those global patterns are like from year to year, and there are actually decadal patterns that can influence the frequency and track of tropical cyclones. So I am pretty impressed about how well you were able to condense into 30 minutes a topic that can take a considerably longer period of time to explain.

The original script I wrote was for a 2 hour video 😂, and yes, it was quite a challenge to fit it into 30 mins, so had to cut out quite a bit. As for Jamaica being hit, I see that a direct hurricane comes around Jamaica every 40 years or so. So we should be expecting one before 2030. That was one of the parts I cut out from the video, but I will mention in the "hurricane preparation" video closer to the beginning of the season. Glad you enjoyed this episode! Stay tuned. Didn't care for it at first, but learned to love it and went back 6 months later and have over 35 trips in. 3 weeks last November. I have never really studied the path of a hurricane but seeing a lot of Jamaicans think of Cuba being a big brother always helping I always thought our geographical location to Cuba always protect us from the hurricanes

This was actually a well-made presentation of hurricanes and how they work.
I would add to your comments about JA being blessed that location is everything in the context of hurricane track. The Bahamas and Florida are two of the most frequently hit areas in this part of the world simply because they lie in the part of the Atlantic where the global steering patterns tend to set up shop during the busiest part of the season, that is August and September. Jamaica, otoh, tends to get hit most frequently in October, when steering patterns tend to shift south and / or allow for more unusual South to North tracks. Even that depends on what those global patterns are like from year to year, and there are actually decadal patterns that can influence the frequency and track of tropical cyclones.
So I am pretty impressed about how well you were able to condense into 30 minutes a topic that can take a considerably longer period of time to explain.

The original script I wrote was for a 2 hour video 😂, and yes, it was quite a challenge to fit it into 30 mins, so had to cut out quite a bit. As for Jamaica being hit, I see that a direct hurricane comes around Jamaica every 40 years or so. So we should be expecting one before 2030. That was one of the parts I cut out from the video, but I will mention in the "hurricane preparation" video closer to the beginning of the season.

Didn't care for it at first, but learned to love it and went back 6 months later and have over 35 trips in. 3 weeks last November. Anyway listen/watch the video of this song Wild Gilbert by Lloyd Lovindeer. It was popular at the time and told the whole story. Jerry & LuLu

I was thinking if I should go into details by explaining Bermuda High and Azores High and their influence, but then just decided to mention them under "subtropical ridge" and pointing at Azores High as an example.

This is such a great video. As someone who knows a lot about weather it is great to see it explained so well. Also the look on your face when you're asking flat earthers to explain how cyclones exist is how I look at them too when they go on and on. Haha

Thank you! Most of the material I use in the video is created by me, e.g. the script (story) in the video is written by me, so there is no copyright issue with that. I also used 3d model for some of the animation, which I bought from www.mozaweb.com/ In this video I also use footage from other youtubers - you can do that under fair use as long as you modify it and if it doesn't represent a major part of your video. I use editing software Adobe Premiere Pro.
