  • [Course 1 Lesson B]
Japanese counting is ACTUALLY easier than English counting since Japanese doesn't have as many unique numbers. With just 10 new words (the first 10 numbers) you can make up to 99 numbers.
Be sure to visit the website to see the full lesson.
    Here is the complete list:
    1 - ichi
    2 - ni
    3 - san
    4 - shi (yon)
    5 - go
    6 - roku
    7 - shichi (nana)
    8 - hachi
    9 - ku (kyuu)
    10 - juu
This video is part of the courses on:
fromzero.com based on the Japanese From Zero! (learnfz.com/JF...) book series written by George Trombley and Yukari Takenaka

So, I found a nice game/technique for practicing numbers. If you have a commute to work. I've been just looking at plates, signs, and billboards and saying out loud all the numbers I see in Japanese. It's been really fun and I've started to just not even think about it, but immediately know the numbers in Japanese. Plus it's great because the numbers are always random and different.

Houses usually avoid using the number four because in Chinese and many other languages, four sounds like any word - death. So instead, they use 3A for their four. Example: 1, 2, 3, 3A, 5, 6......

Good stuff you got here though I really gotta say that because I feel like I've never made any progress with Japanese maybe because whatever videos I watched were generally japanese people teaching it. I have nothing against japanese people obviously but the videos I watched were usually pretty lackluster and I didn't feel I could connect with the material the same way.

I started a week ago today, let me tell you George, you and your wife have created something truly special. Although I am getting to a point in the series and book to which i get confused, so I seem to go back to the beginning, rewatching the videos, re-reading the lessons and reinforcing what I do know and understanding what I didn't which then allows me to progress a bit further. Like I say, I have only been doing this for a week, I know 1 - 99, some simple sentences and questions, along side 25 Hiragana. I work alot at the moment due to covid, but all of the spare time I have, i'm throwing at this. Never thought i'd be able to learn anything like this, but I love everything about the culture, and you good sir have made it so much more accessible for people like me.

    • @Gruzbee
      @Gruzbee 7 лет назад +21

I wouldn't be nervous about it. Just like learning to play notes on an instrument, you can't go from beginner to master without making some wrong squelching sounds. And while I don't subscribe to the whole "weeaboo" thing, I will add that (speaking for myself as an anime fan) were one ONLY learning Japanese for the sake of watching anime or reading manga... then it would be a rather hollow pursuit, and limiting the language of a people and culture to little more than a specific medium.

I've never heard of it being used for Asian culture all around, just specifically Japanese. Also, you shouldn't sound too much "like a dumb weeaboo" if you focus on the sound. You have a Japanese friend to practice with so just tell him/her to be hard on you about it. My Japanese teacher says I sound alright, but my Japanese friend says I sound cringey af, so I don't practice with him :( FeelsBadMan #CantPractice

Hi! So I asked my husband to count to 10 and back. He ended up counting differently but he made a really great point as to why it’s different. He said it could be different because typically when counting down it’s for something like during a celebration so when counting down they don’t use any numbers with negative associations (4 and 7 are changed).

    • @japanesefromzero

I'm a very disorganized learner, but your videos are so clear and concise that my Japanese has improved unbelievably fast since I started following you. I learned hiragana, katakana, some Kanji, verb conjugation, grammar, particle use, and simple sentences/vocab just from watching you. You are a real inspiration and have pushed me and raised my confidence to the point that I'm excited each and every day to learn more. Thanks a million George, I look forward to spending some of my savings on your books!

THANK YOU! This is why I had to write the books. All the books I bought to teach my students Japanese were so uncaring about the student. Authors are constantly punching the student in the stomach (that is how it feels). They knock the wind out of the student then expect them to keep learning. More videos coming!

I know this video is super old now, but I wanted to let you know. My husband and I moved to Japan last year and picked up the first of your books a few months before relocating. We've been using them (and a few other apps and sources) to learn, and I really like the way you explain things. I just found your videos and thought it was super helpful to review what we learned from your books since I took a bit of break from them. (Relocation to another country is very complicated lol). Anyway, I'm back on track and wanted to thank you! So... thank you! Haha! I think what I struggle with most is that I know more Japanese than my husband does, but he has more confidence to use what he knows when we go out in public. Still working on that confidence almost one year into living in Japan, but I know I'll get there with your resources!!!

1 to 5 is really easy for me because I used to read a dystopian novel called Pure (it's the first part of a triology) by Julianna Baggott. In it the female protagonist doesn't remember anything from her childhood except running through the street pointing at poles and saying: itchy knee, sun she go! She later realises that it's 1 to 5 in Japanese and that's a bit of an important part to the story's suspense background thing lol

You don't need to say all the numbers at the same time and for an hour.. Instead of memorise you should try to put it in your brain naturally one by one..
However, if you repeat いち, に, さん, よん, ご spending just 10 minutes in your day you'll be able to remember them.. So start now to repeat it 3,4,5,6 times.. and then you wait for 5 seconds to repeat again, but this time you must to remember them and then you say one by one.. If you're right, you rise the interval and then you wait for 10 seconds.. do the same thing.. later 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes..

Even though I've already bought two other books on japanese AND Kanji from zero - because of this video alone I also bought Japanese from Zero.
I love that you give video lessons to acompany your books and that they are actually free and not behind any registration wall.
(also I love that there's a Unity development book on the shelf behind you :D)

And I remembered that for years, and now here I am learning Japanese and I already know how to count to ten, so I can just go from there. It also helps that I’ve been learning for a year now.

Acorrding to a blog post a read way back in the day when i was dabling with japanese, this leads to americans sounding like a frog when they say the word "Kedo" because it sounds like "Kero"; the sound a frog makes

George, Route 66 was a very popular TV series from1960 thru 1964. It can still be found on You Tube. Route 66 followed two young men traversing the United States in a Chevrolet Corvette convertible, and the events and consequences surrounding their journeys. Also a very classic song covered by dozens of artist including the Rolling Stones "get your kicks on route 66". Great lessons by the way.
