    Add the new Michael Harding watercolours to the difficult-to-dry category as I am pretty sure they’re honey based too. I have just poured my paint palette for travelling in May. It needs to last me a whole month. Great idea wrapping pans!

    Great tips about looking for palettes that can squeeze more in the middle and pushing the pans right to the end! I always learn something watching your videos 😊 I’ve found the new formula of Windsor and newton cotmans break apart quite a lot after being rewetted

    You show M. Graham as a question mark. I live in a very humid area, but by leaving M.Graham paint to dry in a non-humid location for two weeks, it does dry reasonably well so it won’t move in the palette while transporting it. But I usually use Daniel Smith, Qor or Schmincke in the field because they dry hard and rewet easily. A lower cost US alternative that dries well is DaVinci bought in 27ml tubes.

    So far I have had good luck with Mung Yo and Turner watercolors. The Mung Yo came with already filled half-pans, but after hours of painting most of the cakes are pretty wet. I’ll let them set for about an hour before closing the lid and putting the case back in my pouch. So far, no spills, runs or smears. My Turner colors came in tubes. I’ve put the quantity I want in each pan and let them dry for at least a day, usually two or three days. So far, no issues. Along with several of your other followers, I really appreciate the tips, advice, and suggestions you pass out in your videos. This is one reason I signed up with your channel sometime ago. You have taught me a lot and I sincerely thank you for all you have done. May you and yours stay safe and healthy for a long, long time. Stay safe on your trip to New Zealand. I am looking forward to your videos covering your trip. - OkieSketcher1949

    Lukas are good for travelling palettes, also Kremer and Daler Rowney artist grade, but the prepoured pans or half pans. Proqbly a little silica bag in your palette or tin will help a lot.

    M Graham Gouache takes forever to dry. I’ve had awful experiences with it during travelling because the color will spill into other wells if the palette tips on its side in my bag. Anthraquinone blue in particular was a nuisance, even a year after I poured it, it remained gooey/tacky. I love it in the studio but a big NOPE in my travel palette 😅

    Great video
    well done
    I prefer to use plastic folding pallets as the paint sets much faster about a few days
    Jackson sets quite fast on the flat plastic pallets
    The plastic pallets has at least 16 wells
    I line the pallet with baking wax paper to keep it clean

    Teoh, I've never appreciated your advise about mold and dry times as being from the UK, it is relatively dry. I took my normally solid paints to Singapore and Indonesia recently and found my Jackson's/sennelier spilt everywhere from one session. I will be better prepared on my next visit!

    I would give one caveat on using a heat source to help dry your pans - it's a bad idea with some plastic palettes. I had a 3d printed palette that I adored... until the day I decided to leave it on the dash of my car to help the freshly poured paint dry. I was in the store for maybe ten minutes, but that was enough that when I got back to the car my poor palette had warped. Not by much, but just enough that the hinge had separated and it would no longer close.
    On the other hand, it did mean I "needed" to buy another palette from my favorite Etsy shop...

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Год назад +2

      That may have to do with the quality of the plastic.

    I think some of those paints take longer to dry because they contain honey in order to rewet easily. I know that's the case for Holbein and Sennalier.
    I've squirted Holbein into pans and they are great.

    I always love a palette video! M Graham is famous for not drying in some climates, but others report it's fine for them. I live near Seattle and here it's quite humid. It's also worth noting that Cobalt Teal/Turquoise in ANY brand is always binder-heavy and can take SIGNIFICANTLY longer to dry, and it can often run when you think it's ok. I agree with another commenter that Qor and DaVinci are great for drying and rewetting - better than Daniel Smith in my opinion!
    I've used a seedling mat for heat, and using a fan helps a lot as well.

    Hi Teoh! Thanks for the great video. I love my portable painter. I just heard they have expansion trays to add to it in different sizes to use the “brush well” area. Some are long and thin. Some are a half of the half pan. I really enjoy your videos. I especially like to watch when you mix the paints right on the painting. So cool!

    Jackson's and Sennelier premade pans/half-pans are not soft at all, and perfectly fine for taking with you; tubes-into-pans might be problem, yes, especially in warmer / more humid climates as Sennelier is honey/glycerine-based.

    Great video Teoh!
    Finally finished some of my prefilled half pans and am now waiting impatiently for my newly filled pans to dry.
    Could you do a "Painters grab bag" sort of video? what you would put together if you wanted to have a small kit all together ready to grab at a moments notice for a walk? what paints/palette, pencil, pen, sketchbook, miscellaneous supplies?
    Mine is currently a generic tin (3 well) with: Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Paynes Grey and Dioxazine Violet. Some cheap travel brushes, a collapsible water pot(Faber-Castell) a short HB pencil sharpened on both ends and a piece of kneadable eraser, that bundle is held together in a wrist sweatband I wear while painting and use to wipe my brush. and an Arteza A5 Watercolour book.

    M Graham watercolors will definitely not dry in the pan quickly. I made the mistake of adding MG Burnt Sienna into a half pan, waited overnight, and then opened my set to find that it spilled everywhere :(
    Thanks for the wax paper idea, never thought of doing that-are you unable to take watercolor tubes on a plane?
    I'm a big fan of Daniel Smith, dries quickly (just don't use their Primatek colors in pans, they sometimes will not rewet!).Thanks for the tips, Teoh!

    • @teohyc

      Watercolour tubes should be alright on planes. Certain DS colours will not rewet well. E.g. Viridian, Primatek mineral colours.

    I rarely take my watercolors outside, but can say definitively that M. Graham paints melt all over the place. It was a hot day, not particularly humid, and I only had one M. Graham pan in my palette…it was the only one that ran. What a mess! Also, I have experienced mold before, even though, again, I was in a pretty low-humidity environment. This occurred when I closed up still-wet paint in a little air-tight plastic jar with a plastic lid. I think it was Winsor-Newton. BTW, I find Winsor-Newton paints take forever to rewet. Does anyone else find that to be the case?

    Thank you for another very helpful video, Teoh! I wonder if you know the answer to a question for which I cannot find resolution. I created a custom pain box for traveling some time ago. Lately, I noticed that my Alizarin Crimson by WN is flaking. So, when I put a wash on my paper and add the paint it comes out in little flakes instead of completely dissolving. Do you know what maybe causing it? Did I get a bad batch of the color? Thank you!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Год назад +1

      If the flaking only happen to that colour, it could be a bad batch. Or if it happens only on the paper, it could be paper fault. Alizarin Crimson isn’t a problematic pigment except it’s not lightfast like the permanent version that’s all
