I think there are people which have learned the art of teaching and others just talk about what they do, and you are of the ones which teach and teach well... I was just mesmerized by the way you teach and show your art. Thank You for what you do, and doing it well
I just found this video almost 3 years after it was made, and it's a game changer for me. I purchased a sleeve board and after it arrived I attempted this sewing technique on a woven garment's sleeves. This very first attempt was successful: no puckers, no sewn in gathers. It has always been a challenge and a gamble to set in sleeves using the gathering technique, and not always a winner. Thank you, Kay Whitt!
This technique is sheer genius!!!! I've been sewing for many many years and this is probably one of the most effective methods I have ever seen. I've just made a fairly simple shift and inserted my sleeves along with the video. Result? Perfect set in sleeves with absolutely no lumps or bumps, thank you so much
I have been trying to figure out how to sew sleeves without and E stitch, and this is the best video that I have found! You are a great teacher and explain so simply and beautifully. Thank you! What a great method!
Wow, I have been trying to teach my daughter how to set in sleeves. I saw this as she was pinning the sleeves in and we used your method after removing some of the pins. I tried the method first as she watched. I had one small oops. She put the other sleeve in and it was great. Thanks so much. This is a time saver and they look great.
am so glad you explain the bodice should always be on top because I couldnt realize why I get pluckers and amazing how you set sleeve without gathers would love to learn this tip
I have watched tons of videos on sewing but you are the absolute best! Your instructions are clear and I always get great results. You're the best there is!
I was taught to stay stitch the sleeve cap from notch to notch and reduce the amount of of ease by pulling the thread from the center (between notches). Then, sew the side seams together and then, sew the sleeves to the armhole. It is more accurate and both sleeves will have the equal amount of ease distributed.
I have to say this is one of the best videos I have seen on how to sew a set in sleeve, I am new to sewing clothing and have been putting off trying to do the sleeves......many thanks Kay Whitt!
When I was young and went to sewing school we were taught to make two rows of gathered stitch. Then you pull the gathers a little bit and fit in the sleeve to sleeve hole. We also marked like yours.
3:26 Just a thought: If you don't have this fancy thing, slides your fabric to the side of your ironing board so the one seem falls of the board. Than that seem is out of the way, so you can iron without creases.
I always sew a long stitch along the area to be eased in on the sleeve. After joining the slerve to the bodice, simply pull out the long stitch. Works every time.
It would be helpful to see this from your right side as you ease the sleeve in. From the left side we can only see the bodice and not the easing that's occurring underneath it.
So when you're easing the fabric in with your left hand, which is between the 2 layers, what you're doing is pulling the lower, longer layer out, away from the shorter layer, to make them line up? You're sort of gathering the longer layer with your left hand?
Never saw this method....u make it seem soooo easy😊 I would like to try yr method as I always get pluckers when setting in sleeves 😩Tks so much u r a good teacher 👍🏻
I love all your videos. I started to sew again after many years and you have taught or reminded me of so many techniques. Just two questions: Where did you get that sleeve ironing board, and, second, could u get the camera person to get better views? We are missing out on a lot.
Just put your finger against the presser foot and let go when it bunches. Then do the same again. This technique is called "crimping". It works easily for easing the sleeve in!!! This woman is good, but she would have beautiful results without trepidation if she used the crimping method!!! 😊
I love your videos, I learn a lot from them. I sew but I do not make clothing for myself. I have a lot of problem getting a pattern to fit me correctly. I have made a few things in the past but like I said they end up not fitting me the way I want them to. What should I do?
Love the techniques I had tried the bias before and I couldn’t get the front to lay down flat for me it kind a like stuck out for some reason I don’t know why but I’m going to try it again to see if I can get it to lay flat
I'm a beginner, and I learned a considerable amount from your tutorial. I am returning to sewing in middle age, bought a pattern, and the directions for sleeve insertion were practically non-existent. (I am however lusting after your surger. Might have to put that on my 'wish list'. thanks.
Wonderful guide thank you. I wonder what it will be like with jersey fabric? I might have my work cut out for me as I"m a beginner, but this method looks like its worth getting down.
It really is so difficult to see you easing . Maybe it would help to first demonstate what the easing process looks like WITHOUT 2 layers . Then put the 2 layers together. It was never clear on how to ease in the extra fabrick. You have a great camera.
This is a new technique for me and will definitely give it a try. I am confused about the pressing toward the bodice though. Is there a special reason for pressing it that way in this garment?
Pressing the seam into the sleeve will add bulk and the sleeve won't appear as smooth. A good general rule is to press seam allowances toward the center of the body (or toward the top if you're putting on a waistband.)
Thanks for the rapid response. I want to try your method. I've tried a thousand I think and just can't get them set in without a few little pleats that scream "she made me!"
Im going to try this technique next time because placing the ease stitching can create puckering. But im confused by the sleeves being bigger than the sleeves whole will it be an issue? Well guess Ill found out. Thanks
I like your technique except for pressing the seam allowance toward the bodice. I like pressing the seam allowance toward the sleeve so that it supports the rounded area of the sleeve cap and the bodice area around the armhole stays flat.
Late to the party but... I've watched it on half speed and I think what's happening is the right hand is holding the top bodice fabric frim and not allowing it to go under the foot at the same speed as the bottom sleeve fabric - I think when she notes you need to be careful that you leave enough fabric in the easing and not ease too much, her hand is at the next notch holding the fabric together at that point - then her hand goes back and she just seems to be holding that top fabric a smidge out while I think her other hand must be easing forward the bottom fabric. Possibly.
I like the video and the technique. The thing I do not understand is why she did not use the free-arm of the serger (the serger she is using has free-arm capability).

Explanations are good, however, viewing is horrible, please review your tutorials, actually seeing what your doing is not good, PLEASE use a different angle when sewing, so viewers can actually see what your doing! Thank you!
I find her method lazy. After carefully pressing the top seam one way, she did not take care to sew the seam when attaching the sleeve in the same direction

I gotta say, I finally feel like I understand a sewing tutorial. I love the way you explain things! thank you for the help.

Yes! I came here before to learn to sew in my sleeve. You have the best technique! Thanks!
I've always struggled with fixing the sleeves. Never realised that it could be done so easily.
Thank you.
I have been trying to figure out how to sew sleeves without and E stitch, and this is the best video that I have found! You are a great teacher and explain so simply and beautifully. Thank you! What a great method!
I used this method when making my son's shirt and it came out perfectly.

I love how you “looped” the thread chain around your finger before cutting it off. This way, you have enough of a chain to start again. Brilliant!
I have to say this is one of the best videos I have seen on how to sew a set in sleeve, I am new to sewing clothing and have been putting off trying to do the sleeves......many thanks Kay Whitt!
Many thanks for showing us this technique. I shall never feel intimidated about doing inset sleeves ever again!
Can't wait to try this technique! She made it look so simple.
When I was young and went to sewing school we were taught to make two rows of gathered stitch. Then you pull the gathers a little bit and fit in the sleeve to sleeve hole. We also marked like yours.
Your personal style in this video is downright gorgeous.
Just used this method and I must say “genius, it came out perfect “. Thank you for sharing.👌🏾👍

Dorcas, can you elaborate on your technique? Do you mean a basting-length stitch? What do you do with it? Is it the gathering thread?? Thank you, J.
It would be helpful to see this from your right side as you ease the sleeve in. From the left side we can only see the bodice and not the easing that's occurring underneath it.
I have never seen this technique before. It is a great idea. I will try this on my next set in sleeve! Thanks

OMG, I've been doing it wrong! 😓Thanks so much for this easy-to-follow tutorial! ❤️
So much easier than having to stitch the easing. Thanks so much!
Fantastic tutorial! Really helped me do this for the first time!
Great technique! Do you increase or decrease the presser foot tension to help with the ease??
I love all your videos. I started to sew again after many years and you have taught or reminded me of so many techniques. Just two questions: Where did you get that sleeve ironing board, and, second, could u get the camera person to get better views? We are missing out on a lot.

Very clear to understand and helpful. Good tutorial. Thank you.
Thanks so much! I finally get it!

Watched your video and it all made so much more sense! My sleeve looks far better now. Thanks so much!
I just do a little gathering baste stitch. Certainly gets an even easing of the sleeve. None of that fussing around.
It sure would have been nice to see what you were doing because all I saw was the top fabric and not how you were manipulating the sleeve head.
I'm a beginner, and I learned a considerable amount from your tutorial. I am returning to sewing in middle age, bought a pattern, and the directions for sleeve insertion were practically non-existent. (I am however lusting after your surger. Might have to put that on my 'wish list'. thanks.
am gonna try this bc I hate gathering that cap and lots of pins thanks for sharing
Wonderful guide thank you. I wonder what it will be like with jersey fabric? I might have my work cut out for me as I"m a beginner, but this method looks like its worth getting down.
Jersey is alot easier as it stretches to fit the bodice and doesnt need to be eased in
Glad I stumbled on your video.
Hi. Hello. Howdy. Wow. Thanks for sharing.
Wow...perfect. maam can you explain the sleeve cutting formula
It really is so difficult to see you easing . Maybe it would help to first demonstate what the easing process looks like WITHOUT 2 layers . Then put the 2 layers together. It was never clear on how to ease in the extra fabrick. You have a great camera.
That is one BIG sewing machine!
bilden thanks you My Sleeves look so much better now cheers Dee
This looks good. I wonder why people pressed thumb down.
Kay when you folded the sleeve and serged the seam of the together instead serging each side separate.?
Clever!
LOVE first time perfect after years of frustration.
Great tutorial, thank you!

DeeDee Steele she
Made me
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Im going to try this technique next time because placing the ease stitching can create puckering. But im confused by the sleeves being bigger than the sleeves whole will it be an issue? Well guess Ill found out. Thanks
are you pulling on the bodice material to make it fit? is having a 1/2 inch seam part of the trick to make it fit w/o puckers? Thanks
That was so good...you made that like easy and it’s not🙂 thank you, it takes practice for sure
Thank you for the technique
Good job.
Like blue dress
Very perfect teaching sleeve pattern
Thnku mam, pls make more n more video related to stitching partt...
would love the pattern# for that wrap dress it doesnt look flare which I been looking for a more straight look thanks in advance
Very...very..good
I like your technique except for pressing the seam allowance toward the bodice. I like pressing the seam allowance toward the sleeve so that it supports the rounded area of the sleeve cap and the bodice area around the armhole stays flat.
Really helpful and easy to follow. It may have been a wee bit easier to see with plain fabric, as the patterned fabric was a bit distracting.
What kind of machine do u have
Thank you, great info!
Does this work with knits or jersey knits?
I think my sleeve is too big i just cant get it in without gathers on top ..any advice...
Kay, are you pushing or pulling the fabric with your left hand? That isn't clear in the video. Please explain. Thanks.
I am holding the upper layer steady with my right hand and gently pushing the fabric of the sleeve (lower layer) with my left hand.
Sorry i'm so stupid, but what exactly are you doing when you are 'easing in' (6:05).
No gathering stitch?
Does this technique work with a polyester satin?
I like it, so easy.
Very nice
Thank you!
Nice
Can you show how to draft a sleeve pattern please
Why do you sew the sleeve that way instead sewing the top first withpleas and after that sew the side ??
That is magic, but I still don't understand exactly what the hand between the bodice and sleeve actually is doing to ease the sleeve in.
Would have been nice had you said I needed a serger in the beginning.
You don’t really explain what you are doing with your hand when you’re easing.
Possibly.
Thanks
I like it very easy selves
thank you

i think the sleeve seam should be pessed through the sleeve; ev.one i ever saw was.
I like the video and the technique. The thing I do not understand is why she did not use the free-arm of the serger (the serger she is using has free-arm capability).

This is not clear at all!Why doesnt it show what she’s doing with her hands. I give this a failing grade !
I’m new to serging and I noticed that the sleeve seam was sewn right at the edge. Don’t you need to have all seams 5/8”?
She sewed a 1/2 seam putting in the sleeve and then went back and did the serging at the edge.
I find her method lazy. After carefully pressing the top seam one way, she did not take care to sew the seam when attaching the sleeve in the same direction

Great tutorial! Thank you so much!
