Little bit, but we know it is sponsored by Summit, and let's face it. Summit is a reputable business. I've never had an issue with them in the twenty some years I've dealt with them.
@Sloppy Mechanics After getting familiar with your general rebuild routine this video is making me feel some type of way, certainly not sloppy lol. No shade, just I think it's neat to see how certain approaches to tasks can manifest so differently for different folks. Would love to see y'all get together at a drag strip or maybe do a podcast!
Hi Chris! So great to hear from you sir! Thank you for watching my video and I can’t thank you enough for the excellent resource for all of us DIY’ers! 👍🏻
Although I try to avoid being overly critical of youtube videos in general, it is IRRESPONSIBLE not to open up the piston ring gaps on a motor that is to be turbocharged when you are that far into the motor. Turbos build excessive heat in the combustion chamber, which causes the piston rings to grow more than they would on a stock motor. This closes up the ring gaps and pushes the rings out into the cylinder wall, causing deep scoring. This scoring may get so deep that it may require you to replace the block. If you watched the turbo camaro series on Motortrend's Hot Rod Garage, this is EXACTLY why the motor blew up on that project. Opening up the ring gap from .016 to .020 will save you from destroying that motor. Also, if you plan on more that a few psi of boost, you should have used ARP head studs to keep the head gaskets from blowing prematurely, they can provide MUCH more in the way of clamping force.
i love watching car guy youtubers, n some ppl do budget builds, so ppl do build it up enough to do donuts, burn outs etc, some ppl do wacky builds, Tom your builds remind of pro shops, you know the garages that didnt do oil changes. you brought your car there for one reason only, you wanted your car faster but to look and function like its OEM. awesome job my man!
One of the best parts about books like that is; you'll learn things that you didn't know you'd need to know. Like... you can't get an answer to a question that you haven't asked, if you get what I'm sayin'.
Thanks for the information on the book for rebuilding an LS. I just purchased it due to the quality of the book, but also based on your recommendation.
Thanks man! Oh no, definitely not necessary, just how I like to work, I would never say my way is the best or right, modding cars is just about having fun and trying new things in my opinion 👍🏻
So therapeutic to watch! To me, you represent the best of both worlds; a very professional, yet common man-next-door gear head enthusiast. Very much appreciate all the efforts you take to produce these wonderful episodes.
I'm kinda surprised you didn't open up your ring gaps. You would have had to pull the pistons, but when your that close to them and it sounds like your gonna turbo it. Think it would have been the best time to do it.
THIS! If you don't gap them before boost you're going to lose one of the ringlands which will more than likely toast the block AND the combustion chamber on the head. Don't remember if it was hot rod or motortrend that boosted these stock junkyard motors and the only fail points up to 1000hp were the ring gaps and valve springs. I hope he reads the comments and sees this before he installs the motor
@@gsppuffer Maybe at the beginning, but he said he was going to do the build in stages so I would assume at some point he is going to turn it up. If you're that deep into the engine already, it can't possibly hurt to add a few thousandths to the gap but it absolutely CAN hurt if you don't.
@@ccrDan he pushed it to 20+ pounds and 800hp.Tom isn't like that he's thorough in his work to make it right so he's probably staying low boost this stage so no reason to open them up

So I was watching for a while and stopped your video to see how much time was left. I was sad to see I was already halfway through. Time sure flies when you are watching a master at work. Looking forward to the next episode.
Hi Gary! Always a pleasure to hear from you and thank you for always being so kind and supportive of my crazy out of control hobby. 😀 have a great weekend sir! 👍🏻
Anyone who is tearing down, or assembling an engine on their own, should pay close attention to how meticulous Tom is at every step of this build. There is a lot to be learned from him. Spectacular work Tom, as usual.
Thank you for saying that Joe! Wish you were up here in Tennessee helping me out, I know you'd have some better ideas and solutions for this beast. Have a good day man 👍🏻
Great video, Tom. I really appreciate how you don't skip over the less glamorous, yet very important parts of engine building. Looking forward to the next one!
I'm honestly mad that I haven't found this channel before now. I've been following since the start of this build, and I cannot help but feel Tom is a mix of the best parts of ChrisFix and Cleetus Mcfarland. Awesome channel and videos!
I haven't done a car build in a while but the last one had me ordering a few thousand $ from Summit. They are solid gold. From great prices to huge inventory, tech support, return policy and tech videos.
Sometimes i tend to forget hes sponsored to be perfectly honest. I feel like 90% of the time i want to know where a "mechanic" on youtube sourced a part theres no mention in the video, discription or comments. I feel like Tom is just really good at relaying any information you/or anyone else might care to ask about down the road. That being said ive been a fanboy for a long time so im biased. Ps. The Buick Regal was my favorite build. Ive always loved the 87. But you really perfected it. Keep up all the hard work man you're honestly a one of a kind!
Yet another project I can not wait to see finished :) Also want to say, this is kind of a nice, oddball, out-of-the-box build. I rarely see anyone V8 swapping the Tacoma, I am sure people do it, but I have never really had it catch my eye anywhere. If this is anything like Thunderbolt, it will be epic!
Don't mind me, just watching a Tom's Turbo video *holy crap ICT Billet* Not only from my hometown, but a part of it I visit on a regular basis! That was a pleasant surprise.
