It would have been more useful if I had found it sooner!
I recently built myself a new PC and so I ended up re-building Hauptwerk from scratch. I wanted to use the "new" routing system and find out how it all worked. It took an embarrassingly long time. So long that I am not going to say how long it took. It was just four days of my life that I would never get back!
I am sure it all makes perfect sense to anyone who has recording studio experience but to me it was all gobbledegook. Compound that with the fact that HW like to make some settings for you, calls everything an extremely long name and duplicates controls all over the place to make things easier(!) and I did not find it at all easy. Now I have cracked the three basic types of bus and the order they expect to be in it all becomes clear (er).

You are great at explaining what is going on. You are the only organist that I know of on RUclips that is willing to get into the nuts and bolts! I appreciate it very much! Your goal appears to be helping everyone become better!

That my friend is WRONG. Last year, Jerry Martin did that tour of the mixer already and was the fist. And I myself explained all that in German just one month before that. ruclips.net/video/9STpd1drUAc/видео.html So sorry, but do better research please! :)

Excellent! Well done on laying this difficult to understand concept out in a very methodical way. I highly recommend that people delete the default names as you have recommended, and uncheck default options, and take complete control from the very beginning. Really really well done.

Thanks Richard. Probably the single biggest tip in the vid is starting from the speakers/output and working forward to the sample set/input.
Looks like Hauptwerk is designed to also accommodate the real life variations in the physical location of the sound by being able to choose different speaker sets for different organs. This vid will become standard must-watch for anyone starting out with Hauptwerk. Thanks.

Fantastic learning time for me. I have configured Hauptwerk by much confusion already. After watching this video only, I backed up and did the things you showed how to setup the software. It sure made a difference with this organ. I'm using Theater und Philharmonic for my upcoming client I'm putting this system together for. It is amazing software, but the book is somewhat confusing. Your video on this part was an eye opener! Thank you for your time to help those of us using Hauptwerk. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. BTW... I'm using the "TUP" organ because of one of your videos playing that organ. Thank you again!!

Thank you for this clear tutorial. I was so impressed I watched it 3 times then upgraded from v6 to v7 (you should be on commission!). Never thought of deleting all those wordy descriptions; I've now got it all set up and everything now sounds great. Only problem is, now I know how easy it is, I now want to buy an even bigger audio interface and connect up another 6 speakers ... better warn the National Grid.

Thanks Richard! Super useful for building a better understanding of of the Audio in HW.
I'm really looking forward to the next video!
Very methodical explanation of the routing of sound, from the mapping of the sources and tracking the route it will follow to get to the human ears!
On so many levels I have been a recipient of so much of your expertise and really admire not only the skill that you bring to the BIS community but also your willingness to share that skill and knowledge with everyone. The organ world is definitely a richer place because you are in it.

Hi Richard. Thanks for this video. I hope these observations help in your journey to understanding this beast.
It really is a great start but has some issues that can confuse matters.
I did of course notice the four main confusing aspects of this mixer.
    1) The desired norm of the seemingly random word Perspective, used as a default label anywhere to avoid using the word widely misunderstood term - ‘bus’.
    2) The lack of understanding that the Perspectives 2 to 4 have their ‘volumes’ minimised. Despite your clarity of thought, Mr Dyde has really thought of a great hidden place in the depths to turn these volumes to zero. Why could not it just be a single tick box even as far back as the Rank Routing screen?
    3) The concern about all them buses having their tick boxes ticked in the nearest of many many dead buses in existence. The obvious danger of thinking that if you delete the labels, those bus’s links die too. This could result in all sorts of audio routes in existence in buses now without labels and now, a user would struggle to find where they are hiding.
    4) I was not happy with the initial gloss over the audio interface optional labels on the right not being filled in. How many folk out there have software to go with their audio/midi interfaces that offer the option of labelling the output channels? I’ve had my Motu for a good while and I have not yet come across that option yet but I’ll be having a look for sure.
    Best wishes.

    • @caroline.balfour

Hugo knows about buses. The wheels on the bus go round and round! 🚌

    • @herrcastor
      @herrcastor 2 года назад +1

Maurice is correct that the imprecise use of the term ‘perspective’ when meaning (primary) bus, would be confusing to a beginner, as ‘perspective’ means something else quite different in the HW mixer world.
Going backwards from speakers to ranks is indeed probably the most intuitive way to understand it.
But the lack of a graphical view of how audio flows then through from rank-routing, mixer bus groups, primary buses (and perhaps then intermediate/master mix buses) towards the interface/speakers, is a shame. A picture paints a thousand words, etc.
One *does* exist on another HW user’s site and YT channel, and is often mentioned/linked on FB groups.

A fantastic video. Thanks. Actually looking to find how to turn down one note (8’ C) which through my audio/in my room is noticeably louder than all other nearby notes. In headphones all is even! I will keep looking…..but your video is great. Hauptwerk should employ you to do training videos. Thanks.

Richard, thank you for putting this together, I hope this video will stay here long enough for me to make use of it. My iLok Dongle arrives tomorrow and I will finally upgrade from HW4 to HW7. Thank you very much, Richard! At last, an explanation of the Hauptwerk Mixer which I can understand! So far my efforts with the Mixer have been hit and miss, and the HW User Guide has only served to confuse me further. Your explanation has inspired me to entirely revise my audio setup from scratch. Has the second video, talking about how to create a rear channel from a stereo sample set, been produced yet?

  • @fjbrady

Another great video. The first thing I got out of it is the audio interface you use. I'm not satisfied with the sound quality I get from my motherboards audio. There are plenty of choices out there but yours works, the price it right and it gets good reviews. Guess I'll order one tonight. Thanks!
Btw, I assume it will also make my playing sound as good as yours 🤣

Presumably, if you're configuring for a youtube feed, you only mix to a 2 channel stereo mix and try to emulate the physical locations of that particular physical organ.

Suppose you want to send a perspective to two channels. Can that be done somehow? The drop-down in the audio mixer is specifically labelled "Audio output (device) channel(s)" with the optional plural, but I don't see any way of actually selecting multiple channels.

What are your physical connections? It seems like you're getting 7 channels from a 4 channel interface, assuming left and right for each speaker pair and 1 channel for the sub.

Hi. I see you have a lot of knowledge about Hauptwerk. How are your organs run? Maybe you know how to configure the program to run after turning on the power, i.e. turned on the system, then hauptwerk started and samples were loaded. Not every organist knows how to use a computer. Is it possible to do it like in a normal digital instrument?
