This should make Dougo’s day. I’m just a little older. Had a JD shop Forman tell me I should have bought extended warranty on a tractor. I give him an understanding that if John Deere made quality equipment like they used to do they wouldn’t need extended warranty. They used to didn’t know what it even was.
Growing up in the heart of farm country in Minnesota in the 60's and 70's never heard of a tractor engine blowing up. In fact most of those engines are still running today.

I have never seen anything like that before in my years with farming. Wow. Beautifully said Steve. I live in UK, and for several years, I was an Ag Engineer. OK it was 40 yrs ago, but have seen this scenario several times, having worked for a few different dealers and differing manufacturers around the country. The fact that the engine blew isn't that strange, it does happen. But with all the recent changes, the story goes on. Quality of manufacture is a result of JIT (just in time) spares holding. No one wants to have more than enough inventory than they need so just order enough for what they plan to build. That goes all the way down the line, and most only store what they need. That is why there are back orders everywhere, nobody has more than they need now! If the economy were different, everyone would be able to get what they want, when they want it. Not with things the way they are, big changes need to happen, but that is a different story... Thanks for you input ity gives those who don't understand why/how thing work, your a pleasure to read , keep up the good work. Oh and I agree with your comments re: Amy. She is a treasure. And imagine life without Dougo - Not conceivable, he is the power behind Larson Farms. Love the man!

I agree 100% with you !!!! It's unbelievable to say the least. Combines back in the days of 60s and 70s would last seemed like forever but when you have a machine costing close to a million bucks blowing up is beyond belief.
its all down to chance, they got very unlucky.. combines are definately more prone to breakdown these days but thats because they are much more complicated expecially with the electronics. that complexity is there for a reason though and i think we would see ppl still combining with those 70s models if they really were better
We had a new case 100 hp tractor in which the engine lasted 50 hours before it ceased. I am 70 and never had this happen before. Old engines went on and on. We had one tractor that 20000 hours on it and was stillvgoing strong. Things were built to last not any more. Now we live in a throw away society. Pleased to learn they fixed it quickly for you. Prayers Amy. I'm a retired firefighter that broke my back in the line of duty. 3x in my neck, a single & double plate, 10 screws. I am on my 2nd set of rods in my back. L2-S1 is totally fused. Then last year a spinal cord stimulator gone wrong. An infection & an egg sized abscess removed. This made 6 times in my back. Take care & wishing you the best of luck with your healing. I'll probably add Dougo too. Bet that motor ordeal had him on his last nerve.
As a farmer Doug, you know that things break no matter the color. My dad was a John Deere mechanic from the early 60s into the 1990s. Rods going through the blocks due to bearing failures were not unknown with all makes. I can remember many a block was taken to our local machine shop where the hole was patched then returnec to the dealership, new parts installed, and the combine quickly returned to service. Dad worked on all brands. It was a different time.
I don't know what Deere uses for sure, but they may be using powdered metal connecting rods. That is a process used that reduces cost of manufacturing over forging or casting rods. Rather than casting a rod using "liquid" metal or forging a billet, you use a metal powder under pressure to make the rod. The crank and pin bores are machined then the rod cap is "removed" by cracking the end of the rod off. Makes a unique rod cap that doesn't require further machining. It can work fine as long as it's done right. They might have had some Q.C. issues along the way.
Amy, glad to hear that you are taking care of yourself and resting. I am a BIG fan of PRP and have had tremendous success using it on my knees and back.

I've had four recalls so far on my 2022 pick-up truck and believe poor quality is an issue in many industries. Doug you are a natural with the camera. I would be very frustrated too considering the amount of investment you have in that like new combine. I'm also with you on the lack of quality today. I believe a good part of it is the emissions guide lines the manufactures have to follow has greatly shortened the life of modern engines. EPA has way to much power over us in my opinion. Mabe you should of considered keeping the 9750 as a back up after the steering column was repaired of course. Wishing well with your treatments Amy.

I had my rotator cuff and labrum injury treated that way 2 years ago and my shoulder is good and now I’m in the process of getting the other shoulder scheduled for it.

Hi Amy, I had Spinal Stenosis (which I didn't know about) and had a car accident which broke my neck. Because of the Stenosis it damaged my Spinal Cord and I ended up a Quadriplegic. Thankfully over the course of two years of Physical and Occupational therapy I can now walk and use both arms although with difficulty. My take on the whole process is always to try the non-surgical methods first. my accident was almost 20 years ago and I still have to do Physical therapy quite often but it is worth it. I live a very rewarding life, thanks to the support and love from my family and my Physical therapist at the Minneapolis VA Spinal Cord Injury center. The other thing I have determined is if you keep a positive attitude it helps the healing process.
A Missouri farmer told me this a few years ago - “It’s a lot more like it is now than it used to be”. He was describing how much crap is being is manufactured now and so much doesn’t work or fails early. Best wishes Amy. I had a torn Rotator Cuff two years ago. To avoid surgery, I went with Stem Cell’s worked wonderfully in conjunction with PT.
Doug you are the best. Great job on the motor explosion and the quality of products nowdays . We are at the mercy of the manufacture of like you said whatever color brand you choose. It seems as if the mindset is everything is disposable after a couple of year and we will just buy a new one. We are not going to survive this mentality. In all fairness to John Deere, the combine made it 360 hours just fine, it was the 361st hour that things went south.

We are praying for your speedy recovery. Yes, Dougo was disappointed with the engine going "boom" as Brodie described it, after running 360 hours.

Hopefully things improve for everyone, Dougo don’t let those issues cause you to change who you are. You have no control of what happened,say to yourself, We are lucky no harm came to anyone, tomorrow is a day you can be thankful will come!

You guys are great very positive attitude as you show on videos, I understand the combine frustration, I am a 24.5 year Deere Field Tech and I do agree customers pay way to much money for an inferior product now days. And Mrs Amy you hang in there God is with you and we are all as well.
