Thanks for the video!! I’ve never square filed a chain by hand, only ever used a grinder so it’s nice to get a different perspective on it. I’m interested in Scott’s theory that a square ground chain will “stay” sharper then a round filed chain, it’s the opposite of what I’ve always assumed to be right. Not saying he’s wrong, I would like to test it out myself. I completely agree that a semi chisel chain will cut better when dull, not that I use semi chisel often unless I’m cutting in complete crap wood. I also adjust my filing angle depending on what I’m cutting in like Scott had mentioned, hard wood, soft wood, frozen, dirty, etc... Sorry for the long post but you’re doing a fantastic job on these videos. I messaged Scott a couple days ago and I’m sending a 661 to him shortly to get ported, super stoked!! Also how do a guy get his hands on a Tree Monkey T-Shirt??!!!
thanks guys. I sit at the table with coffee, and put the chain in my lap, and just file without the saw, without the vice, , , , easy to control, and it does not really take a lot of pressure to do a little file job like this. really, who would have thunk it.
Interesting. Pretty cool. If you do tree service or firewood, where speed is key and saw are constantly being dulled i dono how beneficial this would be but cool non the less.
Kinda pissing me off that I've lived five miles from this dude all my life (19 years) and as far as I know have never met him personally. I've been in his shop a time or two but not recently.
Good video, I watched an old man round file from the outside of the tooth once , his chains were sharp and you couldn't tell him he was wrong. I think people like the mystery of square filing more then anything, kinda like "hey there's a secret that'll make you the fastest Sawyer ever! ,and only I know it" but honestly I like big old round chipper for suspicious trees.
I hit a T post and 2 wire fences in trees this year. Round chipper chain laughed at it . Square is faster I don't disagree, but all wood has the potential for objects.
Main thing is what type of chain does your eco system support? Do you have a Simington grinder? Barring that, are you good with (expensive) Pferd/Vellorbe Square bit files? If'n you don't and you wanna get into square chain, are you a professional logger that require the reduced cutting time & improved control and can pay for it (because that's what Square files/Simington grinders do, cost money)? Or are you fine with round chain?
When you say put it on the Silvey, which model are you talking about? If you want a video thats going to get views, then by all means put one out on how to properly use the silvey razursharp 2 please. I have one, my only issue is no matter what I adjust, I'm still grinding into the tie strap more than I'd like. Not sure if its the way the wheel is dressed or what? Hopefully you'll do a video!
@@nevadasparky79 you may have already figured this out. But to keep from grinding into your tie straps. Where your chain carrier bolts to the grinder. Loosen that bolt and move the carrier back a little. That will also have some effect on cutter plate angles. The closer the the carrier is to the wheel the more aggressive the chain will be. I used to grind on a razor sharp, I never really liked it that much. If you get a chance, try to pick up a simington. In my opinion they are a better grinder and easier to use.
@@jakemesa3211 I did figure that out reading instructions. The biggest problem I was having was the grinding wheel arbor, was set to low, once I moved the arbor and the wheel up about 1/16th of a inch, I was no longer hitting the tie straps. I've used the simington, it is quicker and the adjustable chain height on the swing arm was very helpful. Once I figured the razorsharp. 2 out I no longer have any issues grinding very good fast cutting chains with it, it's just slower is all. I want to make the grinding wheel height easier to adjust them it would be perfect for me.
@@nevadasparky79 I never had a problem with arbor hight with the one I used to have. The main complaint I had with the razor sharp was that it was very used when I got it and the slide for the carrier was worn out. Sent the carrier to maddsens. They rebuilt the slide. After grinding everyday for two years on it. It was worn out again even making sure it was cleaned and oiled properly. The slide has a tendency to "stick" when the slide gets out of adjustment. And once the slide gets some play in it it tends to not grind the same from side to side. At least in my experience. Three years ago sacked up and bought a new simington. Best investment I could have made. Both are good grinders. I just prefer the simington for the amount of grinding I do.

Wow, great to hear from older saw guys like that. So much wisdom and different information to think on. Love it.
That looks like low profile chain and that file is to big for low profile brother !!! That wont cut hot butter !! Unless the sun is out lmao

Some people file the opposite direction to keep from creating a bur on the cutting tip
I like Square filing and Square Ground Chains. Greetings from Germany!

Oh FFS you 2 ! Makes a sweet blade video with NLA files 👌
lol
That was a valorbe 4 sided square chain file. Most of them are 6 sided.
You can still get those files.
ciao ti do un consiglio nel bosco non potrai farlo il tondino è e rimane il migliore ma va saputo usare poi le affilature con tondino durano di più.

He is filing a semi skip chaim, you never see anyone use these chains on youtube :D
nice file we can only get short files
NEVER drag a file backwards. All it does is dull the file.
Really fast
100% right finally another person that gets it right drives me bonkers when people try to file backwards👍
👍👍
No it doesn’t
404 chaen
