@Upper echelon, a better tactic is placing the infantry behind the archers in a shieldwall, then charge the infantry when archers are about to be attacked. Your infantry is breaking your crossbowmans line of sight in your current placement. Once you give the infantry a charge command. They will charge through the archers, The AI is really good at charging through archers. Just like the elves in the battle of the five armies. It works wonders. Try it and update your video! Even in medieval times archers were always in the front, and when enemy got to engaging distance, only then the archers were swapped for infantry.

The game play footage reminds me of playing Vikings Conquest Reforged Edition where I used that tactic against hordes of Irish spear men.
I commented on one of your streams of using archers and cavalry to confuse pathfinding of infantry to expose them to enfilade archer fire.
Anyway, new to this channel and really enjoying the Bannerlord content and happy with yourself enjoying M&B as I did. Good day :)

That strategy is good for Units that don't have Big Shields.
If you have a unit with big shields like UEG does then you can park them in the front and the Dumb AI archers will shoot into the Shields all day. Which is why it works well in game.
If you have foot units with no shields then you can keep them in reserve like that to keep them from being shot at.
This strategy works really well with Vladian Crossbowmen + Polearm infantry. Since the crossbow men have HUGE shields and good armor they can tank enemy arrow fire pretty well actually. The Polearms mince anything that gets close, even the level 3 billhooks are wicked dangerous for their tier.
Vladian Heavy Cav is also some of the best in the game as well, so that's fun to play with too.

Just so you are aware of what F6 actually does for unit type and how you can recreate it with other commands.
    Infantry will Advance into melee.
Archers will assume a Loose formation then Advance within 100ft before expending all ammo, falling back as need be to maintain range, before reverting to Infantry AI.
Infantry with Throwing weapons will use Archer AI within 20ft.
    Cavalry will Charge into melee.
Cavalry Archers will also Charge, but their AI will circle the enemy within 100ft until ammo is expended, then use Cavalry AI.
Cavalry with Throwing weapons will also use Cavalry Archer AI within 20ft.
Also despite history proving the opposite innumerable times, Cavalry can easily move through Infantry/Archer formations, even through the densest Squares at a walk, and will only be stopped by a well timed Polearm thrust to the horse or by other Cavalry. So yeah, there's no surprise that Cavalry are ridiculously powerful when their main advantage can only reliably be countered by other Cavalry.
As for what each command does.
Follow Me will cause your units to follow you at roughly the center of their formation near the front rank, and will engage enemy within range to the front of the unit's formation regardless of enemy position, and will constantly reform around you as you move position, though not turn direction what so ever.
To Position will cause your units to move to a certain position in formation, and will engage enemy within range to the front of the unit's formation regardless of enemy position, and reform as casualties mount.
Advance will cause your units to move toward the nearest and densest enemy formation in formation, and will engage enemy within range to the front of the units formation regardless of enemy position, and reform as casualties mount.
Charge will cause your units to move toward the nearest and density enemy formation in formation, and will engage enemy within range to all directions, breaking off as need be, and will not reform unless told to.
So far I would like to note that Charge is the only option that allows your units to fight enemy to their flanks and rear.
Fallback will cause your units to move toward the nearest map boundary in formation.
Retreat will cause your units to move toward the nearest map boundary individually.
Face Position will cause your units to face in a certain direction regardless of enemy position, while each unit will only turn to engage those units within their frontal arc, this order will be temporarily disabled if told to Charge.
Face Enemy will cause your units to face the nearest and densest enemy formation, moving units into and out of range to maintain formation if on the Advance, or as individual units on the Charge.
The formations are simple enough, they put your units into a specific pattern, save for Scatter which does nothing, while Shield Wall, Circle, and Square will also force them to block.
However it is worth noting that often the denser formations such as Shield Wall or Square will cause your infantry to clip into one another, and thus be unable to injure the enemy as their attacks rebound off one another. So utilizing more spread out formations can be useful for maximizing your unit's lethality.
As for the dreaded Cavalry Archer horde...
There is no easy way to beat them, the best way I have found to do so, is a 50/50 Heavy Cavalry/Archer formation, the Heavy Cavalry put into a Shield Wall and Charged into the enemy will get tangled up with the enemy Cavalry Archers, giving your own Archers time to pick them off. The Archers however are best set to Loose and Charge, to reduce the impact of Cavalry Archer fire and ensuring they will attack in all directions. With this and 4v3 advantage will destroy the Cavalry Archer force, albeit at significant cost in Heavy Cav.
The best Combo for this tactic are unsurprisingly Vlandian Knights and Crossbowmen, the former being the tankiest Heavy Cav, and the latter the Archers with the greatest armor penetration and shields. Though normal Archers do have the advantage that they can pick up missed enemy arrows and fire them back.
Alternatively one could face Cavalry Archers at 2v1 advantage with just Archers or Infantry using the above formations, the higher tier the better, though Battanian Fians are particularly powerful, while Kuzaite Infantry aren't half bad either, really any infantry with large shields and throwing weapons are wonderful.
Honestly you'd be surprised how useful Charge and Shield Wall are given how AI is.
That is to say they will focus the closest unit even if there's another with it's back exposed just beyond. So getting units to chase down cavalry with their shields up or to spread out and just shoot away tends to work out surprisingly well when one can't reliably cheese the AI.

Thank you for such a helpful comment! Though I would like to add something. F6 seems to do a little more than what you mentioned, specially with cavalry. At first, the cavalry will divide itself into two groups, and protect the flanks of the main formation (Infantry and Archers). In my experience, as soon as the Infantry starts engaging with the enemy, the Cavalry will constantly change its strategy. Sometimes they charge at the enemy formation, sometimes they go back to protecting the flanks. I couldn't tell you everything they do because I'm usually busy hunting down horse archers and their leaders. I find it very useful to F6 the Cavalry in the veggies of battles as they'll charge to protect the formation if enemy cavalry comes charging in, and will go back to protect the flanks once enemy cavalry retreats.

    • @justinharris5024
      @justinharris5024 4 года назад +3

F6 is a lot more dynamic than what you describe, as it performs relative to the situation.
If you have a large cav force, delegating will either split them in two formations to cover flanks, or be put in the vanguard which will charge when the infantry advance(rare occurence).
Note every formation except HA work in relation to the infantry position.
      Great info still of course!

@Upper Echelon Gamers one thing you may want to add to your siege strategy is deploying your trebuchets after you hit midnight (let the moon go to the left a bit). i don't know when/if this will be patched out but right now, deploying at night means they get 1 hit on the defenses for free, before those defenses react. also, assault at night for the very same reason. historically speaking, night attacks have always had more of an impact on defenders than daylight for a very simple reason: watching for enemies without light on the ground is very hard, unless you have soldiers/scouts trained specifically for seeing in the darkness (which no one ever bothers to do). executing an assault at night makes the enemy archers not target your troops until you either attack them outright with your own archers or until your troops reach the wall itself.

    - Have your cavalry light their weapons on fire and charge the enemy in open field.
    - If available, your trebuchets should also be firing at this point.
    - Everyone else waits how this turns out.
    - Should your cavalry die, wait for the enemy to charge your troops and then retreat.

Then as my infantry reach the top the meat grinders will expose un sheilded parts of their torso to fight in melee and then get shot by my hand picked archers from the ground

I wish the game would have a tactical AI capable enough to invalidate a tactic that essentially boils down to "cheese the enemy infantry". Disrupting an Infantry formation with Cavalry charges is fair and is historical, but locking hundreds of infantry in place by virtue of being a single rider circling around them is just exploiting bad AI.
Regarding Horse Archers, I think one issue could be the removal of the Horse Archery skill. In M&B Warband, your accuracy on horseback was abyssimal (and even when stationary it was bad), and there was a seperate skill 'Horse Archery' that would reduce that penalty. Obviously, Horse Archers (which were only available to the Khazid equivalent, by the way) were still powerful, because the NPC troops did have that skill... but this was balanced by them having worse stats in other areas.
As for your Siege tactic, uuuuuurgh that's so dumb. I mean, it's perfectly reasonable to say that a siege army first builds a sufficient amount of siege engines, and then commits those at once. But why do you have to jump through those hoops to do the straight up most obvious thing? Bad game design. As well, I would assume the AI of course does not know about this and will just perform sub-average in every siege phase...
Kudos for reminding me of trying a no-horse run though. Looks damn speedy and kinda reminds me of the iconic 100-stat-man series.

Once you start using the strategy of circling too much the AI starts doing odd things like re-positioning spears and units inside the "blob" and they create a method to blob you into a stop. Yes, takes a few battles to take effect but it does learn, you do something too often and it combats you with a very effective counter.

I didn’t have much Calvary under my command but the 15 or so units did do wonders. I had melee cav follow me until they died, horse archers on skirmish until they died. I parked the archers on the hill in loose formation facing the enemy, infantry in shield wall in front of them. Because I was fighting Khuzait, they had a ton of horse archers, but if you can get in the mix of their death ball with a long glaive or axe and stay on their right side so they can’t turn around shoot you, you can cut many of them down easily. I ended up getting around 50 kills myself on a mix of horse archers, infantry, and archers before I finally went down. Ended up resolving the battle and winning with about half my force left and the garrison all but spent. Granted I did this on easy, so on realistic it may have taken quite a few more loads on the save before I could win. Long story short, this strategy works wonders, even if you’re facing lots of horse archers yourself.

Shield-wall has a fatal flaw to it that UEG should know: It cripples your troops performance in melee.
Because of the way the combat works, the AI 's weapon swings will collide with all the other shields that are being packed together.
Basically, the Shield-wall can be so dense that your troops can't swing their weapons properly.
This is why you should always order your troops to charge, or leave SW formation once they get into melee.
Otherwise Shield-wall is very good for stopping arrows obviously.
For Cavalry charges, the main thing that matters is density. Because of their speed and mass, cavalry will usually plow throw any infantry.
Spears can help, but not completely shut cav down. To completely shut cav down you need a super dense formation. Like basically a sardine box of troops. But a super dense formation like that will make you more susceptible to ranged fire, so it's kind of a balancing act to find the right density during battle.

They patched shield wall so units can complete most of their swings inside a shield wall in yesterdays hotfix patch. I guess it's a bit of a balancing act thought, if they make units able to attack as well in a shield wall as not then why would you ever not use a shield wall?
The way it is right now you can use shield wall right up to engaging the enemy, hit charge, then your units go more offensive sacrificing defence against missiles and melee alike.
I wonder if periodically reforming the shield wall, viking-style would help with units being singled out as happens a lot when you're outnumbered. It'd be great if a disciplined formation like the Romans had would work effectively in-game using formation commands but at the moment when you hit charge your men just spread out and get diced up no matter their elite tier.
      ruclips.net/video/XNdKm4WoMp4/видео.html
That's a vid covering the shield wall (and circle and square) changes.

Despite all the grumbling that archers are overpowered the biggest sweeping ballance problem in my mind is that the short bows are too high powered in comparison to the long bows and crossbows. Well trained foot archers behind a shield wall should absolutely slaughter cavalry archers. From the crusades there were a few battles were the heavily outnumbered Franks (particularly the Norman contingent of the first crusade led by Bohemond) formed up and held off huge numbers of mounted troops for hours. Because they out ranged them, could penetrate their armour, and being on foot could simply put more fire on each individual target. Meanwhile the cavalry archers simply couldn't do the same in return. There are descriptions of crusader Knights and footmen covered in arrows which git stuck in their armour but didn't penetrate deep enough to cause significant injury.

Imagine yourself to be one of the enemy infantrymen @ 3:10. You are among your brothers in Alary's army fighting for what you believe is right. As you charge, you see a single horseman in the middle of the field. "who could be dumb enough to stand off alone against us," you think to yourself. As you get closer, you realize it's the enemy commander, Upper Echelon Gamers, alone. You and the rest of your brothers are sprinting towards him with blood on your minds. He's so close; this war could be over in a moment. You could finally go home--to your wife and your growing children. It had been months since you've seen them. Suddenly your fantasy is interrupted when you see Commander Alary coming from the east, down from the mountain at an impressive speed. You've always looked up to him; he was harsh but a kind man at his core. He taught you what courage meant. Not through speech, but action. An encroaching feeling of doom begins to take hold, followed by a thought, "what if Commander Alary dies?" "No," you quickly reassure yourself, and just as sudden as the feeling came, it left. At that moment, they clash--miss. An unnerving sensation of relief fills your body. Before you were able to calm yourself a second time, they had clashed again. Commander Alary's head rolled on the snow-covered ground, drawing a spiral of sorts in droplets of his own blood. It didn't hurt. Not in the moment. Your unconscious swiftly repressed the fact that your commander's decapitated head was giving off steam, not 30 feet to your right. Victory no longer mattered, only survival. Unfortunately for you, your evisceration had already been written on the wall.

Best way to defeat horse archers is with masses foot bow and lance bow shield cavalry. as the cavalry chases the horse archers is breaks up their rotation tactic as well as picks some off with their own bows. As the battle develops into individual duals between mounted troops. the foot bow start to focus fire on nearest targets killing them outright or dropping their horses making them easy targets for mounted lance or bow fire.
Horse archers are “not” OP. You just have to used a combined arms strategy to defeat them.
Foot archers should be sent forward with the f4 command to basically find the range to the enemy. A enemy closes they will fall back through your infantry to shelter behind while continuing to do their missile barrage. if you leave them on F4, charging troops can push them against the battle zone line then kill them. Once you charge with your infantry also hit F3 to charge with your archers. they will fire and advance continuously till out of arrows the close for melee. As they get closer they be come much, much more accurate.
Good cavalry tactic is to have your cavalry follow you around behind the enemy. Make pass through the enemy archer line and slam into the rear of the enemy infantry line as they engage you infantry. Lancers can one shot troops from behind. If the infantry turn to face the mounted they expose their backs to your infantry. Now, do not try to pass through the infantry as your mounted can get hung up and pulled down. With them still following you, pull the out and make another pass through the enemy archer line. Reform and do the whole cycle again. Tip, DO NOT charge directly at archers! You are giving a perfect shot with no adjustment for deflection. Charge the archers at a 45 degree angle from a flank. ow they have to compensate for your angular speed. Massively increases the shot difficulty so they will hit far, far less.
Infantry tip. Mix spearmen with your swordsmen. Spear jam and kill horses charging your line. I try for 1/3 spear rest sword.

Also, pulling your horse archers and cavalry back to you in the middle of the fight then recharging gives you a charge on the nearest enemies instead of them all swirling around the battlefield. You can also hit 3 for mounted the f1 f2 for them to follow you so you can lead the to the point of the battlefield you want them to focus such as archers behind the main line.

Actually, it is not really that hard to deal with horse archers, in fact, I've found that the most useful way to deal with them is having two circle formations. That way you can have a thick layer of shields surrounding your archers who would skirmish from within the circle, only problem is that you have to deal with the enemy heavy cavalry as you cannot allow them to charge onto your formation.

  • @seanmac1793
    @seanmac1793 4 года назад

As for dealing with horse archers you need to anchor you defense around something where the horse archers can't get around you flank and harry you. Then you just need to keep up the arrow volleys because theoretically you should be able to shoot arrows faster than the people on the horses, not sure how this part holds up in game. Once the death ball is blunted you counter charge with your cav and they will out preform the horse archers in melee. This won't always work sense sometimes you want have the terrain that allows you do that and then my advice is roll over and play dead and hopefully they will leave.

    My stratagey requires
    1. Crunchy Infantry , bout 45%-55% of my forces.
    2. A shit ton of archers, 40%- 50% of my troops.
    3. Me being out numbered.
Step one. Set up a shield wall close to spawn about 2-3 men thick, on a hill if close by.
Step two. Archers wait for the emeny force to get a little closer than there maximum range then open fire.
Step three. Wait for them to hit my sheild wall and then send archers to flank the attack making an "L" formation.
Step four. First wave of the hostile force brakes, and I get fresh troops to spawn in right next to me to either add to the shield wall or the storm of arrows, while there fresh troops are still running at me from the other side of the map in a scattered formation.
The main thing you want to do is keep your troops in formation and not scatered like dust in the wind. And try to avoid attacking them at there spawn.

The ultimate tactics depend on who your opponent and what are your units and what is the terrain.
If their main army are cavalry archers and you have mostly infantry, you'll need trees or hill to break their pattern
You need to use skirmish button for your archer too. And if you go against heavy cavalry, thin line shield wall are bad

  • @stevensonbak
    @stevensonbak 4 года назад

I feel stupid for just realizing this, but arming your ranged units with bows instead of crossbows give you the advantage of hiding your ranged units behind your infantry line's shield wall.
Bowmen can shoot over the safety of the shield wall when the enemy is initially approaching, while the crossbowman simply can't do this due to the flatter trajectory of their projectiles.
If you do still opt for arming the majority of your men with crossbows (a valid choice since they are great at killing most enemies regardless of their health points or armor value), you should place them in FRONT of the infantry line and just order your infantry to charge when the enemy gets close.

you can do the same with enemy horse archers, i've run into a fair few armies with 60+ horse archers, what generally works is splitting the cavalry into 2 units(i generally have a 20-30 man melee cavalry) leaving 1 half to its sergeant, and the other half follows me. Kiting around the archers makes them bunch up and you can whittle down on their numbers with a swing-able pole arm and your men will follow taking out those that split off behind you, horse archers are great against everything but cavalry from my experience, the AI cant seem to predict shots well enough so they miss most of their shots, and they will keep swapping from melee to archery, losing time to attack. also if you run around them counter clockwise, since all of the archers are right handed, you're constantly in that blind spot to their arrows on their right side. If anyone has something they could add to this i'd definitely take some constructive criticism. why not make it better?

    Hey guys.
I just wanted to say that without exploiting things like this, a great way to minimize death of your charging infantry, have them spread out. now, i understand you want them stacked but as they inch closer to the front of the line, what you can do is have them in a triangular formation which is basically a shield wall breaker and so your forces now pushes on both side of the line.
this is how it was done in ancient times and it will not be different here.
this is also why having your units selected through 1-2-3 (infantry-archer-cavalry) isn't enough. you need subdivision of specialized units.
a very small group of imperial legionary (6-7) will quite readily break through a weak shield wall and that is on you to find the weak spots.
(the AI currently clumps upgraded unit on the side?)
so basically they are rushing in a loose formation but as they inch closer, they regain their shield wall and a small specialized unit is sent in a triangular formation where it is weakest (or in the middle) to overwhelm the enemy faster through encircling it.
that's also why you want a number of your units to respond to different number (1 through 9) so you can tactically send them through and behind.
    try it out.
    thank me later.
fun fact: the first cavalry charge generally was a small skirmish to see where fought back, where was the thickest of the thick and they threw spear-like stick with flags on top, indicating where to focus the energy to the ensuing charge, each adding new flags, of different colour, to help the troops coming into the fray navigate.

They need to change the Ai’s priority in battles. The infantry should focus on engaging infantry. Granted, they shouldn’t ignore cavalry. I’d say that infantry should focus on engaging infantry. Spearman should focus cavalrymen and the horses specifically, whilst staying with the infantry. Over all Formation would be infantry advancing on infantry while spearman stick near the edges ready to stop the cavalrymen if they get too close. As for the strength of horse archers? Probably should lower their armor or increase the riding penalty for the bow.

with no exploits i managed to earn lots of gold, which led me to have very high tier units, i prioritize on ranged and footmen, then i use the classical aproach of having the ranged units in a higher ground and a line of footmen in front of them, not really that close, cavarly to the sides, and that creates a hole in the middle, where cavarly usually get stock, but fisrtly i provoke them by killing some archers or footmen, then they will charge and by the time they footsoliders arrive their cavarly is mostly gone, the the ranged units start to kill lots of them, what is left usually got killed by the line of infantry. Meanwhile i personally play as a horse archer with a shield and a couchable spear, it is very effective and i can kill very easily their top tier cav, and infantry, the only problem is that if i get down of the horse i'm done instantly, anyway, with this strategy and with and army of 250 men, i can defeat an army of 500-600 with acceptable losses (from 30 to 60 men)

the sad part is even with all these details, you could hire 50 khuzait horse archers and with one command beat any army of any scale

    Best tactics:
    1. Have nothing but horse archers
    2. Press 4
    3. F6
    4. Proceed to destroy entire army with a party of 100

I've clocked in almost 200h in this since launch - it's like meth! :)) One strat I like a lot is having about 66%Heavy cav archers (Bucelarii) and the rest Heavy cav (Cataphracts). I open up with sending the cav archers to skirmish with F6 and then wait for the right moment to charge the heavy cav in and clean up. One problem I've seen a lot with advance (F1-F4) for archers is that they may get stuck in this back and forth movement and not shoot. I'd rather either move them to fixed positions or having them charge. From what I saw on charge they shoot and move closer and closer. They will eventually move in to meelee but they will shoot a lot by the time they get there.

Take your khurzite horse archers and pit them against an even number of Vlandian sharpshooters, or Bitannian fian champions. You can kiss those horses goodbye.

If you are gonna use horse archers, you can already go 100% horse archers.
I played with an army of around 100 Khan's guards and I could destroy any army, any size with as little as 0 casualties.
    How?
Just keep moving back and shooting them (kiting).
When you are close to the edge of the map, run to a different side of the map and rinse and repeat.
When you run out of arrows, retreat and restart the battle.
If you do it properly you can destroy any army in the game (even 1000) without taking a single casualty.

i just place my 50 archers in front of my shield wall. that takes a ton of the enemy out before they hit me with anything. once they are within javelin range, then i charge my shield wall and cav. kills the enemy every time. my 100 men end up fighting up to 300 enemy.

Send the horses out infantry wait, bows to the side for more hits, when more and more enemies scatter charge everyone

Yeah cheese infantry is a no go for me. Idk, if you feel accomplished by something like that, then go for it I guess.
To nerf horse archers and super athletics, there should be stamina system for both infantry and horsemen. Viking Conquest had barebones stamina on foot and there was potential. Also on athletics, there should be lower cap on max speed on foot, so that later levels let you achieve the same speed with heavier equip load but no godlike dashing all battle when in light armor.

@Arda I get you, It was so janky in VC but I always played with it. Could be pretty good if polished.

Yeah I have always though stamina should be added like defending a siege for 2 hrs cutting down enemy without getting tired in any way just does not ring true and same goes for horses they to should have stamina so fingers crossed the modding community will fix that for us. I also liked how weapons deteriorated and broke in VC as well as getting injured and needing to see a physician.

@@benjaminclement8437 Oh yeah, absolutely. Injuries were great and I really miss camping overnight. Weapon deterioration was pretty fun when rabble with shitty spears, pitchforks and clubs broke their weapons quickly or like when in the long af ending battle I could see standard bearers who lost their standards. With Bannerlord mechanics they could now pick up weapon from the ground and fight on.
