Today we’re going to make an ice effect for Marvel Legends Iceman, who is a bit of a boring figure to me because he didn’t come with any accessories or interchangeable parts.
The materials you’ll need for this project are:
Low temperature glue gun
-Glue sticks. I use all purpose sticks so I can use them in both my regular and low temperature glue guns: amzn.to/2p5ySVI (Amazon affiliate link)
Ruler: amzn.to/2kPHexg (Amazon affiliate link)
Pencil
Disposable fork, such as the ones from fast food restaurants
-Parchment Paper: amzn.to/2qk056v (Amazon affiliate link)
Please note, that parchment paper and wax paper are two completely different materials. If you use wax paper on this project, you’re going to fail.
Then some optional materials are painting supplies and acrylic craft paint and gloss varnish. For the paint, I’ll be using apple barrel brand blue cotton.
We’re going to start off by rolling a small piece of parchment paper into a tight cone shape. Hold your cone and with your other hand mark off the edge of the cone about 5 cm from the small tip. That will give us an idea on where we need to apply the glue.
I recommend doing a ring all around the base of the cone with the hot glue and letting that dry a bit before moving on. That will help keep the flap of your parchment paper down. Then I just apply more lines of glue working my way towards my pencil line. When I approach the pencil line, I put down a decent size blob of glue and then use the tines of the plastic fork to drag the edges of the glue to fan it out. I work in a small section at a time because one of the drawbacks of low temperature glue guns is the glue sets much faster so you have much less time to work with it.
Make a second cone out of the parchment paper and mark of 4 cm from the tip. Wrap the paper around the first cone and keep it tight at the base. Then flare out the opposite end. Apply the hot glue using the exact same process as before.
Make a third cone by wrapping the paper around the second cone tightly at the tip and flare out the opposite end. Mark 3 cm from the tip and cover with glue as before.
Now you can glue your three cones together, but I like to keep them separate for more options. Mine fit tight enough that the friction holds them together, but if yours are looser you can stick them together with a bit of poster mounting wall putty.
I think this effect looks the most like ice when it is unpainted, but Iceman is so blue it makes a stark contrast between the two. I’m going to apply a small bit of paint to the interior of my cones using the blue cotton shade. The paint will be thickest at the base and then I’m going to drag it towards the ends so that the paint will taper out and we’ll have a nice gradual transition. I want to leave the ends of my effect unpainted.
After I’ve painted, I’m going to seal everything with some glossy varnish.
After the sealant is dry, you can stick them to Iceman with a bit of poster wall putty or just jam the effect on one of his fingers. I’ve used both methods in my photos, but you have to be fast to take a picture with the poster putty method.

This is great. I have a diamond select IceMan statue, and being clumsy as I am I broke all of his fingers off. Granted It is an extremely fragile piece. But after reviewing this I believe I can salvage it and make him a displayable piece once again. Thank you for this content, it’s a great idea for effects or in my case a necessary fix.

I'll let you in on a secret. It takes me multiple attempts to get my crafts to look halfway decent, so don't give up and keep trying and it will get easier. :-)
I find it funny that Hasbro gives us accessories for characters who don't need it like the Abomination wave Cap with the shield throwing effect. While they don't give us effect accessories for characters who do need it. Hasbro's doing a great job with their figures for effect accessories. But if they don't have any for characters who need them, I can always count on you Zub!
Agreed. I really don't get the logic of how Hasbro decides who comes with accessories. Iceman and especially Blizzard are pretty bare bones figures.

I’ve had requests for other ice related effects including:
1. Ice Slide: I really want one of these myself, and I’ve been working on a design. If it works and looks halfway decent, I’ll be sure to share.
2. Ice Weapons: I’ve had a couple of requests for weapons Iceman has created out of ice, but I’m having trouble tracking down comic panels showing Iceman using weapons to help me as reference art, so if this is something you’d like to see, I'll need links or specific comic info so I can look up the artwork.

Zubbie I would say that if you need inspiration for ice weapons I would check out the young justice cartoon or any other superhero cartoon show with an ice-man type character since they can sometimes get creative with those powers

Taha Shujaat That's an idea, but I'd rather find some comic artwork to start from. You would not believe the rants I had to deal with from people on my Ghost Rider Chain video about how I "obviously" don't read comics and how Johnny Blaze doesn't use a chain even though that video has several panels I pulled directly from comics showing modern Johnny swinging a chain around. A few people were nice about their opinions, but some were so mean I just deleted them before I finished reading. So I want to minimize the chance of having to deal with that again by finding some Marvel comics ice weapon source material to start with.
Rago14 I've been thinking about that, but do you have any ideas on what to do about his hands so it doesn't look like he's wearing spider gloves in his civilian outfit? I need to learn how to make hands.

I've definitely stapled my finger. And I've even been shot with a staple gun. Ahhh, childhood. Also I think Iceman was always omega level, but no one really knew that until Emma Frost stole his body or whatever for a stint in the 90s and showed everyone how insane his powers could get. I don't think he always had great control over them.

Staple gun? Now that would hurt! You have no idea how relieved I am to hear I'm not the only one who stapled my finger as a kid. I wanted a stapler of my own so bad, and when I finally got it, I hurt myself. haha
haha! I definitely did it as a kid a fair bit. even stapling my paper bag lunch. I definitely did it at an office job I had a few years ago, too. I was rightfully laughed at by all of my colleagues in the marketing department.

I'm not sure if you've seen it, but my second Christmas video with Spider-Man 2099 also has a web line garland that I've used before to wrap around action figures before. I have stapled my finger. Also I find that a good ice blast for the marvel legends Iceman is to take a base from a young justice aqualad figure that has water spewing out from a tank so I cut the tank part of it off so now I have a pretty decent looking ice blast.

Interesting! You're probably right about the lighting though. I took some more photos of Iceman in front of a white background that I didn't use for this video and he looks even more blueish.
