I love Dorney Park and the memories that were made there. Used to park by the lake in the shade of the trees and have lunch there then walk the park with my parents and younger brothers until closing time. I think those golden years lasted a decade until 1975 but the park in that era was in the classic mold of old time amusement parks.
I loved this ride and it was always on my “do not miss” list. But i also dreaded riding it, because, the ride being so old, i figured it was time for the cables to snap, sending me flying off the end. The cables you see going around the turntables are the only point all the cars are attached to the ride. When you are on the ride you can sense how loose those cables really are.
The Whip is the only ride I really went on at Dorney (unless they had a log flume as I would have gone on that too). I remember the day I found The Whip! While my pals were off riding “The Fast Rides” or those that required you to be at least 48” tall (which I was) I went off on my own (ostracized) walking around the park. That was until I found The Whip !! I was lucky the line wasn’t long as I was starting to get anxiety thinking it might be too fast.!??! I absolutely loved it! Just enough of a thrill for me (🤓) I would end up riding The Whip like 10 plus times. Which I absolutely paid for, having given myself some degree of Whiplash yet also toned my legs !! This did not deter me from going back on it. The Whip was my go to ride anytime I found myself at Dorney. Viva La Fouet !!
Love it! There aren’t many of these left so I always ride them when I can. There’s a mini outdoor one at Kennywood, and there’s a great (really whippy!) indoor one at Rye Playland. Which others are out there still?
I’m sure I must have ridden it, but I can’t visualize it from memory - where is the one at Knoebels? EDIT: Never mind - I just watched a video. Thanks, youtube!
Why does this look like something you can make yourself in your own driveway or garage out of those things you had in gym class and everyone got a finger run over at some point, and a chain garage door opener?
There were Whip ride trucks going through the Philly neighborhoods when I was a kid, oh man did we love that every Summer!
Whip is classic never ages

Those turns have got to give some good laterals
Fun fact: Blackpool Pleasure Beach was once home to one of these, as well as a kiddy version called the “junior whip”!

They're so much fun. Knoebels has one too. Pennsylvania is the place to ride Whips!
