Gas-Powered Hand Drill [DiRestoration]

  • Jimmy Diresta sent me this tiny gas-powered hand drill made by Ohlsson and Rice for restoration. It was originally used to tap maple trees for syrup and was called the Drillgine. I believe it's from the 60s or 70s.
    I decided that I didn't want to do an "as new" restoration and wanted to make the drill look like it was one of his tools that he painted white and used every day.
    The drill needed its points cleaned, a new carburetor diaphragm, and a new recoil assembly.
    The small 22 cc (video says 2cc) engine produces 0.85HP. The carburetor design, in my opinion, is horrible, as the small carburetor parts have a tendency to move around under the diaphragm, causing damage. I believe one of these parts is damaged beyond repair and a new carburetor is VERY difficult to find. Until I find and replace the carburetor, the drill currently runs with less power and for short periods of time. Mucho sadness.
    From what I have read, this is a common problem, and part of the reason these tools were never successful.
    I thank Jimmy immensely for sending me this super cool and unique tool. I really appreciate it. I plan on returning the favour...
    If someone has the parts I need, I would gladly purchase them off you.

    I want to thank you so much for providing such excellent content. My RUclips algorithm suggested this channel to me and boy was it dead on! No annoying music, no commentary, subtle humor and therapeutic disassembly and reassembly of vintage and antique tools. Doesn't get any better than that, honestly.

    Wow. Where did we lose our way and go from being Producers of amazing tools like this to being Buyers of whatever passes for a Tool nowadays? 60s or 70s, I was a teen in the 70s. Everything did seem a lot more 'metallic and durable' back in those days. Thanks for doing these videos, Doc. You add years to the life of everyone who views and appreciates what you are doing.

      It's a nice restoration but it's easy to see why this concept didn't catch on: it can't be used in a confined space due to CO and the vibrations prevent it from drilling concentric circles (look at the runout when he drills a test piece).

    • @sethbracken
      @sethbracken 7 лет назад +81

      Andrew Suderman console yourself with this thought: by "making it look like crap" he's taken one more gas powered drill out of the pristine antiques marketplace. This drives up the value of your own collection of mint condition gas powered drills. If it's over 200 years old fetishizing original paint is a great idea. If it's consumer tools from 40 years ago, not so much.

    • @drupy1992
      @drupy1992 7 лет назад +31

    Nice one. But how come you stopped disassembling everything? No piston/con-rod/crankshaft/head/exhaust/intake cleaning? And that chuck needs something.. is a little wobbly. The arbor is bent, or the jaws are misaligned, or something. And no inspection on the gearbox.. must have some gritty shmoo in there.

    I saw one like this new (in the UK) in my local tractor dealer in 1994. Priced £175.00 and wanted it then. Nice job.
    Thanks

    Great job! You def *"DIRESTA'ed"* it.
    For all the people asking, "Why didn't you leave it yellow?" Jimmy paints all his tools white. This is Jimmy's drill, so it's painted white. (That should explain the *"DIRESTA"* too.)

    That was a neat old tool before the "restoration". A little on the amateur side with the crude mechanic work and wood chisel paint scraping if you ask me. Not sure what the ultrasonic carb cleaning was about since the thing was only about 50% disassembled when it went in whatever that watery lookin bath was. Would like to have saved it myself. Guess that's just my thoughts on it. Kinda wish I hadn't watched now :(

    It was cool and fun video but stripping the original yellow paint and painting it white was something I would not do.
    Another thing was the overspray at end was something I did not like where black paint got on the cap and fuel tank.

      John Marston - DO YOU NEED TO COPY PASTE YOUR ALL CAPS BULLSHIT EVERYWHERE? The description says that the idiot wanted to not do a restoration, but try to make it look like some boyfriend idol had owned and used it. Irrespective of the description, this tool is fucked now, and that is a pity.

    Why didn't you change grease in the gearbox?
    Why did you repainted it?
    And why did you remove the original lable and painted this diresta shit?

    • @theolschoolblues

      1. He doesn't need your validation
      2. Im sure off camera he oiled it
      3. Maybe Jimmy didn't want it repainted.
      4. You don't own it, so he can put Diresta on whatever the fuck he wants.
      5. Please just leave the internet.

      1. I do not need you fucking opinion either.
      2. I am sure that you do not know it at all.
      3. If he did not want it repainted, why it WAS repainted?
      4. If you put something not original on a restored item - this is not a restoration!
      5. After you, sucker!

    • @merijn1254
      @merijn1254 7 лет назад

      dfgggfg correction, if you replace something with something aftermarket, why wouldn't it be a restoration, if you repair the thing with it, why not? That it isn't original, doesn't mean it ruines the thing.

    • @dfgggfg
      @dfgggfg 7 лет назад +8

      I meant that the restoration means "to make thing look like it was long ago". If the sculptor, who wants to make a restoration of a old-time statue, like Venus, for example, and adds an Iphone to her hands, and makes her a punk-like girl - this is not a restoration)) The same thing is here - the drill looks not like it was before.

    Hum... liked to see the tool working again, but as many, the sloppy paint job and logo overspray was a hard thing to watch. I know Jimmy paint his new tools white, so nobody would steal them, or at least this is why he started it, but still was awfull to see. At least if the job was well done, i'd say okay this time for special reasons. Would have made the box to match to help forget the ''crime'' :)

    • @macey75

Oh, sorry Dewalt, if you don't give me $$$ I will paint over your name!!! It's fucking pathetic and cuntish.

    I can't believe it. I never thought I'd ever see a gas powered drill. Then again, I guess we've always needed cordless drills. I'll stick to my Ryobi one+ tools, but wow. Never thought I'd see this. Now that I'm on this video, I see ads for gas powered drills on Home Depot.
