Love these small desktop practice amps? If you do - here’s a whole playlist of them!

I've heard great things about the Katana but I love the sound and aesthetic of the Yamaha. I can keep it in the living room and keep things classy

Yamaha's crunchy tones sounded to me just like the record from the 70s. Amazing! And I like the reverb better on Yamaha.

I like 12’s but those Yamaha are great for practice, I’d have to each in its place. Boss in the jam room, Yamaha on the desk, living room, bedroom etc.

That’s exactly the way I feel about them too. Spark is closer to the THR than the Katana

Which amp sounds *best at low volume…* and more importantly what amp can be *used without a PC* as I don’t use a PC these days?

  • @mkrj2576

Hey - your stuff is always fun, thanks! I own both the Kat and the THR and can weigh in as someone who practices at home a lot and plays with a band. Got both the Kat 50 and the Artist 100, and the THR 5 and had the THR 30. So here's what I've found... For a true "desktop" or "bedroom" amp the THR kills it. The key is its "high fidelity" at low volume. Seems this amp was made to do. Its why I sent the THR 30 back... the THR 5 is more than loud enough for desktop use. I rarely play it louder than having the volume at noon. Price-wise the THR 5 is a way better deal than the 10 or 30 for, again, desktop use. If you want to jam with others or play with a band the THR has a hard time with its limited low end. The Kat 50 is probably one of the best or the "full use" practice amps out there for the price. Unlike the THR however it does not sound all that great at true "desktop" volumes. I think a 12" speak needs more volume to bring out the highs. (The Kat 50 vs the Artist 100 - the Artist is way better if you are really playing with a band - its a different animal, but that's getting off topic). Both the THR and the Kat 50 are both great practice amps but IMO have very different strong points. Now for an extra... the best "desktop/bedroom" practice amp I've found... the Joyo DC-15s. It has the high fidelity at low volumes of the THR, cost less, has a built in looper, basic drum machine, and foot switchable presets. Not sure if it will have Yamaha's quality/longevity, and while totally superficial, I dig the look of the THR's "glow" when practicing with the lights down low. Thanks again.

I love the glow too! I’ll have to check out the Joyo! Thanks for the kind words and great insight!

It’s hard to gauge when he plays different licks… would be better if he did only a 5-10sec lick on each amp so you can get a better comparison. I mean they both sound great but for me it’s whatever amp can operate without a PC the best at low volumes. I just started playing again after 20yrs and bought a Roland Micro Cube gx to go with my Epiphone LP Special ii and it’s pretty sweet for a bedroom jam session being such a little amp. Just wish I could control the mids and it would be the perfect amp!!! I love how it has my favorite 3-main amps with VOX, Marshall and Mesa Boogie!! Just got it yesterday so I’ve only jammed on it twice for about 4.5/hrs total. So I’m still learning how to tune my ear. I was never really good as a teen in 1996 I mostly noodled. But I got most of the Santeria solo down by Sublime. RUclips has made playing so much more enjoyable tbh!!! I learn something new everytime I play now 🎸🤘

mmm... sorry for my ignorance. Recording the sound of the yamaha thr10II directly with usb should supposed to have the same sound of the thr30 watt recorded version?
The sound that come through the speakers make the heard difference, right?

The Katana seems to have more mids, but the THR high gain patches sound a bit better in this video. Although, you can definitely get the same equivalent from a Katana with a lot of editor digging.

Boss is clearly the louder amp . I have the 100 MK2 and it super loud. It has a 0.5 W setting and that is what I use at home. I think Boss is the amp if you have the room for it. Yamaha if you like how small and easy to carry it is. With the clean tones to slightly overdriven the Boss tone is best. Where it seems less clear is high gain tones. I am not into metal and high gain so really I am not the best to judge that. Really this is an apples to oranges comparison. Maybe next time throw in a banana.

The Katana wins with a much more body to the sound, but so it should
with a much larger cabinet and speaker.
The Yamaha is to bright and thin sounding too my ears.
I have the katana 100 MKii mainly for the extra connections over the 50,
and find most small practice amps lacking due to their small speakers.
The Spark is just a boombox no matter how you much you try to tame the bass.

  • @AngelMartinez-qs3cf
    @AngelMartinez-qs3cf 2 года назад

Hi again, I got the Boss Katana MKII 100 and the Yamaha THR30II, and I gotta say both amps are awesome. I went with the Katana 100 because you store more presets (8), has an FX Loop, better speak, as opposed to 4 on the Katana 50. On the Yamaha THR30II, the clean tones with Chorus are great, played some Come As You Are, and Run To You and the Chorus is great. I think Yamaha amp will be my clean sound. For the overdrive crunch sound, Katana has my vote! Thank you.

All the comparisons I've watched seem unfavoured to the THR, but I still bought one and it sound so much better in my room than in any review. It's a great amp and more portable than the Katana, it has a 4 hour hour battery included - major feature.

I dont even beed to watch this. I just came from this dumb article and had to tell someone.
They mention the great tones in The THR but they give advantage to BOSS cos it has more effects and for the speaker since it has 12" speaker.
Thats bullshit. If tone is whats most important and you can add your effects to it, Yamaha is much better. They must be getting paid by BOSS. Since when do we pick an amp over another cos it has more effects? Especially when one has a much better sound.
and the speaker size crap is ridiulous. the Yamaha has these 3 inch speakers but for a practice amp it cranks. Worries bass? Go watch the demo of the THR10X version by Keith Merrow. He has the bass almost all the way down! Ive played the BOSS. I play metal fyi but the BOSS sucked to me. If you want a high gain sound get the THR10X. If youre mkre inkine with what fhis dudes playing, get this one here
