My vocal coach in China always wanted to me to sing dark and heavy, because I have a very bright, thin voice. And this is very common training among many Chinese singers over decades...Now I'm gonna explore how to sing more naturally. Thanks Freya! I really enjoy every episode of your videos.

Very much correct!!! Golden age opera singers weren’t ‘covering’ their sound. Exceptions - to make a dramatic/emotional color. ❤ Plus, the right opera singing differs from other styles just in how low your larynx can go. It sits way lower in most of the range. At least how I feel. Of course without any strain. I’m not speaking about modern opera training, which is a bit off.
P.s. I’m here to search for mixed middle range and belting to incorporate into my classically trained voice. Feeling a bit desperate. Can’t connect properly head with chest. So my mid range is kinda weak? 🥲 You explain way more detailed than any other channel on RUclips.

Congratulations, great video ! And as a tenor I have to tell you it works exactly the same way, the great Alfredo Kraus always said how the voice has to be lifted and clear, although so many singers, unfortunately, try and darken their voices and even teach that as teachers.

Starting as mezzo, with your help, I am reaching up to soprano level and hitting the high notes and higher ones as time moves on. You make so much sense and lay down the rules and advice so clearly, that (and this is MY own opinion) any singer who is determined to improve, will do so by following your channel. I am a true advocate of your methods. As usual, many many thanks. My regards.

I am learning to sing opera, and I'm also a soprano. Your tips help so much, and I love how you explain them in a more simple way than other people sometimes do. It makes it a lot easier to understand what I'm doing right and wrong.
I am trying to sing Skyfall by Vitas (I highly recommend listening, even though he's male he sings _very_ high. However, he tends to darken his tone somewhat), and while I can reach the notes with much ease, I tend to sound whiny and my vowels aren't so good, but your tips are amazing.
Thank you, Freya!!! I love your voice ♡

Thanks for making that awful concept word "covering" finally crystal clear to me. Nothing I have ever heard anyone say before mentioned how it was done with the lips over the teeth like hiding the teeth and closing the opening - giving the effect of distorted and darkened vowels. But I think, correct me if'm wrong, that its still useful to do that if you are trying to navigate the passagio.

Freya, I've been a opera fan for almost 50 years and the standards of modern operatic singing is much lower now. Tell me what you think please. It seems that modern opera singers are lazier or had quite bad training. Conductors are definitely part of the issue.

I personally believe that in our world we crave things much faster than in previous time periods. Before hand you might take years upon years honing your craft now it's minimum training and expecting the best result.

Have you heard of Jackie Evancho? She is a young soprano opera singer and very popular. Look her up and once you hear her, I bet you won't be able to stand her. Like you said, darkening vowels artificially is one of your biggest pet peaves, your ears will probably bleed once you hear Jackie. She is seriously the WORST at darkening vowels, you can notice it so easily because of how deep she was trained to sing. It's awful. Thank you for your tips on telling us that it's a bad habit you don't want to get into!

I agree about Jackie's "opera" singing voice. It's fake. However, I do like her natural voice that is evident in the more "pop" oriented songs she has been singing the past couple of years. Try a listen to her "Apocalypse" for an example.

As a general rule , the Opera and Operetta are created at the 1st origin for latin Italian language ,latin singers who have a totally different body frequencies. English Sounds can't even get any abilities for opera/operettas,but never.
The Pop Music, Country Music, Blue Grass ,rock & more are created only but only for Native English Language that has totally different & unique sounds in it , therefore English native singers can have better abilities for pop, rock country, blue grass sounds. Therefore latin people never can sound like English people and English people will never sound like latin people , at no matter what because of body frequencies that can never never even be faked.
