Actual M50 owner here. I have had multiple BMWs (and mercedes) cars before this one. Including another M Performance model. For now, it is the best BMW I have owned. The range with the 19inch wheels is acceptable (450km mixed). The performance is blistering right up to the top speed. Weight is there, but corners very good - up to 1g. "Built quality is very good"? You can live with hard plastic lower door cars, no carpeting in there, hard and high (and little space) center console, plenty of gloss black mixed with grey-black buttons, ..? Good informative video. I have two comments you have 20“ tires with an EPA rating of 225miles, the M50 with 19“ tires has a EPA rating of 270miles. Also this platform was designed from the ground up to be ICE, hybrid and fully electric. This way BMW can pump out many different cars at a fraction of the development costs. Also the factory can run 4 series and i4 on the same line giving BMW the flexibility to adjust to demand. New i5 and i7 use the same platform.
I think the platform may offer some flexibility, but makes for a car that is far too compromised and there is no evidence that there are any cost savings looking at the almost complete lack of integration. 2300KG is a huge weight and I suspect at Autobahn speeds it’s range will be sub 150 miles. The only reason I can see for buying one is if local legislators have made petrol / diesel cars unviable through taxes. With what seems like a complete lack of value engineering, I even wonder if it is actually profitable.
Agree this color looks really great. Also having seen an i4 IRL recently the grille appears less obscene than in photos. Have to keep in mind that BMW always try to get an aggressive look, so now we have the aggressive hamster. What's really disappointing though is the tiny screen - very impractical for displaying a map. Also no space for putting your smartphones. BMW are masters at over engineering complexity so that you have to keep coming back for repairs. The whole idea of EV, simplicity, conflicts with their decades long Engineering philosophies.

I really like that BMW have respect for the consumer's right to repair (car workshops can order every part and component of this car, as was said to me). Also I like this car is a premium car, not an utilitarian one at a premium price.
This BMW seems to be a stop gap, like a converted ICE to EV, and I am looking forward to new pure EV BMW platform. I still don't understand the BMW management who had a great earlier start in 2012 with the Electronaut concept such as the BMW 1 Series ActiveE with a regular BMW body shape, and also the less conventional hybrid BMW i3 using carbon fiber body and 2-cylinder motorcycle engine.

The routing of the hoses under the hood is really something the customers couldnt care less about. And i believe bmw customers dont care about a frunk either. Us bmw ppl is buying the car for the driving experience first. Cargo space is really not a priority!

It looks similar to the iX, which is on a dedicated EV platform. The i4 is still one of the best EV's on the market in every way. And the absolute best sedan together with the Taycan.

@@tvanbroekhoven Seems like a pretty nice car. It definitely should feel very solid given its moderate size yet very high weight. It must be intentional given how many weight saving techniques they used on the i3.
Under the hood I could already see two hoses with a strange path. You can clearly see them at the 20:20 mark in the video. One hose made a S-shape bend from left to right... But it was a straight 10-12" horizontal connection so by using a straight hose they could have made a clean shorter line. The second pipe or hose started in the middle of the radiator at a metal tube oriented to the left, going to the back before going back to the front and right. So by using a start connection pointing to the right they could have saved again at least 20-30" of tubing... Some strange designs under that hood
Is there a reason they make those tubes in the front so squiggly and longer than necessary? Those two tubes closest to the front for example, could be half as long as they are if the just went direct from point to point. Shorter, cheaper, neater...
@@rogerstarkey5390 That's my first thought, but I don't want to believe they abandoned the frunk on a low production vehicle, in order to use some old tubing. Whole parts like Shocks, aircon, filters, etc I can understand.... but tubing?

@@computercrack I've considered that. But Flex within an engine bay or heat expansion doesn't explain the extreme length and arrangement of the tubes. Look at the front tube, it exists a tank at the front center of the trunk, and goes to the left, it does a full circuit around the tank to join a junction on the right of the tank. And why would anyone care? Because it would be easier to work on, and if the car goes in to mas production those cents start to matter, importantly it would also reduce weight since you have less tubing and less fluid inside the tubes, and also, it would make space for at least a small frunk, maybe enough space to a carry on bag which would increase sales.
As a former BMW owner (3 generations of M3, M5, 335, and i3s), this and all current BMW EVs are a GREAT disappointment. It’s like they forgot everything that was good about the i3 and gave up on innovation and shoehorned a battery and motors into an ICE chassis. 5000 lbs! Seriously?! Lazy lazy lazy. I wouldn't blame the engineers for this. The engineers are brilliant, and would make the impossible possible if given the chance, but the suits at the top really F**ked up when they decided to go for the CLAR-platform rather than building on the momentum they had with the i3 and i8. Now they're playing catch up rather than leading the field as they would be if they made some smarter decisions earlier.
@@BjrnRuthberg actually it's very smart of a rather low volume car company to be able to build ice, phev and EV on one production line, sharing a lot of components. Built quality is very good without any flaws. For now, I am pretty happy with it, regardless of the sauerkraut with sausage architecture under the bonnet. Let's see what the future brings.

Then taking off that M-cover under the bonnet I got the same feeling when I opened my first DVD player.

That's not strange. It's for the line to be able to flex without putting strain on the joints and these lines are Cent articles.

The squiggly tubes are bong attachments.
