CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON ARRESTED IN GREENLAND

- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2024
- On the morning of Sunday, July 21, Captain Paul Watson was arrested in Nuuk, Greenland by Danish federal police, who boarded the M/Y John Paul DeJoria as soon as it docked.
The crew had stopped to refuel while en route to the Northwest Passage as part of #OpKangeiMaru, our campaign aimed at intercepting Japan’s newly-built factory ship, the Kangei Maru, in the North Pacific.
It is believed that this arrest is connected to a previous Red Notice issued for Watson’s anti-whaling activities in the Antarctic. This development comes as a surprise since the Foundation’s lawyers had reported that the Red Notice had been withdrawn. However, it appears that Japan had made the notice confidential to facilitate Paul’s travel for the purpose of making an arrest.
Although Japan has operated in violation of the ICJ ruling for several years, they ceased Antarctic high-seas whaling in 2016 and now only hunt whales within their territorial waters. CPWF suspects that Japan intends to resume high-seas whaling in the Southern Ocean and North Pacific by 2025, and believes the reactivation of the Red Notice against Captain Watson is politically motivated, coinciding with the launch of the new factory ship.
Paul is currently in custody, and it is unclear if Denmark will extradite him to Japan.
We need Paul released immediately! We urge the Danish government to release Paul and reject this politically motivated request.

First, Japan broke the law created by the International Whaling Commission, of where, when and how many whales can be taken.
These laws were not enforced, that's why Paul took the matter in his hand.

Paul Watson would absolutely not get a fair trial in Japan therefore we need to pressure Danish police to not extradite him
One can only hope that due to a suspicion of revenge on the part of the Japanese fishermen crew and their bosses, Mr. Captain Watson will not be extradited. I use the word revenge because yes, it is true that Sea Shepherd and now also the new organization have annoyed the Japanese but the fishermen have also put the lives of the activists at risk several times, so Mr Watson could risk a long trial or an unjust sentence , precisely for the reason of getting the accused out of the way.

In the 30 years since 1980, the number of penguins in Antarctica has halved. This is due to a failure to adjust the numbers of minke whales, which are not endangered.
The recovery of the blue whale population, which really needs protection, has also been extremely slow.
This is the result of a sharp increase in the number of minke whales taking food from penguins and blue whales.
It is important to remember that indiscriminate protection is having a negative impact on the Antarctic ecosystem.

Do the Greenland authorities understand that Japan's whaling was breaking the law? What ridiculous legal footing that is for wanting Watson. An illegal act cannot serve as the pretext for punishing someone else. It's not illegal to document and stop crime from happening. An absurd notion that will never pass muster in the international court.
A real offensive legal effort against Japan can catapult the oceans into the spotlight and the last, worst thing we can do is ignore it. Greenland should be very careful what it does next. There's no way the world will stand for him being a political prisoner in Japan. This isn't the 1970s anymore either, Japan. This is an invalid arrest, and Watson's case will be a winner in court if that's where it must go. We can't let Paul Watson martyr himself without taking advantage of this golden opportunity to fight one more major battle for the whales, and win yet again. Paul Watson kicks the door down... we better have some powerful people to use that gateway he opened and change the world. Paul Watson is leading by example. Saving the oceans and by extension ourselves is a prescient, logical, and arguably critical mission. It's a noble goal too, in a world quite short on noble goals incidentally.

Senseless protection in Antarctica has led to a halving of the penguin population in the 30 years since 1980.
This is due to a lack of food in the quantities needed to sustain the penguin population due to a rapid increase in the number of minke whales.
''From an article described in National Geographic in April 2011''.
also due to the increase in minke whales that the blue whale population, which really needs protection, has not recovered

Contact your own nations had of state department or equivalent to pressure them to also help secure the release.
🐳 Tell us more about the charges and how it came about?
In April 2010 the Japanese Coast Guard obtained an arrest warrant for Watson "...on suspicion of ordering sabotage activities against Japan's whaling fleet",and Interpol has listed him as wanted at the request of Japan. The red notice has the charges issued by Japan as, "Breaking into the Vessel, Damage to Property, Forcible Obstruction of Business, Injury". His arrest was announced by a previous organization Captain Watson was involved in at the time when the Red Notice was issued . The organization criticizes this decision, arguing that "after having been posted online for years, the notice had recently disappeared from the Interpol website, leading Paul Watson and his lawyers to believe that he was now free of his movements”.
Further it seems Japan made the newly obtained Red Notice in March confidential ie hidden to coincide with the launching of the new whale hunter mother ship Kangei Maru knowingly knowing Captain Watson would captain the new organization flag ship. The capture of Captain Watson in the eyes of Japan especially if brought to Japanese soil would be valuable to the assumed prevention of counter whaling operations by Captain Paul Watson Foundation. Only problem with that is will only harden the crews will to defend the whales even more.
