You're welcome. I'm so glad to have finally done it. This is a great gambeson and I am actually wearing it again after having tried two other modern HEMA jackets.

I can't help but notice that the person you're sparring has the flag of Taiwan patched to his gambeson...
OMG! THAT'S THE CHANG KAI SHEK MEMORIAL HALL!!!
HEMA is a thing in Taiwan?? That's a dream come true!

Good review, can i ask, is 5 layers accurately correct? That seems a little too thin, should it not be at least 15 layers?

Awesome amount of information! Thanks!! Just wanted to ask do you think 3 layers are ok for HEMA, if the jacket overlaps at the front? i.e. are 3 layers ok for shoulders and arms?

Is that a 3 layer or 2 layer thick gambeson?

out of curiosity, what were you using for glove liners in this video?

      Two different gloves.
      1. Neyman Thokks.

      2. Leather and kevlar gloves from Faits d' Armes.

      Lionheart Historical European Swordsmanship
I was more curious about the yellow gloves. I do like the Neyman's but that opening in the palm is kind of an issue for a sweaty guy like me, so I'm trying to figure out what I could wear underneath to maintain palm traction.

Ah, those are 3M Comfort Grip gloves. Definitely recommended as undergloves.

Use modern material and make a Coif, Gambeson and Chausers. See if you can't get its ballistic rating up to II or IIA.

Would You recommend this gambeson for full contact longsword sparring?

    • @lionhearthistoricaleuropea1186

I have used it for full contact longsword sparring. However, I prefer to use a modern HEMA jacket with 800 Newton rated material and better breathability. I use a Neyman fencing jacket for longsword.

There are just a couple of drawbacks to a historical gambeson.
      1. Less breathable than modern materials.
      2. Less durable than modern materials.
      3. Less protective than modern materials.
It's also a little too thick to wear under brigandine, though you could definitely wear mail over it.

How thick did the 5 layers get? Are the arms just as thick as the body?
