Totally agree with you that Quakers use language in a way that goes beyond mere mimicry. I had a Quaker named Wasabe (obviously a green one) years ago. One night, I was up late working on an assignment for school. Around 2am, she started shrieking with that characteristic Quaker shriek. Since I was facing a deadline, I kept working and ignored her. Finally, she called out my name. I got up from my desk, walked to her cage and said, "What DO you want, Wasabe?" I didn't really expect an answer, but she gave me one: "Good night." With those two words, which she had heard me say regularly at bedtime but never before said herself, she was able to communicate that she was tired and the bright light was keeping her up (aside from which, Quakers live in large communities, and they like everyone to do the same thing at the same time, which meant she probably thought I should be going to bed, too). I laughed, turned off the overhead light, and put on a tiny desk lamp in my corner of the room (it was an efficiency apartment). Before resuming work, I went back to the cage and said, "I'm so sorry Wasabe--that was very inconsiderate of me. Is it better now?" Again, I didn't expect an answer but she gave me one that stunned me: she fluffed up and said, "I LOVE you!"
I usually turn off the lights and one night I had them on for some reason. Sure enough my gcc started crying out. Took me a while to realize the situation. They need darkness
I can validate that as well. My Quaker yells by name from the other room "Hey...", and if I yell back "what Jade?" She sometimes yells "Come here! Come here and see me!". Sometimes it's "what's up?" in response. If you give her something she likes, she often says "mmmmm... good stuff". She definitely associates certain things with certain phrases. One day I was joking around with her, giving her a bunch of funny middle names... Jadie this, Jadie that... she seemed offended and said "Jadie BIRDIE" which is what we call her sometimes. The emphasis was so funny to hear. She was saying, no it's Jadie BIRDIE. She also tells us when she has to drop a load... says "bombs away", and will poop on that same command when we are taking her away from the cage (so as not to do it elsewhere). Of course we taught her these phrases, but she uses them appropriately. She's really a cool bird, plays peekaboo and sings songs, and we've had her for almost 25 years, but she's also a vindictive little shit that will turn and bite you for spite. If you take her out of the cage when she doesn't want to go, she will often sneak a bite in when you are putting her back in. She's very cage protective, and it's even difficult to give her food and water without her charging to bite. It's almost like living with a moody 3-year-old.
It is true Quakers do need interaction. We bought a Quaker for 60% off at Petco because no one else wanted him. The associates that he was mean and had a bad temperament but turns out, he just didn't like gloves and they always try to handle him with gloves. Within one week he was the sweetest bird I have ever known.
Yep, Petco is awful to their animals. They hire teenagers for the most part, and teenagers usually don't give two shits. I've reported Petco a few times. I'm really happy your Petco parrots are in good homes.

I have a 23 year old green Quaker. She talks all the time, too! Some of the things you have shared sounds like my bird, Clydee Marie. She will not talk in front of strangers, and it takes a long time of people coming over before she will finally begin to talk in front of them. She also uses her speech in the correct manner, which makes it appear that she does understand what she is saying...... For example: She loves, loves, loves to play! She will gently nip, but there is no pressure - whatsoever! If I say, "OUCH"!! She will immediately say, "Sorry"! .... Then, she will go directly to the nip spot and make kissing sounds....Very CUTE! Excellent pet!
My quaker will kiss my hands to let me know that she is ok to be handled. If she doesn't and starts bobbing her head, look out! You're going to get bit! When she's feeling ornery and gets a reaction from a bite, she'll often yell Ouch! and laugh.
Bertie would apologize, too. He heard me say, "It's okay; I'm sorry!" when I startled him, accidently knocked him off my shoulder, etc. So when I would say "That hurts, he would say the same thing: "It's okay; I'm sorry!" Sometimes he would yell or mutter to himself over and over, pacing back and forth on his perch "Ouch! Stop it! That hurts!", too. But people, Frito's Mom is correct, and a lonely bird will get depressed and start pulling his own feathers, be more defensive of his cage, lose trust in you and so nip more often, etc. That's why there are so many on CL or in rescues: People ignore them or leave hem alone, they stop being so cute and talkative, and the owner loses interest.
We lost our Quaker (Harley) this morning. 27 years old, was failing for the past month or so. (Respiratory issues) Broke my heart as he passed in my hands. I will miss my "good mornings" and "good nights" and every bit of Harley's extensive vocabulary. He could whistle the entire Andy Griffith show song. He was such a good boy. I will forever hold him in my heart and thoughts. Oh how a little character can steal the hearts of us humans.

We have 3 Quaker parrots-absolutely love them! They are so much fun. Weird as it sounds, they speak and use their words appropriately. One of them, Cinderella, is a wonderful singer! All of them love car rides and even like to get in the pool with us. Great pets!

Man... I had a Quaker when i was 6-8 years old, then we left him/her with a terrible owner and he let him fly away... He was such a great bird, he ate dinner at the table with us every night with a little perch we built. He would still be alive today, cause they live so long... His name was Cheeko. : /
I have a male blue and a female green quaker parrot and they're just devine. They do bond generally to one person and yes they are possessive of their 'things'. Love them to bits.
Also, i'd like to add here folks that "blue mutation" Quakers tend to be a tad smaller in size then there green colored counterparts. There overall temperaments are different as well. Blue's tend to be more laid back and are quieter then the greens. Both can be VERY loud but nowhere near as loud as a Sun Conure or any of the other Aratinga species of Conure. Another point this lady failed to point out. Is that Quakers are NOTORIOUS for "feather plucking" themselves do to a lack of proper stimulation. And once they start plucking it's EXTREMELY difficult to correct and stop completely. These birds are certainly NOT a good "beginner bird" by any means. So i often steer people towards small conures such as the; Green Cheek, Black Capped, and Maroon Bellied conures. These birds are EXTREMELY affectionate and crave being held and stroked. They are not the best talkers either usually mastering only a few words. However, there affectionate nature MORE than makes up for there inability to speak in my opinion.
Yes, I can confirm this. if you dont give them attention, they are going to make sure your ears gets it and most people then get annoyed with the bird. and by attention, I dont meen 10 minutes a day...
I have one Blue Quaker that is 21 years old that my mother keeps along with a younger Blue Quaker that is the sister of the Blue Quaker I have which is about 12 years old. My Blue Quaker that my Mom keeps was a great talker, but my Mom is 85 and has a lot of other birds so she don’t spent the time she should with the Quakers. So the older Quaker has stopped talking as much and the younger Quaker mostly squawks very loudly. I wish I had not given the Quakers to her, but she wanted one so badly. I’ve tried to talk her into letting me have them back and she refuses because she claims that she talks to them all the time and that they keep her company. My Quaker like I said is about 12 years old. I think she is a female, but has never laid an egg, where as the sister of mine has had a ton of eggs over a long period of time. Anyway.....my Quaker talks.... and a lot.... sings the “Cops theme song Bad Boys”, the “Ghost Busters theme song”, and “ Who Let the Dogs out”. She knows when to say I Love you Momma,. She knows when I correct her, she knows I’m going to say “You want to go time out”, and she responds with the sweetest “I’m sorry,” following with “I love you Momma” then says “Be nice”.....and depending on the situation she will ask me , “You want to go time out”.... then maybe another “ you want to go time out”.....then another “Be nice”....if a three year old toddler who knew they did something wrong said it. She uses most of her words and sentences at the correct time and correct way. I have been trying to figure out new things to teach her....any suggestions? She has picked up words on her own, she makes the slight noise of tearing a sheet of paper towel on the roll. And make my swallowing when drinking a beverage noise....plus the noise I make when chewing something crunchy, or if I’m eating finger food, she makes the smacking noise of me licking my fingers, that’s embarrassing! She whispers peek-a-bo at times, and and she knows to hide her face to play peek-a-boo.....I wish I’d spent more time with her when she was younger, but she loved the lovebird and wasn’t interested in learning new stuff. She likes to go to bed before it gets dark. And when I start getting ready to go to bed, she has learned my routine and will tell me night night right before I go upstairs I have a question how do you get them to play with toys? When my daughter moved out she took all four of the cockatiels with her and I kept my Quaker and a love bird that my Quaker played with. The love bird played with toys, but still my Quaker would not, she only played with the love bird. But the love bird died and not sure why, could have been age related. But after that I knew my Quaker would get lonesome.....so I ordered the monthly Squawk box and after 3 months I had to cancel because she wouldn’t play with any of the toys or treats. I was so sad to cancel it, they send some really great toys and treats. But Quakers are really smart.
My Quaker is a year old and she (I think) only says 1 phrase (Whatcha doin?) (That I can discern). She's a gem and I love her so. I got her at 7 months old and she was largely kept in her cage I think. She was plucking her back feathers etc. Now I have her on a really good diet, she spends all day with me even while I work and gets her fill of attention and is not caged until she goes to bed (on her own). Her feathers have grown in beautifully. I'm hopeful she will start saying some more things! She's a great guard dog too. As soon as she sees someone outside or in the house that she doesn't recognize she has a distinctive "danger" squawk. ❤

Albinos obviously do exist, so that covers both white and yellow, as well as blue (yellow as in lack of blue pigment, blue as in lack of yellow pigment, and then white as lack of both, green as both pigments present). I'm just confused about the cinnamon one, can't even find a single picture of one and it doesn't make much sense because they don't naturally have any red pigment in their feathers. But yeah I was wrong for sure, sorry! P.S. Say hello to your quaker buddy from me! I hope to get one sometime soon, I'm convinced a quaker is my destined bird!

Just like Indian Ringnecks there are more mutations being created as time goes by, probably some Quakers I don't even know about. You can't go wrong with a Quaker, very smart and sweet little parrots. Like I mentioned above, mine will be 25 soon, I will tell him/her you said hello, thanks for the kind words!
Mine snipped skin tags and moles, and destroyed gold hoop earrings while I was wearing them but on the phone and distracted. They do become crabby at times, surrounding reproduction, molting, etc. Mine would occasionally shriek and nip during those times, but rarely actually break the skin.
Such a pretty color he is. I love how he just bobs his head and bounces. It seems like a lot of people don't understand quakers? I hear when they're older, though they don't "quake" as much, they sometimes do it for attention. It's just so cute.

Interesting. I had a quaker parrot when I was 3 years old til I was about 8, and he was the love of my life. We got him while he still needed to be handfed, and he never bit anyone in our family once. It could be because we got him at such a young age, so we might have just had a very unique bond with him, but not once did he bite. Actually, he did bite once, but that was when I had left for a couple of weeks and when we reunited with him, he didn't recognize me so it took him a couple days to warm up.

It wasn't because he didn't remember you. Birds have a phenominal memory. It was most likely because you were being punished for going away. I've known people who have had macaws that they spoiled rotten (bad idea with birds) and tantrum throwers. After several years, the families took a vacation, and they returned to a bald bird, because the bird was upset that they left. Once they start plucking, it is near impossible to get them to stop. And after pulling the same feather out repeatedly, the follicle gets damaged and they are unable to grow new feathers. Birds are temperamental, and they take lots of research to understand. They are creatures of habit, but easily get bored. Too much or too little of either will lead to behavior problems. Also, you simply cannot get a cage that is too large fur your bird. After running a successful breeding and handfeeding business, as well as rehabbing wild birds, I had an epiphany. It suddenly became clear to me that it is not natural or kind to keep these creatures who fly the skies with flocks of their own kind in cages.
I got our Annabelle when she was eight..350 with cage and is now 14. I am her favourite human and she on Y let’s me kiss and cuddle her...she tolerates the rest of the family. She talks all the time and is quite vocal when she wants attention or something to eat. I love her very much...family ,friends....not so much..🤔. I wish people would only do their research on birds before they get one...very messy, loud, aggressive during breeding season but would never give her away..I’m her third family that I know of.

+Sarah I have heard that happens, from what I've read, its usually caused by hormones and their desire to mate. Also, once they get away with being bitey, it becomes a real habit. Their are some good vidrod on RUclips to train them not to bite. What worked with Frito was twisting my are or finger (wherever he was sittting) and putting him off balance and telling "NO!" It only to a few times to work. He does get bitey every once in a while and I do that and he straightens right up.
Good talk about bringing a Quaker into your family.....you are right on all points.....adopted my guy at 9 months and could not break his bad habit of flying to the floor to step up.....the reputable bird store I bought him from did not teach him to step up from a platform or open door. Other than that he is the most great guy. I can only emphasize do your homework and please make sure the bird you are bringing into your family doesn't have any issues before you dive in.....of course the younger the better but don't neglect an older tame, sociable one. Have adopted a couple other older birds that were well socialized and they bond very well if you know something about the breed. I wish our bird talked! Not sure if she can or when she starts! She is 4-5 months Update! It’s been about 5 Months and she’s gotten really comfortable with us and she says “what are you doing” “peekaboo” “stop” “No” “what are you doing” and whistles sometimes so I’m really glad! extra- sometimes she also says quiero comer which means I want to eat in Spanish hahah!
One thing I’ve noticed with my Quaker is she is fairly quite, she very rarely yells. She loves to listen to me sing or talk in general. She is a bit closet taker.

The bigger the better. They are very active birds and need plenty of space for toys and several perches of different diameters and textures. Play stands on top of the cage are a must. 24x2436" high would be a nice size.
Paulie Soprano my darling Quaker helps me with grooming by plucking eyelashes with mascara clumps. He is also an awesome home security system. His cage is open all of the time. If he can't see me he yells for me. Thus, the clear shower curtain and rolling his home into the bedroom. His chicken impression screw with my 2 pet hens. He also does sound effect like a zipper when I pick up a pair of jeans or a baseball KNOCK going off a ball bat and mimics coughing.. or sneezing.... WE love those birdies...

Very good video. I have a parrotlet that talks up a storm as well and he used to be cage aggressive, but he has learned overtime not to be to me, so you can train them not to bite when you put your hands in the cage. I will say he is still very cage aggressive with other people.
That's awesome. I didn't realize parrotlets are talkers. Frito generally only bites when I'm switching out his toys and I yell at him "No! " and then he tells me "Go lay down! " because he hears me tell the dogs that when their bad. Its so funny!
Much truth here. They rock, and they can be a pain in the a55. Mine was nice to kids, but otherwise mean AF. He was also a closet talker; He would only talk if he thought no one could hear/see him. He could say 50+ phrases and was a master aviator since I let him learn to fly by helping him when he was just starting. I would gently throw him to his cage and he learned how to land. Quakers rock, but know what you're getting into. They, like other parrots, are permanent toddlers.

Its actually a sm.dog toy that squeeks. She has a bird that she cuddles up to & another toy. I watch her close & she has never tryed to tear them up. She can say yum yum. We always tell her yum yum when i give her strawberries, banana, or her favorite steamed corn,& cauliflower.

My baby is a year old I'm a introvert with social anxiety and work from home selling so I've had a lot of time to spend with smurf. We're very bonded one thing I've been very consistent with is sleep routines and a good diet. To avoid future hormonal problems and grumpiness I make sure Smurf gets 12 hours sleep and darkness every night. He has a seperate sleep cage in my spare room with complete black out blinds. He goes to bed at 8pm and isn't disturbed or got up until 8am it makes such a difference to his temperament. He does everything with me and because I talk to him and name everything and use context when I talk to him during all our activities his speech isn't just mimicking he uses words in the right context and actually can hold minnie conversations and ask for what he wants. It is like having a toddler that's going to never grow up and they can live up to thirty years they're a big commitment but my little man is worth it and I'm not a people person so I'm more than happy with the bond I have with him.

My boyfriend and I already have a lovebird and just recently we rescued a Quaker Parrot that was just wondering around our apartment complex, he flies so the chances of him being from a neighborhood not necessarily our apartments is very high but we are trying to find if someone claims him, if not we would definitely love to give him a home. Do you think is ideal to have a lovebird and Quaker? I think he is a little older maybe 3-5 years but I'm not sure and he is definitely domesticated, very sweet but I would love to know what kind of care tips would you give us? +Majo Garcia You are so welcome! I would not house the Quaker in the same cage as the Lovebird. You can take them out of the cages together and see how they respond to each other. Many people successfully house different species of birds together and they get along fine. Both the Quakers and Lovebirds can be very dominant birds at times, so if you do end up housing them together at some point, make sure to keep a close eye on them to make sure one is not getting bullied by the other. Also make sure that you have an adequate size cage. A Quaker requires a cage twice the size that a Lovebird does. As far as feeding goes, the Quaker will need a quality mix of seed, nuts, fruits and veggies. Check with your pet store and they should be able to recommend a good prepared blend for you. Also, any foods you are feeding your Lovebird should be safe for the Quaker also. If you Google "safe foods for Quakers", there are some good sites that you can print out lists of what types of fruits and veggies are safe for the Quaker. So basically, a good seed mix, fruit and nut mix, and fresh fruits and veggies. What I do with Frito is, I feed him prepared mixes from the pet store and then he gets whatever fresh fruits or veggies that are safe for him, that we are eating for our meals that day. He has become quite the beggar and starts yelling every time I walk in the kitchen. LOL Good luck, and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask!
these little birds are common where i live and the other day i found a wild baby fallen from a nest and rescued her from my dog who wanted to eat her. Such a cute little bird it had no problem being with humans and was so sweet... we gave her to our local trusted pet shop so they can give her up for adoption because i couldn't keep her, miss her already. made me want to have a bird sometime

Usually the male is the one easiest to teach how to talk but on the other hand the female can be a master of sounds. One of my male Quaker lived for for about 23 years, the other one for just 5, the one female that I have left she is about 18 years old...so it is really a commitment.... but they are wonderful birds!

Do you think a Quaker would get along with a budgie? I got a budgie about 2 months ago and we have been working on flight training and I thought I might be ready for another bird in another couple of months. I am a farm wife so I’m home everyday! So I have time to spend with it. Eventually I would want the Quaker to free fly around the house with the budgie.

Well of course they will prefer their own species but they are attention hogs. Lol I only have 1 but through research it is said they they may prefer their companians to you if you have more than 1. It can go either way, you may loose your personal bond or you may end up with 2 battling for your attention. My Frito bird loves talking to the dogs and cats too. He's always interested in what their doing. I have a herd of Chihuahuas and 3 cats so there is always something to keep Frito attention.
I have two quakers, one being mochi and the other one mojito. Mochi is yellow and she is very talkative, whenever I talk she answers back, she also laughs at my jokes. With mojito he’s more quite but very clingy, but he doesn’t talk much other than “stop it” because he likes to nibble, and he nibbles a lot. He also likes flying to my plate taking my food and runs away. I love them so much
I have locked Quaker parrots hot them when they were 4 months from the aviary here in miami..kne is 6 months old now the other is 3 yrs old. Yes they are talkers..so social is right. I wanted a blue one but they were already sold. Mine are green. Thank you for this video.
Quakers are very territorial, that's true. But Just as in nature, a pet quaker will allow only it's family members to enter (put your hand in) it's cage. Mine allows me to reach in to get him. He actually makes a game of it and will run into a little hut in his cage for me to chase and catch him. He even lets my husband go into the cage after him, but not as freely as he allows me to.
Thanks for this video....I have a conure and a cockatiel...they are quiet....I'm throwing the idea around buying a quaker but not sure....Their being loud is a turn off...my birds go to bed around 9:00 pm and don't wake up till around 11:00 am...I'm spoiled by this..I also heard that blue quakers are more prone to illness...do you know any facts about this...thanks
+loveparrots sherry You welcome! A Quaker won't be any louder than you conure. I can't speak for all Quakers, but Frito is on my sleep schedule. I never have to cover his cage all the way. His cage is within a few feet of my bed, and when I take a nap, he does too. I never hear a peep out of him when I'm sleeping. I don't have any other birds though, so that is a factor. As far as health issues, I haven't heard that about blue Quakers. I do know they all are very hardy birds. That's why they are illegal in so many states, because they seem to be able to thrive in most environments. I think you would love having a quaker, I have been around and owned many birds in my life and Frito is by far the most playful, engaging, and entertaining bird I have ever owned. I think they are the comedians of the parrot world.
I have a blue Quaker and when I first got her she would have bouts of yelling, but when that happens I'd put her in the cage and cover it for a while until she calmed down and she is perfectly quiet now, and listens if she is hushed, she also has a much lower voice than my other birds instead of loud tweeting and chattering she has a low voice and croaks her noises, and seems to understands her behavior in context so training is easy
Parrot Lover hope this helps..I've had a Quaker for 10 years my sister purchased him for our dad..she bought him at a rescue center so we didn't know alot about him but at least for Kasey..his name is Kasey Kane..we were watching a race and my dad said whoever wins ..that's his name..hence..Kasey Kayne. Shes exactly right..they are not legal in all states because they do bite..but if your very gentle with them and you do interact with them they are great birds. Very sociable..they do talk alot..but their voices aren't like Greys their not deep and human-like but they do talk. The more you handle them and spend time with them they will talk up a storm. My Quaker is like Frito he wont talk I Infront of an audience so maybe they are all that way so if your looking for 1 to show off might not be a good choice. I had an African grey Congo my sister has an African grey Timneh...alot of maintenance alot of training slot of cleanup! Much more expensive..these little guys are extremely lovable they love to cuddle and bond..an excellent choice in parrots..I hope this helps.
Parrot Lover also my Quaker goes to bed around 10 pm..I've never had any trouble getting him to go to bed I just tell him its Nite Nite and cover him and in 10 years hes never woke me..but as soon as I remove his cover he will sqwak until I acknowledge him...I hope that helps
Yes!! Just got a quaker parrot about 3 months ago. My wife and I both have bonded to him, somehow. But no matter who tries to readjust his water/food or toys the little booger goes into attack mode every time. We spoke with some bird experts and vets and they assume its just natural territorialism of their cage and "possessions"

Hello! We just got gifted a Quaker parrot. He is around 1 year but was constantly kept in his tiny cage. Doesn’t even know how to eat anything but baby bird food. Any recommendations? We also have no experience with birds but want to do what’s best for him. He is extremely quiet.
I have an indian ringneck and a quaker. The ringneck shows interest in hanging out around me and playing with lots of toys, very playful, smells clean and is only mildly aggressive to others sometimes when he doesn't want interaction, warning with the open beak or a soft bite. The quaker is more interested in spending time and interact with me, she grooms me and at times likes to be pet. She have full fly feathers and when we walk outside, it guards the area and warns me growling if someone or an animal is near us. Sometimes it fly around the house or on a tree for a little bit but she always want to keep me on sight and never just take off to go away. She is very "street smart" and fearless, I have to be careful because she may attack others if she feels they are a threat to me or her or just jealous of attention. She did drew blood a few times on my brother in law because he tried to retrieve the bird when she escaped outside (probably looking for me). It also smells more "gamy" :) I love her so much

Totally agree with you that Quakers use language in a way that goes beyond mere mimicry. I had a Quaker named Wasabe (obviously a green one) years ago. One night, I was up late working on an assignment for school. Around 2am, she started shrieking with that characteristic Quaker shriek. Since I was facing a deadline, I kept working and ignored her. Finally, she called out my name. I got up from my desk, walked to her cage and said, "What DO you want, Wasabe?" I didn't really expect an answer, but she gave me one: "Good night." With those two words, which she had heard me say regularly at bedtime but never before said herself, she was able to communicate that she was tired and the bright light was keeping her up (aside from which, Quakers live in large communities, and they like everyone to do the same thing at the same time, which meant she probably thought I should be going to bed, too). I laughed, turned off the overhead light, and put on a tiny desk lamp in my corner of the room (it was an efficiency apartment). Before resuming work, I went back to the cage and said, "I'm so sorry Wasabe--that was very inconsiderate of me. Is it better now?" Again, I didn't expect an answer but she gave me one that stunned me: she fluffed up and said, "I LOVE you!"
I usually turn off the lights and one night I had them on for some reason. Sure enough my gcc started crying out. Took me a while to realize the situation. They need darkness

I can validate that as well. My Quaker yells by name from the other room "Hey...", and if I yell back "what Jade?" She sometimes yells "Come here! Come here and see me!". Sometimes it's "what's up?" in response.
If you give her something she likes, she often says "mmmmm... good stuff". She definitely associates certain things with certain phrases.
One day I was joking around with her, giving her a bunch of funny middle names... Jadie this, Jadie that... she seemed offended and said "Jadie BIRDIE" which is what we call her sometimes. The emphasis was so funny to hear. She was saying, no it's Jadie BIRDIE.
She also tells us when she has to drop a load... says "bombs away", and will poop on that same command when we are taking her away from the cage (so as not to do it elsewhere).
Of course we taught her these phrases, but she uses them appropriately.
She's really a cool bird, plays peekaboo and sings songs, and we've had her for almost 25 years, but she's also a vindictive little shit that will turn and bite you for spite. If you take her out of the cage when she doesn't want to go, she will often sneak a bite in when you are putting her back in. She's very cage protective, and it's even difficult to give her food and water without her charging to bite. It's almost like living with a moody 3-year-old.

It is true Quakers do need interaction. We bought a Quaker for 60% off at Petco because no one else wanted him. The associates that he was mean and had a bad temperament but turns out, he just didn't like gloves and they always try to handle him with gloves. Within one week he was the sweetest bird I have ever known.
I hate how PetCo treats animals. I bought a cockatiel from there and the employee taking her out almost broke her wing. Glad your Quaker is happy now
Yep, Petco is awful to their animals. They hire teenagers for the most part, and teenagers usually don't give two shits. I've reported Petco a few times. I'm really happy your Petco parrots are in good homes.

I have a 23 year old green Quaker. She talks all the time, too! Some of the things you have shared sounds like my bird, Clydee Marie. She will not talk in front of strangers, and it takes a long time of people coming over before she will finally begin to talk in front of them. She also uses her speech in the correct manner, which makes it appear that she does understand what she is saying...... For example: She loves, loves, loves to play! She will gently nip, but there is no pressure - whatsoever! If I say, "OUCH"!! She will immediately say, "Sorry"! .... Then, she will go directly to the nip spot and make kissing sounds....Very CUTE! Excellent pet!

My quaker will kiss my hands to let me know that she is ok to be handled. If she doesn't and starts bobbing her head, look out! You're going to get bit! When she's feeling ornery and gets a reaction from a bite, she'll often yell Ouch! and laugh.
Bertie would apologize, too. He heard me say, "It's okay; I'm sorry!" when I startled him, accidently knocked him off my shoulder, etc. So when I would say "That hurts, he would say the same thing: "It's okay; I'm sorry!" Sometimes he would yell or mutter to himself over and over, pacing back and forth on his perch "Ouch! Stop it! That hurts!", too. But people, Frito's Mom is correct, and a lonely bird will get depressed and start pulling his own feathers, be more defensive of his cage, lose trust in you and so nip more often, etc. That's why there are so many on CL or in rescues: People ignore them or leave hem alone, they stop being so cute and talkative, and the owner loses interest.

We have 3 Quaker parrots-absolutely love them! They are so much fun. Weird as it sounds, they speak and use their words appropriately. One of them, Cinderella, is a wonderful singer! All of them love car rides and even like to get in the pool with us. Great pets!

Man... I had a Quaker when i was 6-8 years old, then we left him/her with a terrible owner and he let him fly away...
He was such a great bird, he ate dinner at the table with us every night with a little perch we built.
He would still be alive today, cause they live so long...

Had Quaker parrots for 15 years and yes, they are super smart. Loveable little squeakers.
I have a male blue and a female green quaker parrot and they're just devine. They do bond generally to one person and yes they are possessive of their 'things'. Love them to bits.

Also, i'd like to add here folks that "blue mutation" Quakers tend to be a tad smaller in size then there green colored counterparts. There overall temperaments are different as well. Blue's tend to be more laid back and are quieter then the greens. Both can be VERY loud but nowhere near as loud as a Sun Conure or any of the other Aratinga species of Conure. Another point this lady failed to point out. Is that Quakers are NOTORIOUS for "feather plucking" themselves do to a lack of proper stimulation. And once they start plucking it's EXTREMELY difficult to correct and stop completely. These birds are certainly NOT a good "beginner bird" by any means. So i often steer people towards small conures such as the; Green Cheek, Black Capped, and Maroon Bellied conures. These birds are EXTREMELY affectionate and crave being held and stroked. They are not the best talkers either usually mastering only a few words. However, there affectionate nature MORE than makes up for there inability to speak in my opinion.
Yes, I can confirm this. if you dont give them attention, they are going to make sure your ears gets it and most people then get annoyed with the bird. and by attention, I dont meen 10 minutes a day...
I have one Blue Quaker that is 21 years old that my mother keeps along with a younger Blue Quaker that is the sister of the Blue Quaker I have which is about 12 years old. My Blue Quaker that my Mom keeps was a great talker, but my Mom is 85 and has a lot of other birds so she don’t spent the time she should with the Quakers. So the older Quaker has stopped talking as much and the younger Quaker mostly squawks very loudly. I wish I had not given the Quakers to her, but she wanted one so badly. I’ve tried to talk her into letting me have them back and she refuses because she claims that she talks to them all the time and that they keep her company.
My Quaker like I said is about 12 years old. I think she is a female, but has never laid an egg, where as the sister of mine has had a ton of eggs over a long period of time. Anyway.....my Quaker talks.... and a lot.... sings the “Cops theme song Bad Boys”, the “Ghost Busters theme song”, and “ Who Let the Dogs out”. She knows when to say I Love you Momma,.
She knows when I correct her, she knows I’m going to say “You want to go time out”, and she responds with the sweetest “I’m sorry,” following with “I love you Momma” then says “Be nice”.....and depending on the situation she will ask me , “You want to go time out”.... then maybe another “ you want to go time out”.....then another “Be nice”....if a three year old toddler who knew they did something wrong said it.
She uses most of her words and sentences at the correct time and correct way. I have been trying to figure out new things to teach her....any suggestions? She has picked up words on her own, she makes the slight noise of tearing a sheet of paper towel on the roll. And make my swallowing when drinking a beverage noise....plus the noise I make when chewing something crunchy, or if I’m eating finger food, she makes the smacking noise of me licking my fingers, that’s embarrassing!
She whispers peek-a-bo at times, and and she knows to hide her face to play peek-a-boo.....I wish I’d spent more time with her when she was younger, but she loved the lovebird and wasn’t interested in learning new stuff.
She likes to go to bed before it gets dark. And when I start getting ready to go to bed, she has learned my routine and will tell me night night right before I go upstairs
I have a question how do you get them to play with toys? When my daughter moved out she took all four of the cockatiels with her and I kept my Quaker and a love bird that my Quaker played with. The love bird played with toys, but still my Quaker would not, she only played with the love bird. But the love bird died and not sure why, could have been age related. But after that I knew my Quaker would get lonesome.....so I ordered the monthly Squawk box and after 3 months I had to cancel because she wouldn’t play with any of the toys or treats. I was so sad to cancel it, they send some really great toys and treats.
But Quakers are really smart.
My Quaker is a year old and she (I think) only says 1 phrase (Whatcha doin?) (That I can discern). She's a gem and I love her so. I got her at 7 months old and she was largely kept in her cage I think. She was plucking her back feathers etc. Now I have her on a really good diet, she spends all day with me even while I work and gets her fill of attention and is not caged until she goes to bed (on her own). Her feathers have grown in beautifully. I'm hopeful she will start saying some more things! She's a great guard dog too. As soon as she sees someone outside or in the house that she doesn't recognize she has a distinctive "danger" squawk. ❤

They actually can live to be in their thirties up to 40. They can come in blue shades,green shades,yellow,white and cinnamon

Albinos obviously do exist, so that covers both white and yellow, as well as blue (yellow as in lack of blue pigment, blue as in lack of yellow pigment, and then white as lack of both, green as both pigments present).
I'm just confused about the cinnamon one, can't even find a single picture of one and it doesn't make much sense because they don't naturally have any red pigment in their feathers.
But yeah I was wrong for sure, sorry!

Just like Indian Ringnecks there are more mutations being created as time goes by, probably some Quakers I don't even know about. You can't go wrong with a Quaker, very smart and sweet little parrots. Like I mentioned above, mine will be 25 soon, I will tell him/her you said hello, thanks for the kind words!
Mine snipped skin tags and moles, and destroyed gold hoop earrings while I was wearing them but on the phone and distracted. They do become crabby at times, surrounding reproduction, molting, etc. Mine would occasionally shriek and nip during those times, but rarely actually break the skin.

Interesting. I had a quaker parrot when I was 3 years old til I was about 8, and he was the love of my life. We got him while he still needed to be handfed, and he never bit anyone in our family once. It could be because we got him at such a young age, so we might have just had a very unique bond with him, but not once did he bite. Actually, he did bite once, but that was when I had left for a couple of weeks and when we reunited with him, he didn't recognize me so it took him a couple days to warm up.

Ya, every one is an individual as far as the biting goes. They all have their own personalities. Your right, hand feeding does make a difference.

It wasn't because he didn't remember you. Birds have a phenominal memory. It was most likely because you were being punished for going away. I've known people who have had macaws that they spoiled rotten (bad idea with birds) and tantrum throwers. After several years, the families took a vacation, and they returned to a bald bird, because the bird was upset that they left. Once they start plucking, it is near impossible to get them to stop. And after pulling the same feather out repeatedly, the follicle gets damaged and they are unable to grow new feathers. Birds are temperamental, and they take lots of research to understand. They are creatures of habit, but easily get bored. Too much or too little of either will lead to behavior problems. Also, you simply cannot get a cage that is too large fur your bird. After running a successful breeding and handfeeding business, as well as rehabbing wild birds, I had an epiphany. It suddenly became clear to me that it is not natural or kind to keep these creatures who fly the skies with flocks of their own kind in cages.

Y let’s me kiss and cuddle her...she tolerates the rest of the family. She talks all the time and is quite vocal when she wants attention or something to eat. I love her very much...family ,friends....not so much..🤔. I wish people would only do their research on birds before they get one...very messy, loud, aggressive during breeding season but would never give her away..I’m her third family that I know of.

I have heard that happens, from what I've read, its usually caused by hormones and their desire to mate. Also, once they get away with being bitey, it becomes a real habit. Their are some good vidrod on RUclips to train them not to bite. What worked with Frito was twisting my are or finger (wherever he was sittting) and putting him off balance and telling "NO!" It only to a few times to work. He does get bitey every once in a while and I do that and he straightens right up.

Good talk about bringing a Quaker into your family.....you are right on all points.....adopted my guy at 9 months and could not break his bad habit of flying to the floor to step up.....the reputable bird store I bought him from did not teach him to step up from a platform or open door. Other than that he is the most great guy. I can only emphasize do your homework and please make sure the bird you are bringing into your family doesn't have any issues before you dive in.....of course the younger the better but don't neglect an older tame, sociable one. Have adopted a couple other older birds that were well socialized and they bond very well if you know something about the breed. Thanks for a very well done talk about this most delightful friendly bird.

It’s been about 5 Months and she’s gotten really comfortable with us and she says “what are you doing” “peekaboo” “stop” “No” “what are you doing” and whistles sometimes so I’m really glad! extra- sometimes she also says quiero comer which means I want to eat in Spanish hahah!

One thing I’ve noticed with my Quaker is she is fairly quite, she very rarely yells. She loves to listen to me sing or talk in general. She is a bit closet taker.

I would not recommend anything smaller than that. He utilizes every inch of his space. The larger the better!

The bigger the better. They are very active birds and need plenty of space for toys and several perches of different diameters and textures. Play stands on top of the cage are a must. 24x2436" high would be a nice size.

Paulie Soprano my darling Quaker helps me with grooming by plucking eyelashes with mascara clumps. He is also an awesome home security system. His cage is open all of the time. If he can't see me he yells for me. Thus, the clear shower curtain and rolling his home into the bedroom. His chicken impression screw with my 2 pet hens. He also does sound effect like a zipper when I pick up a pair of jeans or a baseball KNOCK going off a ball bat and mimics coughing.. or sneezing.... WE love those birdies...

Very good video. I have a parrotlet that talks up a storm as well and he used to be cage aggressive, but he has learned overtime not to be to me, so you can train them not to bite when you put your hands in the cage. I will say he is still very cage aggressive with other people.
That's awesome. I didn't realize parrotlets are talkers. Frito generally only bites when I'm switching out his toys and I yell at him "No! " and then he tells me "Go lay down! " because he hears me tell the dogs that when their bad. Its so funny!

Much truth here. They rock, and they can be a pain in the a55. Mine was nice to kids, but otherwise mean AF. He was also a closet talker; He would only talk if he thought no one could hear/see him. He could say 50+ phrases and was a master aviator since I let him learn to fly by helping him when he was just starting. I would gently throw him to his cage and he learned how to land. Quakers rock, but know what you're getting into. They, like other parrots, are permanent toddlers.

Its actually a sm.dog toy that squeeks. She has a bird that she cuddles up to & another toy. I watch her close & she has never tryed to tear them up. She can say yum yum. We always tell her yum yum when i give her strawberries, banana, or her favorite steamed corn,& cauliflower.

That's cute! My dogs have squeaky toys but so far Frito doesn't make that sound. He does mimic the sound of my shampoo bottle squirting when we're in the shower. Frito has a Facebook page if you want to share pictures or videos of Penny.
My baby is a year old I'm a introvert with social anxiety and work from home selling so I've had a lot of time to spend with smurf. We're very bonded one thing I've been very consistent with is sleep routines and a good diet. To avoid future hormonal problems and grumpiness I make sure Smurf gets 12 hours sleep and darkness every night. He has a seperate sleep cage in my spare room with complete black out blinds. He goes to bed at 8pm and isn't disturbed or got up until 8am it makes such a difference to his temperament. He does everything with me and because I talk to him and name everything and use context when I talk to him during all our activities his speech isn't just mimicking he uses words in the right context and actually can hold minnie conversations and ask for what he wants. It is like having a toddler that's going to never grow up and they can live up to thirty years they're a big commitment but my little man is worth it and I'm not a people person so I'm more than happy with the bond I have with him.
Very informative video!!! My boyfriend and I already have a lovebird and just recently we rescued a Quaker Parrot that was just wondering around our apartment complex, he flies so the chances of him being from a neighborhood not necessarily our apartments is very high but we are trying to find if someone claims him, if not we would definitely love to give him a home. Do you think is ideal to have a lovebird and Quaker? I think he is a little older maybe 3-5 years but I'm not sure and he is definitely domesticated, very sweet but I would love to know what kind of care tips would you give us? Also what kind of foods can we feed him?

You are so welcome! I would not house the Quaker in the same cage as the Lovebird. You can take them out of the cages together and see how they respond to each other. Many people successfully house different species of birds together and they get along fine. Both the Quakers and Lovebirds can be very dominant birds at times, so if you do end up housing them together at some point, make sure to keep a close eye on them to make sure one is not getting bullied by the other. Also make sure that you have an adequate size cage. A Quaker requires a cage twice the size that a Lovebird does.
As far as feeding goes, the Quaker will need a quality mix of seed, nuts, fruits and veggies. Check with your pet store and they should be able to recommend a good prepared blend for you. Also, any foods you are feeding your Lovebird should be safe for the Quaker also. If you Google "safe foods for Quakers", there are some good sites that you can print out lists of what types of fruits and veggies are safe for the Quaker. So basically, a good seed mix, fruit and nut mix, and fresh fruits and veggies. What I do with Frito is, I feed him prepared mixes from the pet store and then he gets whatever fresh fruits or veggies that are safe for him, that we are eating for our meals that day. He has become quite the beggar and starts yelling every time I walk in the kitchen. LOL

these little birds are common where i live and the other day i found a wild baby fallen from a nest and rescued her from my dog who wanted to eat her. Such a cute little bird it had no problem being with humans and was so sweet... we gave her to our local trusted pet shop so they can give her up for adoption because i couldn't keep her, miss her already. made me want to have a bird sometime

Usually the male is the one easiest to teach how to talk but on the other hand the female can be a master of sounds. One of my male Quaker lived for for about 23 years, the other one for just 5, the one female that I have left she is about 18 years old...so it is really a commitment.... but they are wonderful birds!

I have some questions for you, since you've owned one that has reached a very old age. What is their behavior like as they get older into their teens?

Yes if you are with them alot, they are great companions.
I have a green female Quaker parrot named Nori and even if though she's in a room with our other birds she's fairly quiet not to mention she's such a fast learner

Wow Quacker sound a lot like my Sun conure Mango if I have a scab she will pick it tell it bleeds.your boy is so cute. Mango is 1 year and 1 nonth old now she doesn't talk but super tame and loves people

I brought her home at 11 weeks old then about a couple of months later she layed her first egg. She is a year old now & she's layed probaly a dozen eggs. Its been 2 1/2 months since her last.

Do you think a Quaker would get along with a budgie? I got a budgie about 2 months ago and we have been working on flight training and I thought I might be ready for another bird in another couple of months. I am a farm wife so I’m home everyday! So I have time to spend with it. Eventually I would want the Quaker to free fly around the house with the budgie.

Well of course they will prefer their own species but they are attention hogs. Lol I only have 1 but through research it is said they they may prefer their companians to you if you have more than 1. It can go either way, you may loose your personal bond or you may end up with 2 battling for your attention. My Frito bird loves talking to the dogs and cats too. He's always interested in what their doing. I have a herd of Chihuahuas and 3 cats so there is always something to keep Frito attention.
Would you choose a Quaker or caique for a family with kids but want a parrot who interacts? Conures seem too loud and nippy or am I wrong?
I've owned Quakers for 15 years and they can learn and figure things out being creative too

I have two quakers, one being mochi and the other one mojito. Mochi is yellow and she is very talkative, whenever I talk she answers back, she also laughs at my jokes. With mojito he’s more quite but very clingy, but he doesn’t talk much other than “stop it” because he likes to nibble, and he nibbles a lot. He also likes flying to my plate taking my food and runs away. I love them so much
I have locked Quaker parrots hot them when they were 4 months from the aviary here in miami..kne is 6 months old now the other is 3 yrs old. Yes they are talkers..so social is right. I wanted a blue one but they were already sold. Mine are green. Thank you for this video.

Quakers are very territorial, that's true. But Just as in nature, a pet quaker will allow only it's family members to enter (put your hand in) it's cage. Mine allows me to reach in to get him. He actually makes a game of it and will run into a little hut in his cage for me to chase and catch him. He even lets my husband go into the cage after him, but not as freely as he allows me to.

Thanks for this video....I have a conure and a cockatiel...they are quiet....I'm throwing the idea around buying a quaker but not sure....Their being loud is a turn off...my birds go to bed around 9:00 pm and don't wake up till around 11:00 am...I'm spoiled by this..I also heard that blue quakers are more prone to illness...do you know any facts about this...thanks

You welcome! A Quaker won't be any louder than you conure. I can't speak for all Quakers, but Frito is on my sleep schedule. I never have to cover his cage all the way. His cage is within a few feet of my bed, and when I take a nap, he does too. I never hear a peep out of him when I'm sleeping. I don't have any other birds though, so that is a factor.
As far as health issues, I haven't heard that about blue Quakers. I do know they all are very hardy birds. That's why they are illegal in so many states, because they seem to be able to thrive in most environments.
I think you would love having a quaker, I have been around and owned many birds in my life and Frito is by far the most playful, engaging, and entertaining bird I have ever owned. I think they are the comedians of the parrot world.
I have a blue Quaker and when I first got her she would have bouts of yelling, but when that happens I'd put her in the cage and cover it for a while until she calmed down and she is perfectly quiet now, and listens if she is hushed, she also has a much lower voice than my other birds instead of loud tweeting and chattering she has a low voice and croaks her noises, and seems to understands her behavior in context so training is easy
Parrot Lover hope this helps..I've had a Quaker for 10 years my sister purchased him for our dad..she bought him at a rescue center so we didn't know alot about him but at least for Kasey..his name is Kasey Kane..we were watching a race and my dad said whoever wins ..that's his name..hence..Kasey Kayne. Shes exactly right..they are not legal in all states because they do bite..but if your very gentle with them and you do interact with them they are great birds. Very sociable..they do talk alot..but their voices aren't like Greys their not deep and human-like but they do talk. The more you handle them and spend time with them they will talk up a storm. My Quaker is like Frito he wont talk I Infront of an audience so maybe they are all that way so if your looking for 1 to show off might not be a good choice. I had an African grey Congo my sister has an African grey Timneh...alot of maintenance alot of training slot of cleanup! Much more expensive..these little guys are extremely lovable they love to cuddle and bond..an excellent choice in parrots..I hope this helps.
Parrot Lover also my Quaker goes to bed around 10 pm..I've never had any trouble getting him to go to bed I just tell him its Nite Nite and cover him and in 10 years hes never woke me..but as soon as I remove his cover he will sqwak until I acknowledge him...I hope that helps

Yes!! Just got a quaker parrot about 3 months ago. My wife and I both have bonded to him, somehow. But no matter who tries to readjust his water/food or toys the little booger goes into attack mode every time. We spoke with some bird experts and vets and they assume its just natural territorialism of their cage and "possessions"

We just got gifted a Quaker parrot. He is around 1 year but was constantly kept in his tiny cage. Doesn’t even know how to eat anything but baby bird food. Any recommendations? We also have no experience with birds but want to do what’s best for him. He is extremely quiet.
What do you mean by baby bird food? Have you put a dish of pellets in his cage or parrot seed?
I have an indian ringneck and a quaker. The ringneck shows interest in hanging out around me and playing with lots of toys, very playful, smells clean and is only mildly aggressive to others sometimes when he doesn't want interaction, warning with the open beak or a soft bite. The quaker is more interested in spending time and interact with me, she grooms me and at times likes to be pet. She have full fly feathers and when we walk outside, it guards the area and warns me growling if someone or an animal is near us. Sometimes it fly around the house or on a tree for a little bit but she always want to keep me on sight and never just take off to go away. She is very "street smart" and fearless, I have to be careful because she may attack others if she feels they are a threat to me or her or just jealous of attention. She did drew blood a few times on my brother in law because he tried to retrieve the bird when she escaped outside (probably looking for me). It also smells more "gamy" :) I love her so much
