I use a Baofeng UV-5R to talk on PMR446. Power is 5w, counterpoise is copper wire. Range is about 13 miles (depending on weather, cloud coverage). My PMR446 callsign is WRX25 or Wrexham25.
It's illegal (power above 0.5w), but the power limits are not enforced in any way so you should be good to use a 5w or 10w HT there.
Thinking of upgrading to a 25w mobile bass station soon, as I've got my foundation licence and I want to access more repeaters and talk further.

As a final bit of research, after you finish the course and are getting good scores on the mock exams... just before test, have a look for some intermediate course videos, be surprised what comes up in it THAT WILL HELP with the foundation exam! But not till just before test last look ! Good luck

That extra low power comes in handy when you're using DMR and going through the hotspot in your pocket, which is tethered to your phone. I do this with my Alinco radio while using a tiny stub antenna and my Openspot-3 while I'm hiking. It saves on battery and keeps the radio cool on those hot summer days.

100% this - I miss the 0.05W mode that I had on my old Kenwood F6 - nobody seems to put in anything like that. My Anytone 868 does 1W minimum. Which is fine if you're across the room really, but is a waste of power and you'd be surprised how far 1W goes if you worry about using only the power needed and clogging the freq over a wide area

Love the fact that these cheap Chinese dual banders bring a usable radio into the realms of most Hams... I remember paying just shy of £500 for a dual bander around 20 years ago for something that had about the same amount of features but was about twice the size! I am hooked on these and also love the DMR radios where you can easily talk to the world using internet trunking... The chinese DMR's can be had for around £40! The hobby now has so many new branches and many of them very affordable... Keep them coming Andy! Cheers Melvyn G7GZH.

I am from the Netherlands and there are less and less ham stations to hear on the UHF and VHF. The ones who are on air seem to work with from the box equipment.
The HAM examens still seem to be based on techniques from the 60s and 70s.
Looking inside the modern radio it's hard to discover any part that is mentioned in the examens .
My opinion is that the exam's system is out of date.
To revive the UHF/Vhf band maybe it's better to open it up for licences without examens.
Offcourse the licenses should be connected with many conditions to keep things under control.
It can also attract people to do exam's for the HF bands.
Please can someone comment on my opinion.

The uk exams have been updated with aspects of digital /sdr equipment, so it’s slowly changing. I suspect many passing today want to operate and not build their own which full licenses seem to focus on.
Our foundation is pretty good but I’d like to see 25w instead of 10w which can be a challenge for newbies on hf who usually start with compromise antennas. 10w is great once you know what you’re doing. How many get out off before they reach that level of knowledge?

N type connectors are better and more suitable than PL259 for UHF. Were you transmitting into a dummy load designed for UHF ? Yes 50 Ohms is 50 Ohms at DC but UHF into 50 Ohms loads not designed for UHF can be deceptive and give errors. The Standing wave ratio (SWR) looked very good, so I assume you got everything correct. SMA is also better at UHF so remember if your Power/SWR meter is designed for UHF don't be surprised if it has N connectors because that is correct for those frequencies.

I know amateurs and amateurs know me i've even attended the local club. But im not lisensed. And non of them care because although i've owned amateur radio equiptment. I dont transmit on anywhere outside 27mhz. But i do listen and theres no law against listening. Theres no law to say i cannot own amateur equiptment aslong as i dont transmit on it. And even then it has to be proven. I never would transmit on Amateur bands i fully respect it. But i cant believe some one reported you to ofcom thats just really petty.

    • @KB1UIF
      @KB1UIF 2 года назад

There are laws against listening to certain transmissions so your statement is incorrect.
Example no listening to cell phone or phone conversations generally.
No repeating of information you might hear on emergency services frequencies. Some emergency services encoding you are not allowed to listen to. Also some countries have different laws regarding monitoring radio transmission, so don't make a sweeping statement saying it's not illegal to listen. Check the laws, YES amateur station transmissions are typically open for anyone to listen to legally. But check your local laws first. In the past in the UK you needed a licence to own a radio to listen to any radio stations. That licence became the TV licence. So technically unless you own a TV licence in the UK you cant own a radio either !! I doubt anyone would get a fine today for owning a radio just to listen but dont assume anything read the small print.
Oh and in "time of war" radios can be banned also.

Im only interested in operating on 27m and i like doing repairs and alignments which is a big part of it for me. Some times an amateur radio is purely used as a monitor it used to be my ts570d. Id setup a radio with all my equiptment but then id like to do an on air test into a well calibrated radio as a final check. right now i have no interest in becoming lisenced because i want to save that for when all my children have flown the nest. I also have a disabled son that takes up alot of time as he needs constant attention. So i dont wan to commit to that side of it just yet. I started out on radio at age 13 and by age 14 i had been accepted into a dx club that had a minimum age requirement of 18! But i had so many people speak well of me the Oscar Bravo Chairman gave me a shot at age 14. I've never been the local idiot i've always been respectful. And still am to this day. I i have a communications reciever i mostly use now i just had to replace a few things to make it accurate again because of age. And i listen on that and dont bother anyone. If you find one you are likely to find its very costly also.
You are talking 27Mhz and 446Mhz two bands very far apart on the radio spectrum.
So they require two different lots of filtering in the transmit stages. Unless you get something like an HF VHF UHF radio designed for Ham radio use and costing around a $1000 it's not likely to be available. Right now i can only think of one possible solution under $500 and that's the HackRF SDR but the output power from that is in the region on milliwatts. So add a couple of RF amplifiers into the mix and your back up to $1000. Then remember you need different antennas for those bands too. All in all not a product you are likely to find. If you really wanted to transmit on 27Mhz and UHF I think maybe the FT991 would do that job, new price about $1300 right now. In my opinion, get seperate radios for the job. Save yourself a ton of cash.

They ask for two camera angles so the examiner can watch the candidate and the room I think.

It's done over a video meeting so you and your computer are monitored while taking the test.

My local club has a 10yo who has passed Foundation and Intermediate licence. So just about anyone who can read should be able to get a licence to use these radios.

I'll give this a Thumbs down for the intro and departure, music and video editing is not subject content, its a carrot, it makes the producer feel good and pisses off everyone else. Then there is the review, so what, a 5 watt hand held range is the same for any 5 watt handheld. Nothing new or informative and a waste of time to the point that I'm leaving this comment.
Ifyou want to do a program on music do it, if you want a video on Wood Pecker radio, do it, but bait, rock music and video edting is misrepresenting the subject and misrepresentation has a lot of less polite and more blunt adjectives that would be appropriate.

If you get your basic foundation licence, are you able to use more power on pmr 446, i thought these frequencies were still limited to 0.5w power.

Does not having a licence just stop you talking on it or owning it and listening

It stops you from transmitting legally! If you transmit without the correct licence you are breaking the law.
Doing so carries heavy fines, confiscation of equipment and possible jail time. Oh and yes you will be monitored recorded and some day possibly get a knock on the door. Just like owning a TV but not having a TV licence in the UK. They can detect the electronics working inside of a TV and even tell what station you are tuned to.
The local oscillator and color oscillator in TV's give off enough of a signal to be detected and they are not even transmitters like hand held or mobile radio transmitters are designed for.
So the answer is dont do it unless you are allowed to by your countries laws.

Aha ! So we can’t talk I fought we are living in free democratic country! Didn’t know that for taking gov will fines you or even put you in the scary jail! We not living in Russia where everyone spying 🕵️‍♀️ on everyone including neighbours! For. Goodnesses sake those radios whatever you calling ham CB they are walkie talkie .kids calling to each other from 3miles away.ocfom didn’t knock ✊ yet it’s been years now ! Let them have fun! Now internet mobile phones every kid have no many people using ham radio . Even if they use without license what possible damage they can do ? On uhf 2watts on a farm 10 miles away from city in the valley where signal is blocked after 2-3 miles do they really going to disturb special intelligence agencies or mi6 or they kgb . And there are lot people who don’t pay tv license and simple they don’t open the doors. I do pay my tv license if you asking! And even I disagree cos is rip off .and I’m telling you for sure people who don’t pay the tv license like my friend he had fine cos his wife politely opened the door he refused went to to court he paid 50£ fine he said still cheaper than 150£ so he still don’t pay cos would cost him extra 100 £ .Another thing not sure if you have heard of pirates radios in London,Birmingham or Manchester .for ocfom to do something like for those guys they block the signal 24/7 every day I mean they transmit on that frequency. Not for gimme and paddy ask how was your day twice a week don’t think ocfom is interested in their bullshit!
