    I think interior designers get complacent when talking about furniture placement ie "just move it away from the wall!". The reason being that they only get hired by people with enough money to live in homes with significantly larger room sizes than the average person. Which is fine, but it's silly to apply the visual logic of sofas etc in a 20 x 30 foot(or more) living room with an average persons' living room. I used to be a butler in L.A. The last house I worked in had a living room that was 40 x 60 feet. Floating furniture in that space made absolute sense, however in my on site apartment, my furniture was against the wall because my living room was 10 feet wide. One other thing to consider is whether the backs of your furniture are attractive enough to be shown. If you have the space to float your furniture, make sure that there is some design flair on the backs as well, eg fluting, a folded crease running down the middle, quilting etc. And yes, T.Vs above fire places are just tacky as hell as well as being way too high.

    • @yeahno9380
      @yeahno9380 3 года назад +6

      Agree with you on the furniture thing. Another thing that slightly annoys me, is when designers say to hang curtains as close to ceilings as possible. Which I get it does make a difference but then curtains end up being short and don't look as nice. Majority of curtains only come in 84in lengths. And tend to cost a small fortune or are like unicorns when found in longer lengths. I most times have to add extra fabric just to get a long enough curtain if I hang them even halfway to ceilings. Or maybe it's just me🤷🏾‍♀️.

    • @kiwiwanderingusa9988
      @kiwiwanderingusa9988 3 года назад +6

      @@yeahno9380 Again, people with the money to hire interior designers also have the money to have custom drapes made to length. One house that I worked in paid over $10,000 for curtains in one large room. And yes, they were up to the twelve foot ceiling and they looked lovely.

    • @yeahno9380
      @yeahno9380 3 года назад +4

      @@kiwiwanderingusa9988 that's sounds about right. A friend of mine had custom drapes made for some windows in their home that cost close to $1000. And they were pretty close to standard windows. It just seems sometimes some designers are a bit out of touch with the average person when they are giving tips. Not knocking on them and obviously some only cater to certain $$$clientel$$$. But what's the use of some of these tips if most ppl don't have access or can't implement them Imo.

      @@yeahno9380 , I've tried to use all these point in my home. My curtains are high and wide on my windows, but they are about 5 inches below my 5 &3/4 inch crown I installed. I used 96inch curtains, they touch the floor (I have 9ft ceilings) and got them at Home Goods, TJ Max, Marshall's and Ikea. You can find taller curtains at Ikea like 109 and maybe I should have gone for them, but I didn't. I'm happy with how they look for just an average house.

    Hi Nina! Wow! I made at least half of the mistakes you mentioned!! ! 1.I'll be returning my 5x7 area rug I recently purchased for my 9x9 sectional ( I really liked the colors and style of the rug and yes, I'm cheap! the price!!) 2. I'll be bringing out the rollers and paint brush. 3. I will raise the curtains in my dinning room. 4. I was planning on changing out a hanging light fixture that is outdated! Well I'll be busy this week! No wonder I'm not getting that feeling of somewhat of a Designer look... even though I have a very nice home and furniture.

    I definitely have a couple of these. I had played around different tv placements and couches for 3 years. But, on top of the mantle is where it works best. I have two other walls (one is opposite the fireplace and another is opposite a huge window, where it probably should be). Opposite the fireplace felt awkward because there are two entry points and it makes me watch those instead of the TV. And, opposite the windows allows people to see what I am watching from the outside and I don't like having my back sitting against a huge window - bad feng shui!). And practical reasons, I placed my couches against the wall. It is ok, though. I live alone...but if Nina ever stops by, I can easily move the furniture a foot or two away from the walls. :)

    Great tips Nina. The pictures helped. Do you think you can do a video on colours? How do we match furniture to the wall? How to find cohesive colours that work with one another. What colours will suit light and dark timber floors? There are so many whites. Is it ok to mix cool and warm whites? So many people are going for greys these days. Is this a trend that will stay for long? What are the new ‘in’ colours in interior design?

    In my new home in the family room the only place the tv can go is over the fireplace, but there is now a tv mount that comes out and down to move it to eye level. Doubt you could do this when the fireplace is on, but works most of the time. It at least appears to solve the neck issue when it is lowered. Going to do some research.

We have three plus one bedrooms two bathrooms. The basement is finished and pretty open besides the bedroom, washroom, and laundry. The laundry is not finished. Desperate to paint and would like to keep as neutral as possible although it is a lakeshore town. I am a care giver for my two 91 year old parents who are living with us. Please could you help with some ideas.

      How wonderful and commendable that you are caring for your parents! I am certain your parents adore you and appreciate your love. I would stick to warm neutrals since they will always be in style. Try a warm white throughout the house and perhaps one accent color for a featured wall. Since your space is small don’t use too many colors as it will be choppy. Good luck 🥰

      That is a very good question. In that case what you want to do is spread them so that the middle of the gallery is at eye level, and then you can go as high and as low as you like.

      Hi Natalia, I hope you found the video helpful! I understand your dilemma. Sometimes our only wall happens to be above the fireplace which makes it very difficult. Play around with the idea of moving the television and changing up the furniture placement. You will be surprised with what you come up with. Thank you for watching ❤️

      Your tv is fine above the fireplace. I have issues with my living room layout as well. People can say it’s tacky etc. But most people do not live in “show” homes. We are living in our homes. That being said, if I ever decide to sell my home and stage it, I would take the tv down and not have one there at all. But for day to day living, if u can’t move it, don’t. ☺️

    I noticed your bedroom coffee table shape is circular. What determines the shape to choose for a room? I live in a small apartment and have an oval glass top coffee table but thinking perhaps I should get a round table.

    • @NinaTakesh
      @NinaTakesh  3 года назад +1

      My coffee table in my bedroom is round because it sits in a round area of the bedroom that is perfectly circular. You can certainly bring in an oval if your room is rectangular. If the area is square a round would be more appropriate. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching xx

    Yes, one of my pet peeves is hanging pictures too high! I also don’t know why people paint their ceiling white with colored walls. The ceiling should be a lighter color of the walls. I’ve even seen professional designers make that mistake.

    • @jimifiedler7667
      @jimifiedler7667 3 года назад +1

      I agree about hanging pictures too high. However, when you have low ceilings and little natural light, white ceilings reflect the light, making the room brighter. Also, as a do it yourself kind of girl, I would not want to repaint ceilings.

    I am breaking the tv over the fireplace rule. My living room has too many issues. One wall is the fireplace with windows on either side, to the left is open to dining room, so no wall, to the right is a huge sliding door and the only other wall is across from the fireplace. If I put the tv there instead of the sofa, u would have to put seating to the sides and turn your head to watch tv. Therefore, it’s staying over the fireplace! And yes, it’s way to high. Oh well. 😁

      There are several ways. One is to poke a hole behind the wall and run it behind the drywall. Another would be to get a slim cable cover Hope that helps.

    Im conflicted with the advices in this video. Nina clearly tries to project a image of class, elegance, and taste, something very relative but I acknowledge is a matter of trends, which in most cases here are for wealthy households, not for the average Joe and Jane family. And wealthy families do not watch YT videos, they simply go and hire people like Nina. The result is a content that looks pretentious and is rendered useless in many aspects. Yes I agree the TV should not only be away from fireplace but also not in a living room.

    • @NinaTakesh
      @NinaTakesh  3 года назад

      I appreciate your perspective and understand where you’re coming from. I must disagree that advice given on this channel is not specifically for those living in large homes with an endless budget. I often mix high-end with low end items and hanging art for example at eye level on any wall irrespective of its zip code is good advice. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment.

      @@NinaTakesh I really like the art! 😊 Great video. I did not know about those white colours. I thought if the room was dark you should warm it with a warmer white because then the room is often placed in a direction so the light is already a bit cold in temerature. Anyway... test paint is always a good idea.
