@@AfterPrisonShow I worked as a greeter at Walmart and we were to never try and apprehend someone stealing we were supposed to ask to check their purchases but we were only suppose to aggressively ask for the receipts of people with big ticket items such as T.V.s. everyone else we were supposed to just walk on by if they didn't stop to let us see their receipt.

Work in retail. You are definitely told not to stop them physically. The most you can do is make them feel like the store knows what they are doing. It works ok, considering what you can do. When I feel bad I look at what the company actually paid for the items, not the customer price, and I'm like oh it cost the company peanuts. I wonder if corporations can write it off as well...

Yup frig that shit. Let them steal the whole store. If they want people to get punched in the face, pay them tons of money and pay for any surgery required by being beaten up. Retail workers don't get paid enough to give a damn.

Many times they don’t want to get entangled in a case because as a representative of the store they’d be on the hood for what you did or potentially did to the suspect in the lead up to stopping them. They’d rather not pay the court costs in comparison to the value of theft. Probably also enforce a double standard behind closed doors for you not having stopped the thief if hypothetically you just didn’t try

I almost lost my job 10 yrs ago when I was working at Harmons for running after a shoplifter and making them give back what they stole. My manager came over, apologized to who I found out was a serial shoplifter in the area, gave him the items back, and let him walk out of the store and was told "let the cops handle it"...but my manager never called the cops lol. Meanwhile, I got screamed at by my manager because he said I put the store at risked of being sued if I had harmed the shoplifter when I stopped him (mind you Im 5'5" and at the time weighed no more than 105lbs...how much harm was I going to do stopping a fully grown man who I didnt even put hands on him but simply ran in front of him and told him to hand over the items henjust stole!?). I was told to just let ppl go who stole from the store, which was often. This was a manager who was a grown man who refused to do anything when myself, a female coworker, and a few female customers kept being harrassed by another man right outside the store for cigs and money(like to the point this aggressive man was screaming in our faces and had us pushed up against the glass windows of the store). My manager wouldn't even call the cops...basically, he was a p**** who was scared of his own shadow. After these incidents I realized my minimum wage job was not worth my energy and just let ppl do as they please in the store and found a much better job so I could quit working at Harmons.

I find it ridiculous that they made a bigger deal in the media about the woman trying to do her job and stop shoplifters than the criminals themselves who obviously do this all the time if they were caught doing the same thing at a Walmart on the very same day. They should have just gotten jobs but instead they are going to get a prison sentence.

They shouldn't have fired her, though the policy does protect their employees from their own bad decisions. Chasing down some shoplifter that might turn around and stick a knife in you is ridiculously stupid. You have a family to go home too, don't lose your life over $2000 of Target merchandise. Cashiers aren't trained for this, and I can guarantee they've all been told: “let it go, or you will be.” It's an insurance nightmare, an employee killed while working looks bad. It looks even worse is they're seen to be supporting this behaviour. Ultimately they'd rather just take the loss, it's factored into their prices anyway.

The company will do whatever causes the least risk, paying for employee medical bills isn't cheap and doesn't return a profit. That's why we have police to deal with these situations, and that's who should be dealing with it before it gets out of hand. If they could do it without having to pay for the results, these companies would REQUIRE their employees to confront criminals, and that's not their job in the first place. Therefore, if you want that type of staff, it has to be security where you can train and limit your liabilities.

    • @johnconway4466
      @johnconway4466 10 месяцев назад +1

@@pyrrho314 Making the employee a sitting duck is still going to cause similar issues. There's plenty of instances where even cooperative employees are harmed by these criminals. Medical bills aren't the worry, new age social politics are. The company is scared of being sued by a thief or their family.

This is because they can get violent and it has lead to shop employees to be stabbed. Imagine that in the US, where many people wear a gun just for fun..

This is 1 story among a zillion:
I worked as a Gate Guard at Lowe’s in Lincolnton, NC from 96 - 99.
Earned a number of service awards from there for catching would-be thieves red handed. Also trained an untold number of Guards. Each person sent back up front when their receipt didn’t match their goods would file a complaint about Me.
My last year, I put in for a transfer to SC because NC people are mean. I said as much when I asked for the transfer. I go for the interview in Seneca, SC, where everybody is like little gingerbread people. Nobody gets mad, raises their voice or makes mistakes there. Such politeness. Seneca people are like Canadians. Near perfect. So I am granted the transfer and 2 weeks later, I move 3 hours away. I show up a half hour early and I am told to wait in the training room. The manager comes in and says that I have been terminated in transit without cause. He is originally from Gastonia, NC so he is not perfect. After I threw a righteous fit, ran over flower buggies in the parking lot and even chased 1 smart ass employee.with my untagged car, (I am from South GA and not perfect either) I laid rubber for the unemployment office. After some digging by them, it turns out that the aforementioned complaints about Me from Gypsy type customers were honored way down the road. As for the why on that one, it’s a mystery. No one was hurt when I showed my azz but they could have been. If so, then I might have a prison story of my own.
Thank God that’s not the case.
    Yes, boycott Lowe’s.

You’re NEVER supposed to chase after and or touch the person stealing.
That’s what they have lost prevention for…
You would get fired doing this at any company… the rule is extremely clear.

Anyone saying stuff like she deserved to be fired for " being a liability" is a clown.
That's BS. Big corporations have been documented and went on record for firing employees merely because the employee either
    A) notified police for the incident
    B) were the witness of a crime taking place, despite no intervention on their part.
You're damned if you do, damned if you don't in their eyes. They're not protecting your life as some of these people like to claim. In many instances, you are a liability for simply being there. Defending corporate BS is why things suck as much as they do these days.

this reminds me of a story i heard about 2 girls that were fired from their job just for recording some thieves so they could give the police some evidence due to the fact their work place didnt have working cameras. from what i remember they didnt try to stop it or anything just recorded them and then once the thieves ran out they tried to get a quick shot of the get away car.

While it’s common knowledge not to put yourself in danger as an employee of any company, bottom line is, she was assaulted and if anything should have been supported and given a stern warning and retraining, not get fired after being assaulted by some low down filthy shoplifters who are so low they resort to violence!

then the company has to pay her hospital bill which can easily cost more than the stolen goods were worth. It's better for it to be the police that deal with this sort of thing, or staff trained to be security.

It breaks my heart to see that picture of the woman with the black eye. And it's not just the black eye of course, but the pain being physical has a lot more shock value I think. Unbelievable what happened to this poor lady.
