I have visited this cemetery a couple of times - whenever in Normandy visit Le Cambe - see the soldiers who died on D-Day and beyond and pay your respects. It is often quiet here because it' s a German cemetery, but Brits and Americans visit it pretty much daily.

I visit here every time I am in Normandy, along with other WW2 cemeteries. It's a very sad, sobering place.

Much respect to Herr Franz Glockel and his kameraden. And to his American friend who put his arm around his shoulder with compassion. Long live the West! Long live Germany!

@@VoicesofHistory Cool. I will watch it. You're lucky to have known him. I've met many WSS vets and interviewed one. He granted me permission to publicise it when he passes away. He is still going strong!

Tay, I haven't released his full interview yet. I hope to some day. Which German soldier is still alive today that you interviewed?

I have been to this cementary,
When the American veteran asks the german veteran, what the Grave stone says,
In plain german, it says, ein deutche soldaten, or zwei deutche soldaten
And in English, that means, one german soldier, or two german soldiers.
Why the gravestone is like that, is probably cause they could not identify the corpse
The same thing on the American Graveyard, only it says something like, this man is only known to god (dont remember if that is 100% correct

I am very moved at the conclusion of this video.
The American Veteran puts his arms around Mr. Gockel and says "comerade."
We are indeed all one human family.

and seems to me who use to be enemy
    can now be friends
I don't know for sure because I never was a soldier.
    but I am just guessing
    to any soldier RIP

Though they (Germany) may have been the enemy 70+ years ago, as a military veteran myself, I personally have MUCH respect for the "enemy soldiers", Mr. Gockel, included. Obviously, not for what they stood/fought for, but for the SIMPLE FACT that they were SOLDIERS,...CARRYING OUT their orders, willing to DIE and SACRIFICE for their country and their people. Naziism was/is one of the EVILEST of "concepts" the world has ever known, but these "grunts" will forever be HEROES, imo!! R.I.P., Mr. Gockel

I remember an incident here in Canada. An old German soldier in his old uniform went to a cemetery full of our dead soldiers. He placed a flower(rose?) on their graves and saluted them.

@@VoicesofHistory Yes I saw the 2 hour version too, very moving. I have had the opportunity to meet several WW2 veterans myself. The most impressive was the meeting with Vince Speranza (101 airborne division) in the Overloon war museum. Vince was the man behind the "Basonge beer" myth. In my eyes the Allied and Russian WW2 veterans are real heroes. A salute to you, Thanks!

My father was a regular solider 1920 to 1958 and he met a lot of German servicemen after the war and would visit Germany to visit his old regiment The Germans used to come to the parade and my father used to say I meet a lot of Germans and i have yet to find one who was shooting at me in Italy and France the ones he met were all fighting on the Russian front so who the hell was shooting at me My own view is they all swore to support Hitler and a lot of them were the Enemy full stop and they would have been happy to invade us and rule us The Allies did not have concentration camps which every German knew were being used to kill women and children we defeated them twice on the Battlefield and a good thing too I was not there so i hold no grudge but i think a lot of our veterans would not have made friends with them My father said a good German is a dead one and he did not really change his mind
