    Thanks for the video. Just a small correction. The Bee Gees wrote for Kenny Rogers, not Dolly Parton. He enlisted her on one of these songs - Islands In The Stream - for a duet. As history shows, this song then became the biggest ever selling country song.

    I'm sad about Otis Redding never having gotten to sing "To Love Somebody..." Can you imagine how spectacular that version would've been, with all his soul?!

    • @Madrocker1954
      @Madrocker1954 3 года назад +3

      The song the Gibb brothers wrote for Otis Redding was not "To Love Somebody," but the unreleased song "End of My Song." Which you can hear on RUclips. Otis Redding died December 10th, 1967. The Bee Gees released their composition "To Love Somebody" in June 1967, so Redding was still very much alive. The Gibb brothers may have been inspired by Otis Redding or written "To Love Somebody"with him in mind, but a lot of the reason for heir successes was to write songs as if they were writing them for other artists. What would those songs sound like.
      So, the idea the Bee Gees wrote the song for Otis is an urband legend. Mostly false. It's possible Redding or his management may have approached the Gibb brothers and asked them to write a song for Otis, which was "End of My Song." Or they wrote a song for Otis and were going to offer it to him but died before he could hear it or record it. Unfortunately, the idea it was "To Love Somebody" has become so large in the story the brothers believed it was the song written for Otis.
      It's sort of like Dolly Parton believing Elvis wanted to record her song "I Will Always Love You." The Parton song Elvis wanted to record was "Coat of Many Colors," because it hit home. Parton's claim was disputed by everyone who worked for Elvis when it came to recording and knew which song it was he wanted to record. Most people today believe Elvis wanted to record "I Will Always Love You," but it too is an urban myth. Mostly spread by Parton but totally false.

    #11 Interesting fact: any Beatle fan should pick up their "Bee Gee's 1st" album. It's excellent. As Christian already beat me to it, "In My Own Time" sounds like a Beatle song - perhaps a Revolver outtake. "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" is fantastic. "Red Chair Fade Away," "1941 New York Mining Disaster," "Craise Finton Kirk Royal Academy of the Arts" (stupid name, fantastic song), and "To Love Somebody" are the other highlights, for me.

      @@WaitingForTheHook As I understand it, the Bee Gees were huge Beatles fans and admitted their early years were very Beatles influences, as I think most artists were at that time. I know Maurice Gibb played bass on most of their tracks. The help and influence of Vince Melourney and Colin Petersen can not be overstated. They were professional musicians some years before the Bee Gees became internationally famous. Fun Fact: The early years of the Bee Gees (before they broke up for the first time, mentioned in the video) were as a five-piece band. They had a Guitarist and Drummer. The guitarist, Vince Melourney, even sang the only song on a Bee Gees record not sung by a Gibb.

    • @Bruce15485
      @Bruce15485 3 года назад +2

      The song "Such A Shame" was sung and written by Vince Melourney and appeared on the Bee Gees "Idea" album. A fantastic track. Also, the drummer Colin Petersen was a child film star in the 50' and 60's. Both Vince and Colin supported the Bee Gees in Australia musically before the Bee Gees became an international success ! The Bee Gees were never better when they were a 5 piece band in the late 60s.

There are other country tunes they recorded themselves, too. Try "Lay it On Me," "Railroad" "Marley Purt Drive" for just a few :)

    well that is only part of the story,really as a lifelong sixties obsessive I'm always peeved that ,people don't really appreciate their late 60's recordings.First and Horiozontal are fantastic album,brimfull with excellent songs and certainly as experimental as the Beatles at the same time.Idea from late 1968 sounds rushed and uninspired,no wonder the band had been on the road constantly for almost two years ,however 1969's ODESSA is a tremendous work,sadly aftyer that the Bee Gees seemed to be lacking in what made them so special,!971's Trafalgar apart from the Hit single How can you mend a broken heart(also covered by Al Green)is really a mediocre work.there are some good songs on the subsequent albums.Then of course came the 'reinvention' as disco act,which to me ios too much focussed on.yes it was their most successful period where they seemed to sell 1000 records every minute,but thank goodness,there were some good parodies on the disco era Bee Gees ,notably by Kenny Everett
