Aren't we also discussing the idea of animals and cat here too? Like with pizza, just in general. I would say " cat is the best pet"

Tutor Greg explains it. If you're talking about 'a cat' (only one), then you would say: A cat is the best pet.
However, if your pluralized it to 'cats', then you would say: Cats are the best pets. So in this case, zero or no article is used.
