"Evangeline" It was sometime after midnight I was looking for a friend My headlights lit her body By some pine trees on a bend I slowed down right beside her I turned the music down She looked around and climbed inside She didn't make a sound [Chorus] Evangeline Evangeline Evangeline Well soon we started talkin' I asked her for her name She said it's not important But I'll tell you anyway My mother loved the bayou My daddy worked the land The named me after what they loved So the world would understand [Chorus] We stopped just passed the crossroads She thanked me once again I didn't want to leave her But I drove on just the same I thought about her story Words whispered from her mouth Her beauty and her innocents Where credit to her sound [Chorus] I could not believe She was gone when I returned The forest evening chorus was the only sound I heard Now if you ever see her Be sure to say hello Her level thumb My stop you If you're westbound and alone [Chorus]
...and you'd be wrong. This song was loosely based on the Wordsworth poem of the same name. The poem tells the story of lovers separated by the Great Expulsion of 1755, when 1100 French Canadians were sent downriver by the British, most of whom settled in New Orleans. You get a ton of bayou references in McNabb's song here, befitting the setting...and if you go to Louisiana bayou country, you will still find plenty of ladies named "Evangeline" after the poem, and they all pronounce it "Lyne".
I don't know but I think i herd this version of this song but it was done by a band as a cover and they remade this song and i am tryint to find it everywhere! Help!
Maybe in America, where everything is pronounced wrong due to ignorance. In Europe we go by latin, so the true pronunciation would be Evan-jel-een or Evan-jel-een-eh in Spanish or Italian.. But I'll go with McNabb on this 'un.
I grew up in the 80's but I didn't find out about this band until 1996. It's a wonderful
song!
Never seen this and LOVE this song - even called my daughter Evangeline. THANK YOU so much for posting it, made my day!
14 years ago your comment, 14 years later, I've also called my daughter Evangeline after this song. 💕
Perhaps one day they'll meet by chance.
"Evangeline" It was sometime after midnight
I was looking for a friend
My headlights lit her body
By some pine trees on a bend
I slowed down right beside her
I turned the music down
She looked around and climbed inside
She didn't make a sound
[Chorus]
Evangeline
Evangeline
Evangeline
Well soon we started talkin'
I asked her for her name
She said it's not important
But I'll tell you anyway
My mother loved the bayou
My daddy worked the land
The named me after what they loved
So the world would understand
[Chorus]
We stopped just passed the crossroads
She thanked me once again
I didn't want to leave her
But I drove on just the same
I thought about her story
Words whispered from her mouth
Her beauty and her innocents
Where credit to her sound
[Chorus]
I could not believe
She was gone when I returned
The forest evening chorus
was the only sound I heard
Now if you ever see her
Be sure to say hello
Her level thumb
My stop you
If you're westbound and alone
[Chorus]
I have seen these guys live back in the 80s and they were one of the best live gig bans of the time.
Go away little boy
What an amazing song I love it.
So glad you posted this - a certain little girl won't let me go on RUclips without playing this!!!!
What's important is that McNabb is a genius!
What a fantastic voice.
Blimey, have not heard this in years! Have this on a single somewhere. Goes back in time. My ex used to blast this out in his car during the 80s
The fact that these are an incredibly obscure band and artists like Rihanna are world famous show that the music world is sometimes MAD!!!!
For some reason I have always loved the lyrics of this little ditty. The melody too! What more could one ask for?
This is a hidden gem
cracking tune from an underated band
How this wasn't a number 1 I'll never know..Still, too good for the charts I suppose....
aye ,those were the days, always preceeded with should i stay or should i go then the smiths ,the cult, etc
Surely their best song?
CrusaderBeach Solo Piano no way fella
I vote for Love is a Wonderful Colour on that front but this is fab too.
they certainly were a great live band ,i remember one critic said that he found their discs `pompous` but was knocked out by them live
...and you'd be wrong.

the poem is by Longfellow
I love this song. But the line "a credit to the south" always makes me laugh.
