Kolkata has been traditionally a favourite for Christmas festivities dating back to days of British Raj. Sometimes in 1960s celebrations shifted to Park Street Area which has lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. It was largely an unorganized event where people came in evening to Park Street Area for a night of celebrations. In 2011, government took initiative to organize things.. Allen Park became center of activity. Choirs from local schools perform alongside food stalls selling traditional comfort food and drinks.
A Christmas tree at crossing of Camac street is the show stopper or shall I say traffic stopper. 70s style shiny mirror disco ball combined with modern LED lights cast a eclectic hue on Christmas tree. Bloggers and photographers jostling with common man aka selfie experts to get a perfect picture with Christmas tree in background - a traffic stopper indeed. Open air food stalls are set until Middleton street thereafter famous bars and restaurants dominate the area.
Vehicular traffic is closed after 10 pm on Christmas and New Year Eve. As midnight approaches things do get chaotic and sometimes requires police intervention.
