For all of those old enough to remember how the cell phone used to be a luxury, crap like this is likely to become more or less mandatory at some point in the future.
Phones never became mandatory though but it's just really hard to live life without one in modern society. I imagine this will be the same thing, not quite mandatory but eventually most people will have it

Cyberpunk makes a good point for it. People who can't afford cyberware basically are cast out, or are forced to work for giant corporations that will pay for it (and own it). This technology is amazing, but it wont be used for good long term.

But when you read those crazy descriptions with a modern mindset, it's quite obvious they were describing technology. I don't believe in god, at least the one portrayed in the bible. That is clearly a human, or group of humans, (I don't believe in ancient aliens) posing as a god and using their technology to scare less technologically developed (I do not like the term primitive, they were just as smart as we are now) people into submission.
