Welcome back! Nice to see you down this end of the country (although even though I live in Dunedin, nothing beats Wellington). Going to miss you being here in NZ, but I'll definitely continue to follow what you get up to elsewhere! Love your content ❤
Appreciate it, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'll miss being in NZ too! But at least I'll have all of the memories and moments in these videos saved forever! I'm happy to hear you will continue to follow my future travels! I always look forward to comments like these, from AWESOME supporters like you!!!
@@kelliqh2721 It's a slang term for the Gas Station meat pie. Probably to scare off visitors😁😁 [In some areas it is also called a "Mystery Pack"] The reality is NZ has very high food hygiene standards. Gas Station pies are usually made in bakeries and come in sealed wrappers.
Commercial option is Maketu Smoked Fish Pie, can be found in supermarkets for as little as $3 on special. They had a more famous Maketu Mussel Pie but had to cut that from the range during a financial issue.
From California: awesome video..... go-to eats here are the usual burgers or burritos, would be very cool to have a pie shop around to mix it up they look good
Yes cant beat pepper steak and steak n cheese oh and yes always always blow on the pie y'all 😂 I love how you know all your NZ brands eg: Pams, Whittakers etc and NZ lingo eg: mince - ground beef, icing - frosting etc. Another great vid as always Brock, welcome back to middle earth down under.
Aussie here. Still absolutely gobsmacked you guys dont have these in your neck of the woods. I've heard though the grapevine there's at least a couple a couple of places stateside that DO sell them but rarer than hens teeth.
Yes I am! Although I only have one more NZ video planned as my travels here are ending :( . I hope you and all of my other viewers continue to enjoy my future travel content!
I got a passion for pies and fish&chips after watching Brocks vids.. I ate a pie a day, tried custard Squares, pizzas and put on 10kgs in 8 weeks!! Now its back to boring keto. Haaa it was such fun!
Pie is another one of those strange American words that tends to mean something different than what it does elsewhere... If you ask me if I want a pie, I would assume it would have some kind of meat filling. What they call pies we call tarts. Although we do call apple pie, apple pie.! I don't eat bait, but the seafood pie is a first, I bet some people love it.
Fat bastard pies, smaga pies (Cromwell), Sheffield world famous pies are a few of the many amazing pie places in new Zealand. Personally I also rate u-bake in Timaru they do really good pies and other items plus it's only 10 minutes from my house lol.
Freya was with me, and she did enjoy the pies! She just wanted me to film the pie video by myself for old time sake! The camping has gone down well, but there won't be another video on it as it is very repetitive. (Ex: Set-up camp, cook dinner, go for an evening walk, get ready for bed, etc.) We ended up donating a lot of the stuff that we had in that video because there was just too much clutter to make things easy!
You want a good custard square? Buddy you can't go past Dunheaths custard squares! I believe they're made in the Sth Island but some supermarkets (New World) sell them. No other CS's come close believe me. Delicious!!! 😋
believe it or not but the al supremo custard square is from 'pak n sav' petone bakery, they're made with French custard is called crème anglaise, bang on, if you're not there by 11am, they're gone, they do take phone orders to set aside which is fantastic. try it. Enjoy your posts.
Favourite pie in New Zealand for me is a Steak Tomato & Onion, not made by many PieShops or Bakeries unfortunately. So if you haven’t already tried one , I suggest you do. Bon a petite.
I live in N.Z and iv never heard of the bastards, btw its not mince n cheese, its steak n cheese, potatoe top. steak n cheese and if the pie shops any decent you will get some yummy pieces and quality pieces of meat. also if u get to try one steak n mushroom and the best so far for me is 'Steak Ham n cheese'
Re: Custard squares. The only one I could give a 10/10 was one I bought once in Whanganui. It has a layer of pastry through the middle, too, and passionfruit icing!! It was easy to eat, not too sweet, and the pastry was flaky. The second best was one with coffee icing. You don't get many good custard squares anymore. Most are very blond underneath, even verging on uncooked. Maybe I'm just too fussy! My hubby would have loved your pepper steak pie.
yep very good pies. i used to go to the sheffield pie shop near arthurs pass, unfortunately they are now just average. hillyers pies from lincoln were number 1, now just slop but if you ever get to the bakery in prebbleton, about 10 minutes south of christchurch, the steak, cheese, jalapeno pie is awesome
I can tell that's a good establishment even though I'd love to smell it. I just freeze framed as you pointed 👉 at the window the 2nd time All three of those will suit me just fine. 1 Cranberry, Chicken and Brie. 2 Lucifers Pepper Steak. 3 Magic Steak and Mushroom. Love watching your YT content. Please stay here with us.
I do not really want to post this but the best pies you will buy in nz are lake farm pies they are to die for and i have no affiliation but they have numbered amounts that go out and i do not want to be missing out but i bet you they are the best and i am a pie guy from way back
Anderson pies from Hāwera are the best ever. As far the custard square…. I make an absolutely delicious version but…. I guess that you will never get to try it.
Always blow on the Pie hahahahahahaha well done
😂😂😂😂
That's what she said
New Zealand pies are the best
always blow on the pie, omg.... safer communities together
Good old Invercargill!!! ❤
welcome back to New Zealand
Yeah
My favourite is the Seafood pie.....i live across the road from this pie shop and its always so busy.
If I lived over the road from this place.....I would be a fat bustard!!

Its awesome to see a American trying the best pies NZ has to offer , we love our yankee brothers
My favourite pie is plain mince, no cheese. Or a potato top mince pie. Never tried seafood but i know I'd like it.
Yum! Steak and pepper pie.
Mean aye bro. 😊
You haven't lived until you have tried eating a runny gas station pie [affectionately known as the "maggot pack"] while driving with one hand.😁
in a RX4
WTF ??? Petrol station maggots ???, never heard of it

@ ok, thanks for the education 😁😁
@@kerrymathers7439 there are soooo many Americanisms that we just don’t get… thank you.🙏
I've been waiting for this taste test. Fat Bastard pies looks like the best of all the pies I've seen.

My friend always teases me with pictures when he goes to Fat Bastard pies when in Invercargill for work.
They sell them off their website too. So, you can get them anywhere in the country.
Best tasting pies nil
If you pelted back all three of those pies and the square you wouldnt be able to move for the next twelve hours lol .
Just pick that custard square up a bite right into it dude. 😅 That's the only way to truly enjoy them. 👍
Have you had a Denheath custard square yet?
They are on a whole nother level!
What a great series. I'll have to try them next time I'm down there. Cheers buddy!
Hanmer Springs in Sth has Whitebait Pies. They are expensive.

Mince is human slang for ground up meat not NZ slang 😭
I'm glad you picked up on all the little details! I love NZ. Thanks for watching!

100% steak n cheese pie, best selling pie in NZ. Custard squares are awesome!
Had a steak and cheese pie. It was so disgusting. The cheese was definitely rancid. Never tried again.
Even the thought of cheese with red meat. Ugh!
