You have a JEWEL in John! He definitely knows what he’s talking about, has great input without being pushy, listens to you, but provides valuable input into decisions. I really loved when he said that your home will look “Linda Vader” which is how it’s supposed to look! Now THAT is a man who’s got it! We are individuals, not clones of some designer, and our homes should reflect that. Hooray for John!

I LOVE when John is on the video. He not only has good advice and listens, but he is so respectful when making suggestions giving you the opportunity to reach a solution after some thought. Love the idea of casement windows and YES a dutch door would be great. Can't wait for the video re the map/gallery wall. I have a real problem creating a natural look and not contrived. Can't wait to see what you do with the front 'closet' area where you were going to make the mud room. This is all coming together with great thought. Thank you, John, for visiting us here again. Thank you Linda and Stewart too ❤

I do love the bookcases on that wall. I had suggested the mudroom behind them ..really like that John wanted a mushroom in front of the window. I do like casement windows with storage under and small storage for hubs. Along with plants. I can see those visions...I am so glad you are engaging in great solutions ... can't wait for the finished look. Maps are a great way to add to the room. I have never been a fan of painted white walls but seems to be a solution in this case.

As John mentioned what he did - lay out the maps and such that you want on the wall - I'm hoping John might share his recent wall styling secrets with us. Yes, perhaps anchor it to the wall itself among the maps and such, therefore freeing up the table space. I feel funny commenting on someone else's styling decisions but tv's can really be problematic. I laughed out loud when John gave his thoughts on tv's in a cabinet ... it was so true and hilarious at the same time.

Love the TV on this wall. We recently replaced an old 42” flat TV with a slightly larger tv. Previously it sat on a long buffet. I had the new TV hung on the wall above the buffet. I love the free space on my buffet. If you decide to do this your table can become your book table.

Beautiful home and will look forward to watching the transformation of home and garden
You are such an inspiration !
Here’s my 2 cents. Front hall closet door is removed and becomes wonderful little bar space/and your “entertainment closet”. Cabinetry, wallpaper, lighting, glass shelving the works ! Show off your collection of entertainment wear , crystal and bar supplies.
I feel that front room should be a dining space and handy to have drinks and cutlery etc close by
Small round table at kitchen banquette , table for two for day to day dining .
What’s in the garage ? Would that not be the best place to showcase and store all the wellies, garden gloves, sun screen , hats etc ? Can you sub divide in the garage a small space to decorate and store all these items ?
No way would my dirty boots from the garden be stored in my living space ! And will become far to much clutter then in lithe great room .....just my 2 cents 😊

First thing I noticed walking into the room now, the “safari table”, beautifully styled with the hide draped over, the 2 x benches, then the whole room view just opened up! I love the table the tv is on but not for the tv. I think it sits out too far and the decor tends to look cluttered with the tv. I think your tv table should not be any wider than your bar table. But please know this is my opinion and I’m sure if you came to my home you would find things you would not agree with. It’s a home. Make it livable for you & your hubby. It is going to look beautiful! You have a beautiful and unique home.

Just what I wanted. That bookcase and tv placement! So, the mud room problem. Is that your garage we see a short way from that door? Is it possible to build a breeze way walk from there? With a small enclosed entryway at the family room entrance? Kind of like a small enclosed porch. That’s where the Dutch door could go. All your boots and hats, so cute.

Linda, you’re doing a fabulous job making this house your own. Thank you for bringing John Turman back as I just adore him and his expert advice. Please don’t concern yourself with making your bookshelves perfectly aligned as suggested by other viewers. They look lovely just as they are, the imperfectness adds to their charm. I do think having the television on a flat mount might look better with your gallery wall and maps. It will honestly bring it up a bit so you can better display your collections on that beautiful table. I think your zebra skin is hidden a bit as well. Perhaps drape it over the back of the sofa or on a wall somewhere? I love the animal skulls as well and you’ve got a great eye for displaying them. We actually have two cattle skulls hanging on our living room walls as well as a large wooden bed spring from an 1800’s full size bed. The small animal print stools I imagine were pulled out to accommodate your sitting with John to discuss things. When not in use will they tuck back further under the table so the area is not as busy? Just thoughts of mine. 😊 ♥️

I love hanging the antlers on the wall by the bookshelves. Putting your hats on them feels so whimsical. The idea of a gallery wall is fabulous for all the reasons you mentioned in the video! I can't wait to see that idea come to life. As you settle in to your storybook cottage, you may find yourself reimagining how you use furniture pieces, art, accessories, etc. I have a little corner display shelf that has held books and other things in a kitchen, a dining room in a different house, a library loft in a third house, and now in a bedroom corner. I liked it in every one of those very different spots. Your move is wonderful in a way that my moves were not. You moved within your community. You still have all your friends around you to help you enjoy your new home. What a great blessing.

I agree about the furniture polish comment :) and the clutter around the TV. I know it's a work in progress, but I think less is more in this case. With the TV you can't really have as much on that table as if it were just books. It's too busy.

Bravo, Linda and John, for reading everyone's suggestions given in the spirit of helpfulness. I've always said the number of opinions you get is proportional to the number of people you ask.
This video was helpful for me as I look around my space that needs refreshing. Since there's not much I can do beyond planning my buried garden I am energized to play indoors.
I found a website source for artwork on a large wall in my dining room (I'm leaning towards Renoir's still life strawberries) that sees lots of light. I'm worried about it fading with that much light. I have a west-facing sliding door, double east-facing windows and a door and the south is an open archway leading into the step-up kitchen. This is a converted breezeway between the house and garage, in fact the wall I seek to fill is on the garage wall with a solid access door, so a lot of vibration. The ceiling is vaulted and I am also considering adding wallpaper to the top half for interest. As you, Linda, I need to be aware of expenses because my pockets are shallow.
Stewart, do you have an assistant? I'm enjoying the different camera angles. I know at least one is stationery. I'm liking the channel's new look.

I was happy to hear JOhn say we want it to look Linda Vater. Because, I must say, I am worried you will not keep the Linda Vater look all of us followers love and associate with you. The house is a huge change , please don't lose your unique style too. I do think having an outlet on the mantel is great to maybe add a brass picture light over your wonderful focal painting for a soft glow at night

As a retired Interior Designer, Jon has given you invaluable advice. I always told clients "it's your home, but I won't let you make a mistake".
TVs on above fireplaces began in Calif where there are no mantels and very low fireplaces. Doesn't translate to most homes across the US. Also TVs on walls/arms remind me of hospital rooms - ugh!
Love the idea of mud room the under window - otherwise it's wasted space. I also thought of you doing a Dutch door...
When you do new windows here, you have the opportunity to add some softness by adding dead hang drapery (stationary side panels) and a Hunter Douglas type silhouette shade - it has veins between a shade that have varying degrees of opacity. This allows you to watch a movie during the day when your family is home, or watch the big game during the day while getting rid of the glare.
When not in use, the whole thing disappears into a head rail. There are tons of color and textures to choose from. Jon can show you examples. It can be motorized like your bath shade.
I love weighing in on design, however this channel (and others) has become a dating site (not with our usual bunch) and a site for scams (we are all aware of these) and makes me not want to comment.
I was actually shouting the word "BANQUETTE" while you were touring your new kitchen a few vids ago...
    Can't wait for more!!

Linda, thank you for such a great channel. I love gardening, thrifting, fashion, and home decor and mixing and matching all together. You do a great job of intertwining it all and showing us how each relates to the other. One thing you’ve mentioned in a couple videos lately is not purchasing an expensive or long term item based on an activity that is infrequent or may not happen at all. That was one thing my Mother taught me, but I found myself searching for a large dining table before the holidays and didn’t find what I wanted. I was sure I needed a large table for my family to sit at for holiday dinners two or three times a year. I really don’t have the extra space to walk around a large table every day. Remembering my Mothers motto, I purchased an 8’ folding table. I added a silencer, Moms linen table cloth and beautiful decor in the center. It worked perfectly! I can keep my round table in my dining area the rest of the time. I’m glad you’ve reminded us of this motto, too. Thank you.

I love it! And John's suggestions for the boot tray under a long table are genius! Its not like all your boots will be stored there, but they will need to sit in that boot tray after being outside. I love the chair there, I love the coat rack. I love the antlers on the wall, and I am so looking forward to seeing those maps on the tv wall. I love the idea of a book table, but putting the TV on the wall slightly higher may be too high for viewing pleasantly. Its all coming together, simply beautiful!!!

Everything is coming along beautifully. Thanks for allowing your RUclips audience for following along. I was thinking that maybe clearing out or partially clearing out a cubby in your bookcase, close to the back door, might be a workable area for your husband to drop his keys, etc.

Linda, I would slide the bookshelf to the left towards the light switch, because the coat rack in crouding the door & mount the TV highter on the wall & move the TV table infront of the window, even if you have to shorten the legs a little to keep gardening stuff under. Maybe include shelving under it. Or not. Lee

As I have told my son throughout the years when he asked me what I thought of an idea he had, my response was usually “nothing is written in stone” if you decide against it later you can go a different direction. Just follow your dreams and see where they will take you. No harm no foul.

Tip for sticking or stuck wooden drawer. Once you get it open, take it out all the way and use a bar of soap and rub it on the areas that glide on each other both on the bottom of the drawer, and on the base of which the drawer moves along. It will move like butter afterwards. I have always used ivory soap bars, but I believe any kind of soap will do as long as it’s a bar of soap.
