I first heard Jarvis Cocker play this on 6 music a few months back and it's a tune that make you stop what you're doing and simply listen in awe and wonder. An instant all time classic. As Geoff Barrow from Portishead might say "Why can't people make this kind of stuff nowadays?!"
She really makes this song her own. It’s almost like history has kind of erased this song. It was a huge hit in its time, but after that, it was pretty much never played on radio or played attention to or popular or really anything ever again. It’s never had any kind of retrospective look or re-evaluation or any kind of resurgence in attention or popularity at all and has never been used in any other form of entertainment to this day. Even on Spotify, there are three tracks of the studio version of this song, but they’re all buried deep..and nowhere near his most played songs. On a surface level, it’s kinda easy to see why: unlike other soul hits of the time like “Hold On! I’m Comin’” or “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” which have a timeless quality to them and are still widely loved and famous and popular and celebrated to this day, by contrast, “Love is a Hurtin’ Thing” is unfortunately very much a product of its time. That mostly comes down to the actual composition; the lyrics are simple but beautiful and universal, but the arrangement is characterized by very dramatic orchestration and a very emotionally intense, maybe even theatrical kind of vocal delivery, even tho the emotion is genuine. This kind of thing was very much en vogue in the mid-60s, but it’s very strictly mid-60s, and it leads to the sound and structure of the song being very much stuck in that era. This is probably a big reason why nobody remembers the song anymore, it’s rather dated and hasn’t aged well composition-wise, and it’s intense and dramatic emotion can come off as melodramatic and overwrought by many ppl today, which is sad because that doesn’t negate its impact at all, even if it’s a dated song, it’s still a beautiful song that deserves the re-evaluation and resurgence in attention and really the due that it’s never gotten. Thank you for everything, Lou, R.I.P. 🪦🥹❤️🩹
For every little kiss there's a little heartache. For every single thrill there's another heartbreak. For all in love the going is tough. Yes, love is a hurtin' thing.
Thinking about whether I will ever be able to lie down in bed, and listen to this track with a person that I really like, but that is struggling with opiod adiction and got into an outpatient rehab a couple of days ago
I was at a bar in Stockholm back in 2005 and the bartenders were in charge of the music. It was at an old converted movie theater where the bar was in the middle of the room and he was playing a white label re-edit of this track. He told me what record store to go to to find a copy. I had that 12” for years before I learned what the original was from one of my heavy duty record collector friends.

the intro music oddly reminds me of a slowed The Rapture - In the Grace of your Love
It's so sad that she was undiscovered until so late into her life. she died a few years after.
it was probably because the Big Brother didn't approve of her.

Someone needs to do an edit with an extended intro. Similar to Danny Krivit's Cymande rework.
