When I was 8 years old, my 3rd grade teacher told my mom, "She dances to a different song." I loved that teacher. She loved me just the way I was. I found out I'm on the spectrum when I was 51 years old.

Excellent video. I am an autistic woman aged 29. I can say Dr. Atwood is one of the rare individuals ( including most professionals! ) who does understand our psyche. It is honestly very relaxing to just listen Tony’s videos and to feel understood by a neurotypical person. I don’t think most people realize how rare that actually is. We will go through our entire lives decoding social rules and applying them to make true friends, only to still have our ways of communicating constantly misunderstood by those friends. Within the friend groups we are somehow still ostracized. It is really less taxing to just be with other autistics. It feels like walking through life speaking a different language. Anyways thank you for putting out such a spot on informative video. It has been comforting to listen to and I’m sure I will circle back here.

Thanks Dr. Attwood. I'm autistic Level 1 / Apsperger's. I also have an IQ in the top 2% (Stanford Binet). Probably why I wasn't diagnosed until my late 50s. I'd like to see more research into people at the extreme high end of the IQ scale. I suspect a lot of the stereotypes around high intellegence are related to autism and a very high prevalence amoung the intellectually gifted. My life has been somewhat hellish due to the sensory and social aspects of my autism. These led to severe anxiety and depression, Decades of it. I suspect it was the stress of masking and repeated failures at careers. Ostacization and bullying didn't help either.
I'm a lisenced architect and was a college professor for many years. My intellectual gifts and intense interests and mastery of these helped me mask my difficulties, but eventually I suffered a total shutdown and withdrawl in my mid 40s. I finally know why and your talks have helped me understand my condition and it's impacts.
One last thing - this might sound trivial or that I'm spliting hairs, but saying someone "has" autism is like saying someone "has" homosexuality or Asian-ness or gender. I AM autistic. It's not something I "have" like the flu. My autism is only pathological to the extent I'm not understood or accomodated and supported by society, or worse, outright abused because of my differences. Autism is intrinsic to my conciouness, personality, and experience of the world.
It's central to my very nature nature and humanity, and cannot be seperated from it.
I think it's important to speak in these "identity" terms about autism rather than framing it liguistically as something "other", pathological, and seperate from our humanity.
    Thanks again.

Very well said. Similar here. Also was found to be highly gifted on the classical IQ test (Stanford Binet) as a child and I was told later that I had traits landing me in the autism spectrum. Later as a teen some teachers wanted me checked. I was interviewed by the counsellor and evaluated for IQ but also checked to see if I was on the autism spectrum. It was decided not to add the label ASD because of the highly gifted IQ, because it was thought that I could manage, but it was noted that it was a borderline decision. Now I can see why I’ve had trouble. I was able to manage for a long time, but eventually the situation has gone into overwhelm. I can see the patterns and in some way it’s reassuring to find ’m not the only one (of course I wouldn’t be but to see there are quite a few people having challenges) and to understand better what was happening. In retrospect I’d say some family members likely would have been evaluated as autistic, had that been common to do. It’s been rough, often as people don’t follow through or don’t really mean what they say when I take them literally, and they often don’t remember either, and think I can’t when in fact I used to remember verbatim, and even now that I’m not doing so well and have been sick, I still remember quite well what has been said, in particular on important matters. It’s hard to plan to do things with others when to me they are frivolous. I guess I’m not picking u0 clues on the lack of sincerity but can’t understand why things are said when not meant, or why somebody who took another person at their word would be considered the one who is wrong. In short, many social challenges. I’ve come near to giving up. Despite supposedly being bright, I’m not bright enough when prolonged situations have built up, and maybe was too much of an idealist, that I believed in people. Regarding IQ, we’d thin’ people with high IQ would be fast. I’ve found it takes me more time to do and figure out things, but when I do the answer tends to be correct. The people in my gifted classes mostly seemed much faster at figuring out problems. Looking at patterns is interesting. That has helped. Overall though I’m now in overwhelm and exhausted.

@UCI-6BulYzBUZeeQKlqYcLjg Jesus - you just told my story verbatim, except that autism wasn't discovered until I was in my late 50s. I'm still wrapping my head around things, but I'm more optomistic about the future than I've ever been, because I know who and what I am now. I'm being as kind as possible to that poor bastard.
      Myself.
...and anyone I call a freind needs to kind to him too, or they are out of my life. I don't have the energy to deal with angry, resentful, or hateful, judgemental people. I'm lucky at this point in my life not to have to. I'm direct and open, and I need the same from anyone close to me now.

When I brought my first born home from the hospital, she started panting anxiously on the ride home. It was definitely like she wanted to cry but didn't know how. She still hyperventilates like that, but the crazy thing is, she stims to the same CADENCE as that panting the first day on the way home from the hospital. Then, by the time she was 4 months and started batting at toys, she would sit and spin the same toy for hours everyday. I didn't know anything about autism or babies and I was just glad she was entertained. Yeah. She's autistic. Didn't figure it out until she was four, but it was there all along.

Thank you, Dr. Attwood. I have watched a couple webinars recently with ADHD experts whose approach left me feeling greatly diminished. Your descriptions have been helpful in figuring myself out at age 61, and I can sense your kindness, which is not an emotion I easily perceive. I noticed that when talking about learning to read emotions by whatever means, you mentioned mostly negative emotions, and this makes sense to me, as I am much more likely to perceive those emotions in others, whether rightly or wrongly.

I love learning from you and all the new things that come out about autism.
In the last 10 yrs I have had 2 grandchildren diagnosed and a third with autististic traits who's parents refuse to label them. This has bought awareness to my husband that he too has autism. As did his sister and mother. He has been able to live a very full and productive life but now in his 60s and being a carer for me , he is finding it alot harder with all the emotional stuff associated with a chronically ill partner. He is has been amazing with 3 careers and a wonderful albeit quirky father.
Thank you for bringing awareness, we are getting there.

Dr Attwood - Do you agree that there needs to be a public health campaign alerting parents to the dangers of drinking alcohol in pregnancy or when planning a pregnancy? I am talking about Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which would also equally account for other children in the family having the symptoms of ASD. These symptoms including ADHD, are linked to this environmental factor also. However, parents are not fully aware of the capability of alcohol (a toxin) to cause neurological defects in their unborn children. This is why, i think we are seeing an exponential growth in the number of cases.

As for employment, he hit the nail on the head, I enjoy working in solitude. Give me a clearly defined goal, and leave me alone to do it. It's funny how he mentioned park ranger and the animals, I prefer animals over people, in addition to my day job, I rescue, raise, and release orphaned baby squirrels. I will do it till the day I die. My home sees at least a dozen orphans per year on their way back to where they were destined to be from the beginning, the wild

This is wonderful Tony. I’m curious to know if you see correlations between ASD and body-focused repetitive behaviours / OCPD and addictions?
As a (so far) self-diagnosed Asperger adult in her 40s, I use BFRB’s at the end of the day as a way to release built up energy from masking all day. I also share a lot of traits with OCPD.
    Greetings 🙂

@@recoveringsoul755 you could have a neurological problem that causes seizures in stressful situations there's different types of medical diagnoses that can explain that but at the same time you also could be a person who is slightly on the spectrum but also has a secondary medical condition that causes you to have to slow down because you will have a seizure epilepsy.
