  • This is a review of the Mack-Brass 421 3/4 sized CC tuba with the 16" bell. It is pretty much a copy of the Yamaha YCB-621 CC tuba, with an added fifth-valve and a large bell. I was hoping that this horn would be great, and it certainly is!
    You can order this horn at www.mackbrass.com
    This is not a paid endorsement. I bought this tuba on my own. I hope that everyone loves this video.
    No tubas were hurt or injured in the making of this film.
    Love God, your neighbor, and your tuba! In that order, please...
    Have a great day!
    Dylan

    Thanks for the review, Dylan! Seems like this horn is purpose built for chamber/quintet playing. It seems to be a top notch horn for that purpose.

      @tubadylan  4 года назад +2

      That it would be! Wish I had mentioned that in the video. After all, Chuck Daellenbach had one custom made for that purpose. By Yamaha, of course.

      tubadylan Chuck’s sound on that horn was remarkable. Sounded like a miniaturized version of Jake’s York but appropriate for a brass quintet. Sure you can bark this horn, but have you found it easier to round the sound with the extra CC tubing and large bell?

    • @tubadylan
      @tubadylan  4 года назад +2

      @@mpmcd81 Yes, the sound is a little rounder than the smaller bell. Just slightly more mellow in tone.

    Kanstul is still made in the USA (California I believe) to my knowledge. Heard they're good horns but never had the chance to play one.

    • @tubadylan
      @tubadylan  4 года назад +3

      Unfortunately, Kanstul has gone out of business. Much of their machinery was sold off to BAC trombones and trumpets in Kansas City. Who knows? Maybe they’ll start making tubas at some point.

    Come to think of it, Roger Bobo played the Kraft Encounters II on a Miraphone 184- even smaller than THIS horn. If you listen to the LA Philharmonic 1971 recording of Holst’s Planets, particularly the low E at the end of Uranus where Roger Bobo played on his 184 and Tommy Johnson played on his 185, nobody has EVER sounded like that. Sheer raw power sound. This sounds like something in that vein but I think it’s more American leaning. I bet that horn could bury an orchestra if one laid waste, and nobody would see it coming from that horn.

    • @tubadylan
      @tubadylan  4 года назад

      I don't know if the 184 was smaller than this tuba, but close. I played a 185 all through high school and loved it. I wish I had never sold that tuba.

    • @mpmcd81
      @mpmcd81 4 года назад +3

      tubadylan The 184 (at least in modern production) has a 14.96” bell and a 0.709 bore in the rotors, which are located closer to the bell than a piston set where the lead pipe just goes straight in. The 185 that is in modern production has a 16.5” bell and 0.740” bore in the rotors. I think that you’re about halfway between the 184 and 185. You have some of the directness of the 621 series with some of the resonance of the YFB 822. Your sound is actually pretty similar in timbre on this one and your 822, but I bet the response is a bit different and the fingerings are nicer in the contrabass range.
      When Roger Bobo went to the YFB 821 later in his solo career I loved the sound. Still the power sound, of course, but it had some roundness to it as well. The core was always there, but he developed a nice corona around the core. Very addictive sound if you ask me.
      I think a lot of younger players forget how groundbreaking Roger Bobo really was. You, of course, remember. Bobo was equal parts ballerina and sledgehammer with his tuba. I don’t think he ever needed anything larger than his 188, and I thought he was stupendous with the 184. A lot of pro players are starting to revisit Bobo’s wisdom in equipment selection, playing more conservatively sized equipment. Alan Baer is using his Ursus a lot.

    @tubadylan -- Now that you've had the TU-421S for 3-ish years, what is your assessment of the horn? Do you use it regularly? Occasionally? Seldom? How usable is it? Easy playing? Good intonation? Decent sound for a 3/4 size tuba? I'm curious, as I'm seriously considering buying this model for use in quintet sized groups, and I'm interested in a 3/4 size horn. Thanks!

    • @tubadylan
      @tubadylan  Год назад +1

      I really do still like it, and think it would make an excellent quintet tuba. The intonation is VERY good for a CC tuba, and it is very easy to play. I'm glad I went with the wider bell option, because I think it broadens up the sound just enough to be usable in medium and medium-large ensembles. It also does well as a recording instrument!

    I think i have the most difficult tuba to play. I didn't pick it up in 30 yrs. But it never sounded right. Where do i go from here. It is a 3 valve but it doesn't have the double turn on the top tube. Followed some lessons but the notes are not the same. arrrggghhh. Feels like a wasted childhood of struggling to follow the orchestra. :(

    • @hthomasmcgrady
      @hthomasmcgrady Год назад

      Bad Company? I know you can't be referring to Mack Brass as we do supply parts at no cost whenever they are needed. We have been in business for almost 13 years now and have sold well over 16 to 17 thousand instruments and most importantly we have had less than 10 returns since inception. So when I see a comment like this I like to think that you have never dealt with us or know anything about our company and our standards. We don't sell a huge selection of instruments but what we do sell can be play and are played at the pro level and many pro's currently play our instruments. Not sure but please explain what you mean.
