The waves aren't as strong and devastating because the force was broken by the coral reefs.... Now, see, how important they are, among other things. So we should really, seriously try our best to save and rehabilitate them
Actually the tsunami went right through the islands of the Maldives...their low level of land is what saved them....the surge just went over and through... If the land mass was higher it would have caused a higher surge...in the Japanese tsunami the various bays and esturies funnelled the tsunami wave and the water rose to 10-15 metres.
I like how ppl are just recording and standing around like it's nothing. Meanwhile I'm watching this online and I'm panicking and my anxiety is going through the roof.

And after tsunami gone, there's thousand dead body found on the street/anywhere, and it took several months just to burried all those dead body. And it took years to recovery all the infrastucture on aceh...
I've heard about the tsunami hitting the Maldives, but I've never actually seen it. These guys were lucky, even though the waves were not that high, the tide was pretty heavy. It amazes me how nature works.
I was on 'Lohifushi' island at the time. In a hut right on the beach. The force of the water smashed our front door down and smashed the whole room up. As previous posts have said, it wasn't the size of the wave that was the issue, the force of the surge made it difficult to stay on your feet, especially with all the debris (water was about waist deep) The fear was not knowing how deep it was going to get and having no high ground to run to. The highest part of the island was only 1 metre!
This should be the youtube video of the year. You must be very brave to have filmed this up close. I would have ran a mile. Thankyou for showing the world what a tsunami is really all about.
This particular island may have been slightly sheltered by another island which may have helped "break up" a huge wave and made the high water arrive more like a storm surge. The Maldives are so beautiful.

There is no high ground in the Maldives. It's one of the things they are famous for, being the flattest country on Earth. It consists very flat islands made almost entirely of sand on gentle slopes into the sea, which explains why the tsunami didn't rise up into very tall waves like it did when it hit rocky coasts with steep inclines.

Considering the highest point in the Maldives is only ~2,5 m from the seafloor, climbing a tree is pretty much all you can do there in the case of a tsunami I would imagine... ...or you could get on a boat.

My condolences to the family-members who lost beloved ones😔 Life is so short and precious and we should be thankful for every single day in our lifetime! ❤
It's not really a wave but more the ocean just rising and making what you feel is safe ground the bottom of a rough sea (with objects floating around like projectiles).
Reminds me of the nuclear testing tsunamis in the Pacific of the 50s. Soldiers had to climb the trees as everything washed away. Water receded as fast as it came.
Thank u for this video, as often people do not believe that even places that resemble Paradise can be victim of natural disasters, so as much as Maldives seem heavenly only God can stop such disasters ,,,,n in most cases whilst we are so taken away by the beautiful resorts on the sea , its imperative to also take into account that often sea as a " life" of its own ,,,n when its angered or revengeful it just destroys anything n everything in its path having no mercy ,,,,,

Dude! What did you do? Climb a tree to film this? You are one brave, and lucky guy! Great vid, though.
And I am amazed how many people do not know how a tsunami works. Maybe they should learn. It might save their lives someday.
Luckily for him a large wave didn't break there like how it hit the other islands of Maldives.
Considering the highest point in the Maldives is only ~2,5 m from the seafloor, climbing a tree is pretty much all you can do there in the case of a tsunami I would imagine...
...or you could get on a boat.
Yeah, you could get on a boat, but some of those tsunami videos I've seen have taken trees, boats and buildings. Guess this fellow was just lucky.
itsnotthesamething God has Protected him!
WoW that is some amazing footage. Scary to see how quickly it can happen.
Seeing this in 2020 in December i still feel at the end of every year we see some horrible things
Fun fact: Maldives is the lowest country in the world, With the highest natural place being 4 Meters off the ground. So maybe if a Tsunami gets a bit too high... Correct me if im wrong. -Guy from Maldives
Holding my breath while watching this. This is terrifying.
This is Sonevafushi Island Resort and Spas. Six Senses property. Some one has said its Fun Island. If you see the girl who is in the video wearing a purple uniform she is the girl from Souvenir shop. I know as i was there on this side with the guy who took this video.
i dont think ull have to worry abt the language .. but mostly if anyone can speak in English ..but if u r comin on vacation then have no worries...:)
Meu Deus que pavor!! E ainda tem gente que fica perto e não tem medo de morrer!!
Oh i'm so scared..! The guy who took the video is so brave.
+myre dequilla Not really brave, when you hear people died from natural disasters some are doing this, the water could of easily suddenly got even higher and then dragged him back with it
maybe he wants to drown ....
More like stupid...
Im from maldives and let me tell you some advise, btw im in grade 6 and im currently failing math but....thoes waves arnt as dangerous as you seem.Sure your country might have high waves at a time like that but here,at this time its like normal for you.Trust me..😊
Well, what i ment is for here.A tsunami here in Maldives is the same thing in portuguis or whatever how you spell that is the same thing with a flood.
Nice Video
You Are Such A Brave Man....!!!👍👍
And Salute To Your Madness
As horrifying as this was, the beautiful blue water still looked soothing. I hope those poor souls managed to put their lives back together.
Awesome. 💙 T.E.N.
That water mass is powerful what a destructive sight. I hope they got tsunami warnings in the area now because I would hate to be caught in that
Maledives nearly drowned completely in 2004.
The whole disaster is so heartbreaking😞
Over 250.000 souls lost and my heart is aching while I think of the suizides after the tsunami-desaster!
My condolences to the family-members who lost beloved ones😔
Life is so short and precious and we should be thankful for every single day in our lifetime!
❤
You know it's a bad situation when fish are committing suicide
Underrated comment right here.
Hopefully you are joking. Those fish were left by the tsunami as it receded from the islands.
We can say that fishes drown in air.
It's not really a wave but more the ocean just rising and making what you feel is safe ground the bottom of a rough sea (with objects floating around like projectiles).
Just wondering where was he standing while filming this?
I think he had climed a coconut tree
Donald Valdes that’s also my first thought
he was literally standing on the beach while recording it lol
Isn’t that like thousands of km from the initial start point? That’s insane.
My God! Weren't you afraid at all?? I've always wanted to see this area. It's so beautiful!
Top of my bucket list too!!🌷
At marker 2:01, What was that water bubbling up from? way in the background.
Probably hit a small rocky island or something. They splash pretty high up.
David Gaynor a big wave if you ask me . they are high in the sky
Reminds me of the nuclear testing tsunamis in the Pacific of the 50s. Soldiers had to climb the trees as everything washed away. Water receded as fast as it came.
2021 still watching this amazing cameraman
That looked very scary, you were brave to stand there and film it. Good job the water didn't get too high.
Hope the people on the Island were ok.
@strlet not a lot, you?
Thank u for this video, as often people do not believe that even places that resemble Paradise can be victim of natural disasters, so as much as Maldives seem heavenly only God can stop such disasters ,,,,n in most cases whilst we are so taken away by the beautiful resorts on the sea , its imperative to also take into account that often sea as a " life" of its own ,,,n when its angered or revengeful it just destroys anything n everything in its path having no mercy ,,,,,
Ya estamos año 2020 😜👌👍🏻
Sayyidina Zaid bin Arqam r.a. meriwayatkan bahawa Rasulullah s.a.w. bersabda,"Sesiapa yang mengucapkan Laailaahaillallah dengan ikhlas akan dimasukkan ke dalam syurga." Baginda s.a.w. ditanya,"Apakah tanda keikhlasan ITU?" Baginda s.a.w. menjawab "Bahawa kalimah ITU mencegah dirinya daripada melakukan perbuatan yg diharamkan oleh Allah s.w.t."
Hadis riwayat Tabarani
That's f*ING scary
Someone enjoying psunami like this...😂😂😂meanwhile my heartbeat increasing with every wave....while the cameraman enjoying extra perks like fishes....
It's not a job of weak hearted man to capture this dreadful incident for a long time. Thanks
good job and good vid..very brave from you!!..many people thinks that a tsunami comes with a hughe wave like "the day after tomorrow" but as your vid and the ones shown in Indonesia..they come as a very big displacement of water
You got balls, I'll give you that.
How was this video recorded!??. Wasn't he in deep waters n panicking!.. How did he manage to stay out of trouble.. Really really surprising
Wen water is receeding like dat it means dat the real tsunami is cumin
Its...when and that and coming go back to school guy
kimmy siewah I put cumin in my recipes...
I never liked cumin personally. Reminds me of bad chili.
Great grammar
Hmm cum
Wow you’re so calm. I would’ve ran away.
Not sure why the Maldives were spared the much bigger tsunami surges that struck all across the Indian Ocean, even areas further away. Actually I've seen other tsunami video from the Maldives that was much worse than this. You guys were extremely lucky!
This guy who filming The scene was OLIMPYC GOLD MEDAL Champion 2004
Thank you RUclips… after 15 years.
