I´m a solo traveler for a couple of years now but I prefer hotels over hostels. When I went to London last year, I booked 2 walking tours and met 2 other female solo travelers. We had lunch after the first tour, the next we hang out and visited Sky Garden and on my last night we had dinner together. That was fun!
Just took my third trip to London, stayed in East London for the first time and loved it. It was so much more interesting than the areas I've previously stayed in and forgotten the names of. Amazing dining options.
Jess I found you quite patronising to some questions here which may seem patently obvious to you but for anxious first time visitors (not me) are genuine concerns. Keep your humility and good grace.
London's the first place where I have had no need to withdraw cash. It's also the first place where I have seen more 'No cash, cards only' signs than the other way around. London has mastered the contactless card system to the extent few other cities (if any) have. This coming from a first time visitor who has spent 4 days in London.
I spent a week there in March and didn’t touch a single note or coin. Only time I wished I’d had cash is to tip a tour guide. It was a bit awkward to walk away with that unresolved, but (1) as with other things it’s appreciated but not nearly as expected, and (2) we caught up later, so all’s well that ends well.
Some of those questions were just downright.....challenging. My son and I will be visiting London for a week in August. If I see you, I'll make sure to say hello. Your videos have been an incredible help to us!
Getting the Eurostar from Kings Cross St Pancreas International is quite easy, and safe. When I was living in London, I went to Paris for a day trip on a few occasions. Not impossible but tiring. The train is 3h 30m and you can walk from Gare De Nord station in Paris to the Louvre in 30m, but you should book at the Louvre as it’s very popular.
Yep, just did that day trip but just be sure you know how to get around and back on the train. We don't read/speak French and got yelled at for it. No one helped us.
In London last week, I noticed signs in Tube stations warning of "gadget grabbers," i.e., people who snatch your phone right out of your hand and run away with it, so I figured it was safer to use my Oyster card and keep my phone in my jacket pocket.
I’m from Massachusetts. I was in London with my 11-year-old daughter earlier this month. We had our phones out constantly for photos, booking reservations, map apps, etc. No issues whatsoever. London feels much safer to me than anywhere in the US.
Hi Jess, thanks for your channel, My wife and I spent our 35th wedding anniversary there we stayed at the Hilton Kensington London at Holland Park, it was the most wonderful trip and we used a lot of your useful tips. We mastered the tube, we used our phones to pay our fair on both the tube or bus. Once again thank you so much.
I was just back from UK and Ireland today, I only paid for public toilet once in my 20 days there. Malls, pubs, musems etc, all of these you can use for free.
You seem annoyed that you're doing a video. I hope you continue because you're the main reason I watch your channel. It's your style and presentation that keeps me interested. It's the same reason I watch a couple of cruise channels despite never having been on a cruise and having no intent on going on one--the presenters are engaging and entertaining.
Jess, so good to see you again. For someone that has been watching you from the beginning and used your services, some of these questions are humorous. Best of luck!
Hey Jess! Thank you so much to you and your crew for all the tips and advice when traveling to London. I recently travelled to London for the second time in early May. All your tips made my trip more memorable and awesome.
In London we only withdraw enough cash for (region appropriate) tips - for hotel staff and some cabbies prefer cash if you have it. We take the tube 85% of the time but sometimes you need a cab 😊
I visited London with my girlfriend last year, and your guides were head and shoulders above anything else I could find. We are now visiting Australia this year and I wish they had their own version of you.
just picked up your 6 day guide and appreciating the pragmatic info. i live in San Francisco and have traveled extensively but will be heading to london for a solo trip (and a bit of taylor) so i'm appreciating the good info. also, any links to best gluten free places/dishes and fun places for a 60 yr old gay woman! thanks much. great work.
The Eurostar is totally safe! But to go to the Louvres, you need to take the RER or the metro and switch at Gare de l'est or Châtelet-Les-Halles. You need to watch for pickpocket, but it's not "unsafe".
The info on the under 11 are free on the tube is invaluable. I've got 6 people I'm responsible for on our trip to London in August, and been struggling trying to find the best way to manage that, since I'm only bringing two cards with me and obviously wanting to limit the Oyster Card expense.
Don't forget most museums and galleries are free! A great way to keep kiddies entertained, along with river and park walks! Have a great stay! (If the centre is too busy for your gang then spend time in Hampstead Heath or Richmond Park)
@@AM-dz2sh Thank you! We've got lots on the books during our visit and are actually staying in East Sheen (had to get out from the center of London to find affordable accommodations for six people), so have some plans for morning walks at Richmond Park.
I did laundry! Boswell laundry on Boswell Street. It's near A40 and Southampton row. You can buy a tide pod from the owner too. But pack your own fabric softener sheet. I chatted with the nicest local who also helped me with the machines. Bring cash.
Also, about zoning, you touched on a bit ... watch when you're booking accommodation. You find a place and it's reasonable but it's zone 5. It's a longer trip to the sites and more expensive. We booked in Tooting but if we'd stayed just a few stops earlier, we would have been zone 2.
It's fun, but can get super crowded. It's also very expensive! We suggest lots of fun alternate things to do here: loveandlondon.com/category/festive-season/
Why is Buckingham palace closed in November. I mean ok I get it. But are the gardens that are open worth the cost ? Should be view and admire from afar ?
I always enjoy London. I will be back again in a couple months. I love how easy it is to get about on the Tube. And thank you so much for the toilet guide LOL
Hello Jess! I will be in London from Montreal with my kids June 10-20! Heck, maybe we'll cross paths. I noticed that you do not mention in any of your guides (e.g., your 6-day Itinerary) anything about where we can see ancient Roman ruins. Can I suggest you add this on your next updates ?
Visit the Mithraeum!!! Or the Billingsgate Roman House & Baths, I prefer the former.) I also suggest booking a Tour, where they can tell you the history; as you walk between the sites that are scattered across the City of London. (Different to London City. Which they will of course cover off.) :)
A very important question whuch you will be fab at highlighting is which rail airport links acceot contactless and Oystet. The Stansted Exoress does not accept Oyster and contactless. Be fab and list which links do accept Oyster and contactless and which don't. Such things need repeating.
People who try to use contactless on the Stansted Express get a very big fine. A ticket must be bought each time. Contactless can be used to pay for the ticket but an actuall ticket must be bought. Lovely to see you presentibg as often as you like. Your collegues are also fab. 🙂
Hi Jess! So glad to have you back, you have been missed ! Great information and will be very helpful when I visit. Hopefully, we will see you on more videos in the near future.
I suspect the Louvre question is about the Eurostar. I’ve heard some stories about tourist questions. “What can you see in the tunnel?” is common enough that it’s one of the FAQs on Eurostar’s website. Real answer: nothing really, just the inside of a concrete tunnel. (I would be snarky but someone from the Great Plains may actually have reached adulthood having never driven through a tunnel.) I do wonder what those visitors expected though. A light show, perhaps a futuristic see-through tunnel so they could watch seals swim by? Seriously though, safety-wise they may have heard about that train that got stuck in 2022 and they’re wondering if that’s common.
so happy you are back!! Bern to London a month ago, after watching nearly all of your videos, and it helped me so much! Thanks a lot😊 btw- didn‘t use ANY cash- first cashless holiday, great in London!
