We’ve all cried those same tears on our first watches (and each and every watch to be fair)
In '94 i cried like a little girl at the end. Leon is one of the best films, scripts, art direction, camera work and actors.
When Leon open the door at the start to Matilda the light shines on her face, symbolic of her life being saved from corrupt police. At the end when Leon comes to exit, the light shines on his face. That piano when Leon is shot in the back. The gentle music plays with Matilda walking down the street with the plant, thinking that is end of the film. Cuts back to Leon on the ground, the drug addicted police officer doesn't know Leon last breath has the trick. It was getting rid of the corrupt police and dying in one I was weeping just like her. I have seen criminalcontent's other reactions and when I saw she was watching Leon I knew she would feel that emotional ending.
Leon is the "international" version. The Professional is the edited version for dumb "Americans."
It makes me so happy that you recognized leon not recripating her infatuation. He kept it father daughter love. it's brilliantly done.
Yeah. Thank god Reno refused to accept Luc Besson's initial idea of Leon reciprocating.

I do see Leon's affection as more Master/Pupil but otherwise agree. She's a bright student and helping him grow as well, and their emotional arc has the same feel as a martial arts movie to me.
But it is definitely a bond that has nothing to do with romance on his end. Leon is so emotionally crippled by his tragic youth that I think he's killed that part of himself.
On her side, Matilda is confusing the lack of anxiety she feels being safe for the first time with Leon as love, and Leon pretty much tells her that in the stomach-ache scene.

This is lowkey one of the best films of all time

Natalie was legitimatley 12 years old when this was filmed. An insanely brilliant performance.
i remember seeing this when it came out and pointing at natalie portman and saying "that little girl is gonna be somebody"

Mathilda terrified, desperate and crying at Leon's door when her whole family has just been murdered was worth an Oscar by itself.
Also, I love the fact that both main character's final words in this movie were each others names.

@@wasteoftimehere Every man with a family thinks about what he would do to protect his family. There are those of us who would die for them. You can choose to take it in a bizarre direction, or realize that men identify with Leon’s sacrifice and is what we would call a “noble death” if there even is one. The fact that you can’t grasp this, shows your lack of empathy and maturity.
Maybe learn some compassion before you go around judging people.

I've heard once the quote "Nobody plays a villain as Gary Oldman" and this movie is one of the main reasons!!!
You can take that as a point of view, but I think Willem Dafoe is in the same league (his role as Bobby Peru in Wild at Heart as just one example).
However, Gary Oldman definitely belongs in the top league of movie villains.
Catch him in a brilliant series about poor relations of MI5 in _Slow horses,_ 3 series available now and 4th coming shortly. You will thank me for it. He doesn't play a villain, but the most repellent hero probably in all of history.
A lot of people sadly misinterpret the relationship between Leon and Mathilda as if Leon reciprocates her love for him, so I'm glad you noticed he doesn't. He loves her, but as a daughter, not as a romantic partner

To be fair, Luc Besson is pretty sus on that front, I wouldn't write off the intentions so quickly. Pregnant 15 y/o wife at 30. Some of the cut scenes from this movie are pretty weird.

In writer/director Luc Besson's original version of the screenplay, they did end up having sex. Natalie Portman's parents threatened to pull her from the film if they didn't change it.
The woman in the sheets in the first assassination scene is Besson's second wife, Maïwenn, who he met when she was 12, left his first wife and started dating Maïwenn when she was 15 and he 32, and gave birth at 16. In the DVD extras for León (aka The Professional), Maïwenn said that the film is based on her relationship with Besson.
They married the same year she gave birth, but he left her 4 years later for Milla Jovovich during the production of his next film, The Fifth Element. (Maïwenn is also in The Fifth Element; she played the Diva Plavalaguna, the blue opera-singing alien.)
I like to consider her infatuation with Leon a reaction to her family getting killed, herself nearly dying and now living with a hit-man. I mean that trauma has to result in some acting out at least.

More proof the 90's were the golden age of film. It's actually called "Leon". The added "The Professional" for the US.
It was originally released in the U.S. as just "The Professional", without Leon in the title.

The vent scene with Natalie Portman, it shatters my heart every time. Her performance is top notch for any actor of any age of all time.
Natalie Portman's best role! I've never been a fan of her acting in big budget blockbusters, but she's so good in smaller, more independent films, and in this one in particular she absolutely steals every scene. A revelation!

When Portman gets a good script and director, she shines. When she’s stuck with a crappy director and a crappy script (like in Star Wars), she can only do the best she can. She was outstanding in “V for Vendetta”.
She's been outstanding in everything but the "prequels that shall not be named".

Let's not forget _Le Femme Nikita,_ the movie that spawned a Canadian TV series, an American TV series...as well as an American remake.

@@kirk1701 Coby and Besson's Nikita are a perfect match. The remake, Point of No Return, also makes a nice comparison, and one cannot lose with either Deneuve or Bancroft.
Luc Besson had Reno over to dinner to tell him that he'd written a starring role for him. It was in gratitude for his participation in his earlier film La Femme Nikita. Another brilliant watch!

Gary Oldman scared the shit out of me in this movie. What a great actor.
leon is one of our favorite film in france we love him so much , the first time we see him it was in a movie call " nikita " first time we see " the cleaner "... :)
Coby's reactions were even more a roller coaster than the final third of the film!
Fun Fact: Natalie Portman's mother was with the film crew watching every single scene Natalie was in and read all of Natalie's lines before shooting to make sure the director would not sneak in anything suggestive over her head.
It's called full S & S, meaning a parent or guardian has full Sight & Sound of the child at all times while in the studio. & I wouldn't have it any other way. Sometimes a parent hovers & directs the child, 'smile', 'sit up', etc. Those are helicopter parents & can disrupt everything because they won't shut up. They go behind a wall to watch & listen on a monitor. But they can quickly go in if they have/need to. Otherwise, be quiet on the set & let the rest of us get on with our jobs.
And a good job too because the original script had a sex scene between Leon and Mathilda. Her parents and Jean Reno forced Luc Besson to remove it.
I love Gary Oldman in so many roles. But this is his one of his finest. Terrifying and brilliant.

The actor who portrays Benny, the big black guy with Stansfield, was one of the fire fighters who sadly perished in the Twin Towers on 9/11
My dad was a SWAT commander in the 90s. He use to use this movienfor training. Said it was the only movie he'd seen where a SWAT team was taken out in a way that would work. "Who looks up!"

The American title is "The Professional", but the international title is "Léon", and there are versions of it with both parts. Thus, your title is correct. Her knowing the room number came from her listening to Gary's character say his office number in the apartment when she was barely not caught there.
The director's cut has about 25 extra minutes of footage. It covers LOTS of extra training, and that's when she takes on his look with the glasses and cap. She even proves that she can clean BETTER or at least more thorough than he does. Thus, at the end when she tells Tony that she can "clean", she really does mean it, because she demonstrated much more than what we saw with her sniper training. It's also during the extended footage (mostly in 1 or 2 parts), that we see the trick foreshadowed that leads to the climax of the movie. It also shows her trying to push even more for an inappropriate relationship (unfortunately), but Léon handles it reasonably well. Aside from the climax of the movie, I would say the second most dramatic and tense moment in the full director's cut is actually in a scene that was cut, when she gives Léon an ultimatum that was presented in a very dramatic way. I STRONGLY recommend watching the director's cut that's about 25 minutes longer, even if you don't watch it as a reaction video.
On one hand, American titles often have the subject spelled out. On the other, there already was "The Professional" in 1981
I first watched this movie about 2 months ago and now it's my favorite movie of all time. I'm a sucker for found family and lone wolf and cub stories. And this is the best execution of those tropes I've seen.

Not a fan of the hits. Takes some of the humanity out of the main characters. Losing empathy when you need it at the end.

I think Natalie Portman gave the best breakout performance ever in this, she was such a natural talent, especially with some difficult subject matter for a child. I really enjoyed this movie, which sure is of it's time in some ways, and Besson has a pretty great catalogue.
Jean Reno just oozes charm, he is an international icon, from early on. If you haven't seen The Big Blue yet, I highly recommend it, just for his performance. You simply can't take your eyes off him.
Another great and underrated Besson gem is Taxi with Marion Cotillard about a French taxi driver that soups up his car and gets recruited by the police to run down a German bank robbing crew. Very silly, very funny and quintessentially French.

Great reaction like always. Natalie Portman's performance while waiting for Leon to open the door is freaking amazing. Her fear cast shadows. The Director’s Cut is more disturbing on the relationship level, but it also clarifies things. She comes on more strongly, even asking him to be her “first.” Leon responds by telling her that he was in love only once and that the father of his girlfriend killed her when he found out they were going to elope. So Leon killed the dad, moved to NY, and became an assassin. Leon says this woman was the only one and, because of that, he wouldn’t be a good lover. Portman chills out a little after that.
So…more disturbing. But it also fleshes out their relationship. They aren’t lovers, but they do love each. Not romantically, but as literally the only people they have in their lives to love. So the lines of what kind of love gets blurred a bit, even if he never, ever crosses a sexual line with her. And a fun - fact, Gary Oldman improvise almost all of his lines on this movie, including the famous "Eeeevvryyyonnneeee". Keep up the good work.

I think this is very well said. It should be disturbing, but it's also real. People make innocent mistakes and get their feelings tangled up all the time. It's how we act that is important and both characters do right by each other in the end.
One of the best assassin movies ever. I love the ending when the head mistress says about stop lying to me. And Gary Oldman with that line EVERYONE. just epic.

Gary Oldman might very well be the most versatile and brilliant actor of all time.
Great reaction to a real gem with such acting and pathos. There is a french film called La Femme Nikita which could almost be considered a prequel from the same director, Jean Reno is called the cleaner in it.
Only in movies will we root for a cold blooded killer. And this is good, for it reminds us that even the worst of humanity has some good somewhere.
Thanks for taking me back to my childhood. Saw this movie a lot as a kid I miss the 90s.

The European version (Leon) is the original version. Americas version (The Professional) had "controversial scenes" that were taken out.
Not exactly. When the film debuted in France in 1994 it was titled Léon. Released a lot of other places under the same name. When it was released in the US (and some other places) it was titled The Professional. Same content, same edit as Léon. In 1996, Luc Besson decided to add in ~25 minutes of footage under the title, Léon: Version Integrale. That is what eventually became known as Léon: The Professional. Sometimes with the “International” subtitle. But that literally means for every country. No special edit for the US, but it may not have been available until 2000 on DVD, which I own. And I got this info from the insert included with.

Luc Besson also wrote a sequel named Mathilda but when he left the producing studio to form his own, the studio still had the rights to the script and held it out of spite! Besson went on to write Colombiana as a as close as he could get to the Mathilda script legally.

Omg this is just one of my favourite movies. The music, the acting and Gary Oldman’s performance
I was in my mid-twenties when this movie came out. I immediately loved it. I remember think Natalie would a star.
I never saw their relationship as anything but a love starved scarred little girl being infatuated with an adult male who showed her kindness. And Leon as an emotionally stunted simple man, who saw Mathilda as a young god-daughter/friend that needed someone to protect her , nothing else. Sometimes young girls flirt with older men, having no idea what they are actually doing, just imitating what they see in tv, or older women do. My best friend’s daughter would flirt with me like that all the time during a phase. I’d just go tell her parents to keep an eye out for her. Thankfully she soon outgrew that behavior, grew up to be a wonderful young woman and just recently graduated college.
So freakin emotional movie and everyone is doing a very good job. This is from Matilde... just tears all around.

I would love for a The Professional Part 2 with Natalie being the hitwoman and encounters a young boy. Maybe a story of redemption for Matilda.
There was a script for a sequel that was to be titled ‘Mathilda’ where she did in fact grow up to become an assassin. Due to a dispute over rights, the script was reworked into the film ‘Columbiana’.

Arguably one of the greatest movies EVER. So good, and a great story as well, kept it realistic as well as emotionally and morally legit. The emotions you showed really got to me, you're a very beautiful woman, but I am always more impressed with a woman's inner beauty more, and you showed plenty. Kudos, love your channel.

Luc Besson is a French director who received global acclaim for his film "La Feme Nakita"" in which the character of The Cleaner comes from. When director Doug Liman made The "Bourne Identity" after his indy success of "Swingers" (written by Jon Favreau - starring Vince Vauhn, Jon Favreau, Ron Livingston and Heather Graham)- he said 'I want the action to be like the kitchen scene in "La Femme Nakita".' The studio said - you are a big guy now, you have the budget, call him up. "Nakita" has been remade 3-times by American filmmakers - but all still agree it remains a modern classic. Favreau and Vauhn teamed up a few years later to make "The Breakup" with Jennifer Anniston (during the TV show "Friends"). It also starred Joey Lauren Adams ("Chasing Amy" and "Dazed and Confused", Jason Bateman (everything), Vincent D'Onofrio
("Full Metal Jacket", "Law & Order") and Peter Billingsley ("A Christmas Story"). The movie poster shows a couple in bed with a taped line down the middle - the DVD play screen asks the viewer to "pick a side". Enjoy.

Her existence in his life all of a sudden is a MAJOR complication. Not sure why people would not get that him shooting her with a silencer the first night would be an option - one he doesn't take, but it's an option.
I watched this movie for the first time in 1996. I had no clue of who Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and Natalie Portman were but after watching it I became a big fan of 3 of them. It was the first movie that made me cry. Every movie that had Gary Oldman, Jean Reno or Natalie Portman I watched them all.

Good “Silence of the Lambs” call. And good call on John Wayne's name. One of my favorite moments in “King of the Hill” is when Hank is told that John Wayne’s real name was Marion. Hank then says, “You take that back!”
Loved your reaction to this amazing movie. Natalie Portman is great in this for her first movie, the only problem for her was all of the creeps sending her letters after this due to her "attachment" to Leon in the movie. Natalie spoke about it recently somewhere.

When it was released in the US (and some other places) it was titled The Professional. Same content, same edit as Léon. In 1996, Luc Besson decided to add in ~25 minutes of footage under the title, Léon: Version Integrale. That is what eventually became known as Léon: The Professional. Sometimes with the “International” subtitle. But that literally means for every country. No special edit for the US, but it may not have been available until 2000 on DVD, which I own. And I got this info from the insert included with.
Such a brilliant movie! The Big Blue/Le Grand Bleu is also another awesome one with Jean Reno by Luc Besson. I watched both as a kid and never really got into them but as an adult I appreciate them so much more.
I was 19 years old when i went to see "The Professional" in the theatre. That was 30 years ago daaamn.. Anyway it's nice to see how you react like we did when my generation first saw this because we don't see movies like this anymore. A brilliant performance from Natalie portman, her first film and of course Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.
This is one of Gary Oldman's greatest performances!

Still on top of my list. Jean Reno, a very young Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman. You could'nt wish for more. Great France movie and very good script. Great reaction Coby. Gary can play a bad guy as nobody else. Altough i must say, Alan Rickman in Die hard was also good. Natalie wasalso great in Star Wars. And Jean Reno, loved him also in Godzilla.
Yeah, Rickman and Oldman, both are (were) such great villain actors, but also did so well as tragic good guys in Harry Potter.

I think the 2 main characters are really well written and their dynamic is switched to great effect.
A 12 year old that's very streetwise, smokes, swears, more overtly sexually expressive.
And Leon who's a complete introvert, can't read, very polite and unassuming, no financial independence, drinks milk etc.
Leon is definitely portrayed as the more innocent of the two. It's very interesting to watch their dynamic.

One of my favorite movies. Loved how you loved the characters. My only criticism is the poor plant. Doubt a tropical plant would survive a NY winter. Good news, plant won't have to worry. Riding lawn mower will have first dibs.

"Where the Heart Is" is another good early Natalie P movie. She plays a young pregnant girl that's been abandonned & gives birth in a walmart. Kathy Bates & Ashley Judd also star in it.
Portman is excellent in everything besides "the prequels that shall not be named."

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember seeing it for the first time in 1996 on HBO, or Pay-Per-View or something and immediately falling in love with it. I've always been a movie nut. This came out when I was 19. Maybe 15 years ago, I got to thinking to myself "How in the world did I miss seeing it in the theater? I would have been all over this movie!" I looked up the release date, it came out the day my Dad died in 1994. That's how I missed seeing it in the theater. I named one of my cats Mathilda after Natalie Portman's character.

"The Professional" happened to get released right after "Pulp Fiction." Fans of that movie had an appetite for a gritty, unusual kind of hitman movie.
Absolutely love this movie. Great reaction. Everyone is just so good in it! Luc Besson's finest, without a doubt (With Taxi (The original) and The Fifth Element tying for second).
Love Danny Aiello in this too (RIP). His best role for me personally was in Two Days In The valley... Which is a criminally underrated mid '90s crime comedy. I highly recommend it.

It's a pity so many reactors are reacting to the cut-down version of this film (25 minutes taken out, no less). They're missing powerful scenes such as the Russian roulette one.
Not true. I've got the original UK release on DVD and its simply titled "Leon".
In the UK the film is just called Leon. It is one of my top 10 films. I absolutely love Luc Besson films. Nikita, another Luc Besson film, is linked to this. Jean Reno's character appears briefly.
