    It's one thing to read about this. It's another to see it in action. I can't wait until next warm water season when I'll have an adequate motor for my boat so I can practice this stuff myself. Thank you!

    Thanks Don and Ali - glad you talked about and showed the speed sometimes needed - its even faster sometimes-a lot of people “think” you go slow when trolling all the time - ya gotta try those different speeds- can’t wait for breaklines and straight line passes

    I am ready to watch you catch deep water school of 4/5 lb bass. I can catch the dink’s in the swallow. The deep water school is what I have not found yet. I know you have to cover the shallows first. Can’t wait till the deep water videos.

      So Don, what progress has there been with the production of the depth meter. I t has been a LONG time since you mentioned it. Is that a dead issue?

    Don what are some of the fastest speeds you have trolled in the hottest months of Summer to catch largemouth bass. You could answer shallow water speed ? then deep water speed ? Here in Minnesota I seem to never catch deep water bass in the hottest months of the summer faster than 5 to six miles per hour.

    • @DonDicksonFishing
      @DonDicksonFishing  3 года назад +1

      Hey fish hunter, about 10 mph in the shallows (500, 400, 250) is the maximum during the summer months! Keep in mind, speed of the Lure is predicated on the temperature of the water....the deeper yo go,the colder the water, the slower you go! When you are downstairs, 4 to 5 mph is about right! Hope this helps, but don't get stuck on a number. Those should be considered as guidelines only. Back in the day, if we were not catching, "Buck" would constantly be changing and checking ALL speeds! Never forget... all fishing success and all fishing failure can be answered in two terms, "depth" and "speed." Keep checking it out until the correct speed is determined! Warmest regards,DD

    Hi Don. If the weed line in your diagram did not grow all the way to the surface but stopped growing at a depth of five feet below the surface for example, would you comb the water above the weeds first before moving to the outer edge of the weeds or would you still start making your trolling passes at the outer edge of the weeds. This is the scenario in my home lake - there are submerged weedlines that stop at around 11 feet but they only grow up to about five feet below the surface. Any advice you can give for this situation would be awesome. Thank you!

    • @DonDicksonFishing
      @DonDicksonFishing  3 года назад

      Hey Michael, that's a pretty unusual situation. Most of the submerged weed lines I have fished regardless how deep they were growing,came too around a foot or so of the surface! However, in your lake I would in fact start my contour trolling at the outside edge of the weed line. The only time I might throw top water baits or spinner baits into and or over the weeds would be once I arrived at STRUCTURE! Don't forget, the whole idea of contour trolling is to eliminate unproductive water, locate structure, and the school of big fish!!! I will be talking about the proper casting of the shallows and upcoming videos. Hope this helps!

    How is the quickest way to find the exact depth of a weed line Don? For example in a lake I like to fish a in Utah the contour map I bought says the weed line goes to 20' but some years the water level fluctuates so it could really be 18' or maybe 22'. So how is the best way to find the exact depth so I'm fishing right on the weed line? Thanks, Rob.

    • @jimjamfishandcook
      @jimjamfishandcook 3 года назад

      Hi Rob. Its at 2:10 in the video. It's easiest to do with your flasher. You can't rely on a map...you have to verify it yourself.

    • @DonDicksonFishing
      @DonDicksonFishing  3 года назад

      Hey Rob and Diane, The fellow that sent you an answer is correct! Should be an easy task for you, because you already know the approximate depth that the weeds grow in your lake (20feet). As long as you have a reliable depth sounder, you simply drive out into the lake and keep driving towards the middle of the lake until your depth sounder stops showing you weeds.! Once in open water, iturn the boat back towards the shore to verify what You established on the initial pass and then You are ready to start fishinq!

    Hi Don, can you give the specifics on the boat you are in?

    • @DonDicksonFishing
      @DonDicksonFishing  3 года назад

      Hey Edward, sorry to have to tell you a friend of mine designed and built that boat for me back in the late 1970s. We made eight or 10 changes to the hull before we decided we had the perfect trolling and casting boat! We sold about 7000 boats by the late 1990's when my boat builder retired. Just a few years later I retired from full time promoting and teaching after some thirty five years! Obviously, that was the end of the boat business. You can occasionally find some used ones on the Internet. Most of them are still in great shape and very fishable, so you might want to keep your eye out! Thanks for your interest… Warmest regards, DD

    Watched all five, love them, but every time you get to speed, and why everyone thinks its to fast, you go past it on all the videos.... watched the last one, I want to pray for you tonight, I will figure the speed thing out later. May God bless you Don, and don't let a doctor tell you not to get in a boat, for us, its like he said dont love your wife. Live your life, and thank you.
    If you find your bored though, Speed?
    Lay off sugar and carbs too.

    Each Lure has exact minimum and maximum capability depending on line length. Go to my website www.dondicksonfishing.com--we have a free PDF download, A Spoonplug Line Length Chart. I suggest you laminate it and keep it with you in the boat.
