What size sinker is used in this application?
Looks like you’ve got on about 4oz sinker…?

Hi Don. Is there a general rule of thumb for the number of layers to let out per foot of depth and if so, is it the same for fishing a Spoonplug on wire vs mono?

Hey Michael, I'll be addressing that in greater detail very soon, but let me give you the averages for each lure.
As you probably know, there are 7 different sizes of Spoonplugs. Normally we are running the first 3 sizes, (smallest) on a short line which is 8-10 layers. The next 2 sizes, (100 and 200) are normally run on medium line length - 14 to 16 layers. The last 2 and largest lures, (700 and 800) normally are run on a long line which is 20-24 layers. With wire, as a general answer to your question, you can effectively double the maximum running depth of each Spoonplug with about the same amount of line let out. But as you go deeper, you normally have to add a few layers to the general hand rule. There are also some exceptions to the hand rules and I'll deal with them in an upcoming vlog. Thanks for watching - Warmest Regards, DD

I'm wondering about how one would go about getting the spoonplug downstairs using the wire line. Do you let the line out, put the motor in neutral, and pump it in the same manner as the river rig you were using or is there a different method to this?

Hey thanks for the question. No! You must keep the boat under power when you are letting out line with a Spoonplug. A Spoonplug has multiple hooks and if you just let it tumble down with your motor in neutral the hooks will catch up and you will lose your trolling pass - have to reel in and start all over again. The Spoonplug has a diving action that drives the lure deep. Since we are using wire line it takes some time to get the wire and the lure to the bottom. It's also important to understand that in order to reach the extreme depths it's obviously going to take longer lines. I have a video coming out hopefully next week that will explain in detail and answer all of your questions visually so stay tuned! Warmest Regards, DD

I’m interested in wire line, but I guess I just don’t understand it well enough. I went out with a guide last week, and we got into Stipers

Whoops! Stripers at 50 to 100 feet. I’m sure it was just plastic line. Was he just adding more sinker weight?
