Two suns in the sunset refers to nuclear war. The lyrics are extremely powerful.
"The wire that holds the cork
    That keeps the anger in
    Gives way
    And suddenly it's day again"
This means that is witnessing a nuclear explosion, which is why it is day again, even though the sun has just set.
    "two suns in the sunset,
could be the human race is run"
Hence, the second sun is a bomb going off. A very poetic way of describing the nuclear holocaust.

I think somebody needs to sit down and listen to this full album again. What you may have heard or was expecting as a kid hits a whole lot different as a young man. This is a brilliant Pink Floyd album. Take away all the group politics and fan biases surrounding it, and I think you would have to agree. The production, the composition, the lyrics... brilliant. And Roger has never been in finer voice. Fact is none of them were real anxious about pumping out another album so soon after The Wall album with all its clashes. But they had a contract to fulfill and this is what Roger had ready to go. If David was one tenth the writer Waters is he might have had an argument. But barring concepts and compositions of his own he really had no choice. Yes it's dark. So what else is new? It's Pink Floyd. And it's one of their best IMHO.

The concept its fine though it really is just a rehash of the wall with Anti-Thatcher stuff thrown in. . My biggest issue is Roger's vocals are all over it, and frankly he is not a good singer. Particularly when he does any runs of high notes its awful and just screaching at times. I don't think anyone would argue Roger writes better lyrics, but musically, its just not as up to par with other pink floyd albums. Final cut was also incredibly dated very quickly. There are a couple of excellent tracks and a lot that are hard to listen to.
Not Now John and Fletcher's Memorial home are great, but no one really clamours to hear the rest of it. Its mostly either very hard to listen to or worse than better tracks on the Wall.

I'm getting chills and tears listening to this after not having heard it for probably about 15 years. I love this album, but yes it's dark, and that's probably why I haven't listened to it in so long. I listened to the album probably 50 times in the first 10 years after it came out. Emotional, profound stuff. Thank you for doing this! The style is SO classic Floyd. Lots of spaces in the music, which is what Roger has said is what Pink Floyd music is more about - the spaces rather than the notes. I love his description.

Absolutely Doug. I don't think I've ever heard a band who could use silence or muted background noises so effectively. 'The Fletcher Memorial Home' on this album is classic example. Another is 'The Myth of Sisyphus' from 'Ummagumma', a Rick Wright extravaganza and the first Floyd album I ever heard - a great starting point for exploring the diversity of their talent.

Andy Newmark’s drum part and performance is so good though and as a young drummer I remember being puzzled as I tried to emulate it. I think this is the only song off this album where he appears. I don't play this album very often either but I do like it. It's just so sardonic, a very dark outlook ending with a nuclear explosion and everybody dying yet Waters makes it seem nostalgic. There's still some good music in there but it was made without Rick Wright who for me is half the Pink Floyd sound, Gilmour being the other half. Nick Mason said, "The Final Cut was Roger's album. The rest of us drifted into it."

It's more of a Roger Waters album because it was originally leftover Wall tracks that were all Waters material that were going to be released as a compilation. Waters ended up writing some more material and expanded it into a full concept album, getting Mason & Gilmour to play on it. He offered to release it as a solo album, but David & Nick both wanted the money from it being called Floyd, so since it was tied to the Wall & they had played on it he agreed.
That album wasn't really the thing that broke up Floyd. Roger wanted to do solo albums at the time and branch out working with new people, not returning to Floyd anytime soon. David did a solo album as well, but after he wasn't happy with the sales and low turnout to his concerts (with some dates on his tour even having to be cancelled) Both David & Nick wanted a return to making the big Floyd bucks, Roger was happy with the creative freedom of being a solo artist at the time, and cared less about the money than they did. So David & Nick with the record company threatened to sue Waters for "withholding product" in order to try to compel him, the bands principle songwriter, to come back to write another Floyd record straight away since they were still technically under contract and wanted to put pressure on him to get back to work. Instead Roger informed the record company that he quit in order to get out of his contract to be able to continue his solo career and avoid being sued. He wasn't expecting David (with Nick) to continue on with the name without him, or else he probably wouldn't have officially quit & fought to hold onto it. He expected the name to be retired. But they did in fact continue: well mainly David and some hired hands making a very commercialized Floyd like album MMLOR and sticking the PF name on it to guarantee millions of sales. All because David couldn't just accept releasing more material under his own name & honestly representing himself as a solo artist: putting in the work to build up his name but taking a substantial pay cut short term to do so like Waters was doing.

This was a very political orientated album at the time dealing with the Falkland island war its main topic .Roger did not like the fact that the British Empire was fighting another colonial war , and these senseless wars could lead to nuclear war " the sun is in the East , even though the day is done. @Braden C McClure I would normally agree. I have all of Pink Floyd's albums, including the 33 disc The Early Years. I like everything except this disc. I think it's Roger Waters voice that aggravates me after a couple of songs. I have all of Gilmore's solo albums. About Face being my favorite. They're not as good as Pink Floyd albums but.... I have one Waters album. I never did become too attached to it.

As a long Pink Floyd fan I would agree. But then again the fact that you clicked on the video sort of goes against your own argument. You came to this channel to watch only one song without getting the entire picture. As much as we'd like to react to full albums only, realistically you have to admit it would be pretty hard to do so. I'm sure that's why radio stations also played only one song. Anyway, thanks for stopping by!

THAT’S why I clicked on this video…..Trust me, when the “mood” strikes me, and I want to “wash away” the day with some Floyd, I set aside an hour and a half, so I can take in “Animals”, “Wish You Were Here”, or the “The Wall”…………The Final Cut, is difficult for listeners that didn’t grow up in “The Cold War”, I certainly get it. But, It’s “high” on my list, as Pink Floyd albums go. Live long, and prosper, you two! I wish you the best!!

  • @mvunit3

The Final Cut is in my Top 3 Floyd albums, which is not a popular thing to say. But mostly its because of David Gilmour's guitar tone, at times it sounds like he's using rusty guitar strings, as his fingers go across the fretboard, it "shrieks". Like many a time I couldn't afford strings, and played the ones I had till they broke (again), and my fingers would go across and would give-off a HUGE harmonic screech. The added track (or bonus track) "When the Tigers broke free" is a tear-jerker for me, imagining soldiers being inundated by shells and machinegun fire from German Tiger Tanks coming through the trees, with no allied tanks to save them from these Iron monsters (Edit: Just learned the song is about the battle of "Operation Shingle" in Anzio Italy where American and British soldiers fought, where Waters father died as a member of Z Company/8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers). The humming choir sends it off the edge of sad emotion . . . but its beautiful. Basically its the anger that Waters had for the Generals that refused a commander's request to withdraw soldiers from on-coming Tiger I tanks that sent these soldiers to their death. I think this track hits me in the gut everytime I listen to it.
I love "Fletcher Memorial" for the solo and I wish "The Heroes Return" was longer, its much too short, I love that effect on Gilmour's guitar after Waters yells "Jesus Jesus whats it all about!" and that wild flange on the guitar. Great stuff.
    . . . I guess I get-off on melancholic music.
Btw - many years ago, on a now long gone LA FM station, 94.7 KMET. DJ Jim Ladd had a show called "Headsets" that was on after midnight, and he'd do what I was doing on cassettes, creating a theme and adding poetry, movie dialogue and sound effects within and in-between music tracks. One evening he had the man that invented the Special effects sound recording that was used in The Final Cut; Holophonics by Hugo Zuccarelli, and played a demonstration disc (where on headphones, you could hear sounds go around you, and up and down). It was a fascinating interview. I know I taped the show, but I believe, unfortunately, I lost it with TONS of tapes in a storage unit I could no longer afford years ago :(. You can find many of Hugo's sounds here at Yt, and there is a Wiki page about him.
Also the late-great Michael Kaman did the orchestration, and many years later would do the same for Queensryche on "The Warning", "Operation: Mindcrime", "Empire" and "Promised Land" albums.

I'm kinda late to the party here. Interesting Floyd vs Waters debate in the comments below. I like the edgy, melancholy side to Roger's writing, conspicuously absent from Gilmour's Floyd and one of the reasons albums like 'Wall' and 'Dark Side' were such masterpieces. The sound dynamics of the album as a whole are vintage Floyd, but that was Waters's forte and I simultaneously missed the brightness and majesty of David and Richard's playing. I found a solution. I combined material from this with David's solo album 'About Face' which made a much more satisfying mix, reminiscent of the band I knew and loved.

In the interest of equal Floydian representation, you might want to listen to a song from Gilmour’s solo album a year later (1984), About Face. My suggestion is a tune called Murder about John Lennon.

    • @rtwbikerider
      @rtwbikerider 3 года назад +1

@Braden C McClure Yes, the “gun” was replaced by the “knife”, but the rest of the lyrics were an accurate description of the event. The outro with Gilmour playing in the left and right channels against himself is where he gets his “angry bits out”. Piano Palladino on fretless bass is great on this track. Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be any good live versions of the song out there.

@@vicprovost2561 Thanks for the heads up. I don’t think that I saw this performance of Murder before. The performance from New Jersey suffered greatly because of the supporting cast. This was much better. The extended outro was just what I was looking for. I do wish that Gilmour would have done the outro as a “trading eights” situation with Mick Ralph’s. I have to admit that I still like Pino Palladino’s bass on the studio recording best. Thanks again. I’ll have to watch the entire London show now.
