      I might actually have something to say about the clip from Evan Almighty. I don't wanna ruin it for you, but I think it might be interesting.
      There's a lot of basic Judeo-Christian symbolism going on. The dove is a clear reference to the moment at the end of the Biblical flood when Noah sends a dove to find land and it brings back an olive branch. The olive branch subsequently becomes a symbol for the renewal of God's covenant with the Jews, and a symbol of peace for pretty much all time.
      In terms of a Christian allegorical interpretation life is the flood, the land where the olive branch came from is heaven, and the dove could be Christ, an angel, or the prophets, like Moses with the commandments, carrying reminders that even if we can't see him right now, God is real, he has a covenant with us, and maybe heaven is just around the corner. In this instance the dove is Evan now, and God also leaves a dove for Evan after he vanishes.
      The dance is much harder to interpret. I mean it suggests harmony, reinforcing the covenant, but why dancing? Dancing with a human embodiment of God is not a particularly Christian image. It's almost Eastern, or shamanic, that Evan is now cast in this role of prophet in the wilderness. They're even under a big tree like the Buddha or something. I think its kind of an American Protestant thing, the idea that our relationship with God is a friendly and personable one. There also might be an environmentalist undertone, or at least some nature-harmony stuff, but I'm not a biblical scholar so maybe it just relates back to something in the canon I don't know about.
      I do think its interesting that Israel is a name given to Jacob by God. I'm fixated on this in particular. Jacob is Hebrew for "grabs the heel," an idiom for a usurper. The name refers back to Jacob's betrayal of his brother Esau, which is too complicated to go into here. Israel means "wrestles with God" and refers to a mystic kind of dream-vision which Jacob has while he's in exile in the wilderness. "Wrestles with God," Jacob's new name, eventually becomes the name of the Hebrew nation. The scene could be read as a reversal of this old-testament kind of encounter with God.
      Sorry if you really didn't want the scene interpreted, but I thought it was very interesting and got a little too excited.

    That little section from the bachelor interview gave me the heebie-jeebies. That is pretty much an emotionally abusive relationship at its finest. (Kind of speaking from experience here) But also, notice how he makes a point to say he's not only angry with her, but disgusted with her. It's his way of trying to humiliate her and belittle her in front of the cameras while also expressing his aggression. For her sake, I hope she got away from him.

    • @oneshotmoonrock1344
      @oneshotmoonrock1344 6 лет назад +25

      I'm not a fan on the bachelor so I haven't seen much of it outside of advertising, but I think it is worth pointing out that the kind of anger or as he called "disgust" he had with her probably didn't just appear out of nowhere. The first portion of the interview that we saw was her shitting on him verbally (in a way that was understandably very personal to him given that they both went into the relationship with some hope of a loving relationship (the point of the show)). If someone you thought you loved said stuff like "the relationship got worse and worse" to your face when you thought as most people do you had been a good person/partner to them it would hurt, it would feel like manipulation and fabrication from your perspective if you think it was them who soured the relationship not you. The problem people have with the reaction isn't the way the relationship itself went regardless of how invasive reality shows are we can't get the full scope on that but they way he dealt with it when it crumbled it doesn't necessarily mean that he was emotionally manipulative during the relationship, for all we know she was the manipulative one dredging stuff out in front of cameras to portray herself in a positive light and attack his character and worth, we don't know but by observation that was probably what he thought she was doing not emoting but sand bagging him in front of the entire world on TV.

    • @KillsAllHumanity
      @KillsAllHumanity 6 лет назад +9

      Thats an interesting perspective I'd not considered. To be fair, they could also be doing the same to each other after being so fed up with their relationship.

      I agree, basically a textbook abusive relationship interaction, I also speak from experience like OP. Usually they do ham it up, sure. But she speaks essentially identical to most anyone you'll meet that is somewhat freshly out of an emotionally abusive relationship. Hoping he would change. Loving him and wanting it to be how she thought it would be. Him saying hes So mad at her, so its not that hes better than she says he is. It's that she makes him mad and it's what she did to herself.

      I totally agree, Elise :) Big Joel, I honestly was very interested when you started talking about The Crown. I'd never seen the show before and from the trailers, I wasn't very interested... BUT when you showed the epic opening sequence and some of the scenes and trying to find the underlying meaning of the crown and power, I honestly became extremely interested and wanted to know. I love your analyses and wanted to see it, but then you were like nope trash tricked u day nvm XD then I was sad. Just know that I was not bored and that such a creative, original take definitely piqued my interest.
      But anyway, I do totally agree and second that you should do some more specific analysis on certain things in media. I enjoyed it a lot and I think that looking at specifics instead of the big picture of a show could provide some creative insight not seen in other RUclips commentary videos. You do that already in some areas, but maybe just more enhanced in the future; it could set you apart from others more. :D

      I really like the dance. It's slow and it stops and starts a lot and it consists of very simple moves. It's almost as if the actors had no idea they were supposed to dance until they said their lines. Then they awkwardly figured out some moves they could do together without music

      God simply says "Do the dance", he watches him to mimic the dance and they have fun dancing, but then he looks away from god and continues the dance. God watches him, laughing, but he doesn't know that God was smiling upon him and when he looks back he is not there. For a moment he considers, have I turned my back on God? Has he turned his back on me? But he looks up, to see a fellow creation of God, a symbol of peace. It was his dance, God was watching him.

    The Bachelor and The Office could actually make great topics for giant video essays nobody would watch, essays that could say a lot about television and reality and how the former sometimes supplants the latter and sometimes reflects it and sometimes(more often than we think) manages to do both. Hell, you could even combine the two subjects to make one huge super-essay about TV. Though I guess since I won't shut up about it maybe I should just do it.

    Many MANY years ago, I was an alternate for the second season of "The Real World" (in Los Angeles in 1993). I was going to age out of the houseguest pool that year (the age was 24, I think, and I was about to turn 25), and they went a different direction when David was kicked out, but I did get a call. Even then, the casting and behind-the-scenes processes with production were SO INTENSE that I can't imagine that anyone on a show with a goal like The Bachelor's of falling in love wouldn't fall into the idea that they are, indeed, in love, even though every bit of past evidence points to the fact that this doesn't really happen on the show.
    Other friends who have been through the whole reality TV paces say it's almost like living on another planet, only more alienating, so reality TV is so very interesting to me, for that hyper-reality sort of thing.

Evan does a bunch of crazy things and isn't the most likeable character (from what I remember), but the goofy, stupid dance is met with absolute utter delight by Morgan Freeman's God, and that's the whole point, isn't it? That season betrayed a lot about the office and it is more interesting than the office got worse. The philosophy behind Michael was that however out of touch and asinine he was, he was a good boss that the office needed. They just drop this with Andy and show that the office doesn't even need leadership at all to succeed, which erases the importance of Michael in retrospect .

    • @eggynack
      @eggynack 6 лет назад +5

      Not sure I agree that Michael was a necessary and good boss. The Scranton branch seems to largely coast by on the basis of having a couple of top salesmen along with all the clients from the merger without any of the employees. I kinda struggle to think of any important/good decisions Michael makes manager-wise, though he obviously does do some high quality sales sometimes. The show does indicate a few times that Jim would be a comparably bad manager, but that doesn't really prove that Michael is great.

    "Sons and Daughters" is one of the best songs on that particular album, and would make particularly amusing credits music for an episode like that given the lyrics and the fact that it is structured like a traditional singalong tune, but including it diegetically is just a bizarre choice-particularly given that the coda implies that the subjects of the song are the survivors of a relatively modern, possibly nuclear war.

    Okay, so when I was a kid I had to watch Evan Almighty a lot of times, I grew up with the church being very important and so it was just a movie I saw a lot and I always really hated "the dance". I thought it was uncomfortable and unnessiary, it never made me laugh. I haven't been watching your videos for very long so when showed it the first time I was ready for you to rip it apart and make fun of it's stupidity so I wasn't trying to understand it at all.
    So when you said you liked it I was confused and I figured watching it the second time I'd try to see why. It's interesting, my opinion has changed I think, I kinda like it too.
    So I don't know if you're christian or have a reason to like it outside of the humor but for me I think it connects with how my relationship with faith has changed. When I was a kid I saw God as some dude in the sky who just kinda sat there and watched us. He seemed so distant and etherial, kind of scary and above everyone and everything. When I was in college I began to move away from religious stuff. A lot of that had to do with me having never really formed my own oppinions, I just didn't get it. Also, I was realizing that I'm gay and I just didn't know how people in the church would feel about that.
    So, about a year ago I decided to go to church again. I heard a couple sermons (online) around sexuality from one in a nearby city and I decided to check it. I actually found what I heard in most every sermon to be interesting and connect to my life which I was not used to faith doing. I began to actually really like church, it gave me a time to ponder and explore my thoughts, my beliefs and my goals. With this more engaged version of my faith I've also really seen a shift in how I see God. Now they're more flexible in their shape and far more relatable. I see God as someone I could laugh at a joke with or do a silly dance with but that I could also have a deep conversation with or confide in and feel safe. So I think for me, I like how my preception of that clip has changed from rediculous to relatable. Also, both of the actors just seem so genuinely happy, it's just nice. Thanks for sharing that, I genuinely enjoyed seeing it again.

      I can't say I relate completely. I'm at the weird young adult crossroads you wrote about yourself. The more I feel pressured to say I believe in the teachings of Christianity, the more I distance myself. I think church and faith is somehow still a positive force in my life and my inner world though, so I'm not going to give up just yet.

    On the dance at the end of Evan Almighty I 100% feel it on the "inexplicable emotional power." I think it's moving, like, actually, emotionally moving, to the point that on the second, uninterrupted viewing of the scene my girlfriend and I just started crying tears of joy. Like, aside from Morgan Freeman being as perfect a theophany as any human being could ever be, there's a lot going on metaphysically here: god expressing love in his creation yeah, sure, but also profound joy at the silliness people get up to. Like, this god is just *so* happy about this little human dance, and is so excited to take part in it. It's like the Father aspect of god but instead of stern G-D blowing people up because we just keep fucking it up for him, this is the Father who get's drunk at a family reunion and calls you out to the dance floor to do the macarena. That's a profound and beautiful thing.

    That ending scene with God dancing is D R I P P I N G in themes focused on in youth group and happier church sermons. God’s described as laughing with you and taking joy in the things that make you joyful. They describe angels dancing a LOT so it’s really appropriate in the context to have them dance; It speaks directly to the imagery we get of what heaven’s like. The dove that brings the branch (signifying God’s kept promises of happier times) is also thematically related to dancing because the dove is the holy spirit and the holy spirit literally is joy (and is always described as dancing and laughing with you)

    I swear a solid 40% of what makes these videos so entertaining to me is trying to suss out how much of Big Joel's verbal affectation is just how he genuinely talks and how much is a character. Either way is delightful because the affectations themselves are delightful and the videos are delightful, but I've definitely spent far too much brain power on this.

    Having never watched The Office, I had no idea they used "Sons & Daughters", one of my favorite songs, one that consistently brings me to tears. It's a song about a people dreaming of escaping their war-torn homeland and finding a new place to settle down and call home. It's a topic that becomes ever more tragic when you consider the modern realities that 1. there are currently vast numbers of people, real human beings, who are trying to flee their homes, some due to war but some due to poverty and some due to climate change, the last of which being an issue that's only going to get drastically worse as time goes on, and 2. most countries that are currently in a position to accept and accommodate refugees (and who JUST HAPPEN to be largely the same countries are actively causing these various crises) are completely denying asylum en masse. Here in the US, we fucking throw people in jail and deport them (sometimes to a country they're not even from) for trying to seek asylum, which, in addition to being a serious violation of international law, is just a really fucked up thing to do.
    So like, the song is about dreaming of a new homeland. But we know most of them are never going to find one.
    So, in that context, I find it to be in pretty poor taste for the show's producers to use such a serious song, especially with the intent of making it a fucking sitcom theme song. I have nothing against sitcoms, I am in fact a gigantic fan of early The Simpsons (season 8 was the last Golden Era season, fight me), and sitcoms absolutely can have serious moments, but the overall tone of them is obviously comedic and lighthearted, it's literally in the name "situational comedy". So, if for that reason alone, I'm glad this spinoff attempt went nowhere, because it would've fucking ruined one of my favorite songs.

    Would love to know your thoughts re: Jake and Vienna in light of the Bachelor finale last week (in which Arie broke up with Becca, and filmed the breakup. This was done with split screens and fully unedited for 20 minutes). It’s some of the most horrifying and gripping minutes of reality I’ve ever seen. It really resonated with me as the like tangibility of reality tv, like the Jake/Vienna interview

    • @victoriaology
      @victoriaology 6 лет назад +1

      Only about 6-7 minutes of it is on youtube and it's just the part in which Arie breaks up with Becca because he's still in love with the runner up, Lauren. The long version (which may only be available on hulu or ABC) includes Becca leaving to cry, Arie standing there and refusing to move when she asks him to leave, and ultimately Arie trying to get Becca to make him feel better for breaking up with her.

      While it may be a hassle to go to Hulu/ABC and fast forward to 2/3 of the episode, I highly recommend seeing it all the way through - if only to see Chris Harrison describe how emotional this is while showing no emotion himself.

    My "Evan Almighty scene" is at the end of Fast and Furious 5. When they open the vault after a big heist, the money starts pouring out of it, the camera focus on Vin Diesel as "Danza Kuduro", a song about doing a sexy dance (by Don Omar, who also plays one of the heroes here) starts, and suddenly Vin Diesel looks up, like he's thanking God. It's mesmerizing.
    Also, love the trash day. Do more of these.

    @Big Joel, I just found your channel a few days ago and I find myself listening to your content now whenever I have some free time. I often listen to RUclipsrs like Matthewmitosis, Joseph Anderson, and the Redlettermedia Plinkett reviews, and others like them for a unique breakdowns of themes messages, and story or game design structure; and I find your content to be right up there with them.
    All of your videos have consistently been really sagacious, and so I am particularly hopeful that you will tackle some potentially confusing/vague- seeming pieces of media. As a suggestion: the fairly new movie Annihilation just came out and nobody is really talking about it as it is being over- shadowed by Black Panther and the Shape Of Water. It is an intently frightening movie at times with complex themes of identity It's beautifully shot with strong editing and a unique choice of sound design and music. So it is a bit of an untapped subject.
    I'm sure you have a lot on your plate, but I'm hoping this suggestion finds you at a good time. Thanks anyways for the content you've already produced whatever you decide about this

    The bachelor guy reminded me of the abusive partner of someone I used to be friend's with. He used to talk to her in almost exactly the same way, she'd get texts if she went out without him saying 'you disgust me'. He also lied about provably false things without missing a beat, which might have been what the bachelor guy did about flying. Think, he was at the least a narcissist, he was really obsessed with status and superiority.

    I subbed to you recently but I just wanted to say you're a really unique video essayist and I love what you're doing. A lot of other folks have niches they fill (Lindsay Ellis) or only talk about one specific medium (ScreenPrism) and that's great, but you're similar to The Nerdwriter in that you can talk about a lot of different stuff, movies, RUclipsrs, reality TV, etc. I think that's really cool. But unlike him you have a certain charm about you that's a little dorky and little snarky at the same time that reminds me of Jenny Nicholson, she's not a video essayist but she critiques movies in an informal one-on-one kinda way. You should check her out if you haven't already. I think having a more neutral tone is not a bad thing, it's better than being too emotional, but you have just enough humor and personal honesty that I get behind what you're saying more without perceiving a bias. So yeah, keep doing what you're doing because you're currently my favorite video essayist :) .
