It's surprising what can be achieved in a year. Adding evergreens will help with creating that microclimate you'll need for the more delicate plants; obvious one is the tropical looking Fatsia Japonica, dot a number of these about the garden round about the mid to back of the border. Then there's Mahonia Sweet Caress, a mid border plant. I live on the edge of The Fens with it's cold north easterly winds and these plants are doing fine my tropical garden
