The New Youngest Self-Made Billionaire In The World Is A 25-Year-Old College Dropout | Forbes

  • When Massachusetts Institute of Technology dropout Alexandr Wang made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Enterprise Technology list in 2018, his startup Scale used artificial intelligence to begin automating tasks like image recognition and audio transcription. Back then, its customers included GM Cruise, Alphabet, Uber, P&G and others
Now Wang, 25, is the youngest self-made billionaire. And while he still partners with buzzy companies, today he’s got $350 million in government defense contracts. This has helped Scale hit a $7.3 billion valuation, and give Wang a $1 billion net worth (as he owns 15% of the company).
Scale’s technology analyzes satellite images much faster than human analysts to determine how much damage Russian bombs are causing in Ukraine. It’s useful not just for the military. More than 300 companies, including General Motors and Flexport, use Scale, which Wang started when he was 19, to help them pan gold from rivers of raw information-millions of shipping documents, say, or raw footage from self-driving cars. “Every industry is sitting on huge amounts of data,” Wang says, who appeared on the Forbes Under 30 list in 2018. “Our goal is to help them unlock the potential of the data and supercharge their businesses with AI.”

The pharmaceutical industry would pay big bucks to get that data from AI companies incorporating the AI into the very untrusted and corrupt pharma Industry. That's just one issue of the few others he mentioned like the DOD and lack of trust people have for the military industrial complex today. Until AI can earn peoples trust I'm just not confident how well we think AI is going to be implemented.

For those of you who actually want to understand WHY he is worth a billion -- a little technical.
Machine Learning has been around since the 1970s in various theoretical models. The difference between ML/AI today and then is that the mathematical models themselves, via Convolutional Neural Networks, are already formulated and proven to effective -- the big one was Google's language translation in 2012ish times. This approach is 1000X more effective than traditional AI systems based on things like decision trees. The secret to understanding CNN is to not understand it because "learning" in most instances is doing various feature engineering techniques to gain a better fit on data. Literally, it is a engineer adding or subtracting a parameter to the model and letting the model converge to the data set. This is a specialized area of ML called Deep Learning.
From a engineering standpoint, the amount of work involved to build something like Google's language translator was 10% software engineers and 90% linguistic experts in multiple languages building a MASSIVE data set to push through the model.
In a sentence, the data defines the model that is used for AI applications. Good Data means Good AI.
Wang's company markets, with various engineering lingo, to traditional engineering markets like the DOD and automobile companies. Essentially, the company markets a "Machine Learning Development Life Cycle," to these firms which the engineers at these companies say, "Hey Mr MBA/Bureaucratic manager, look at how this service speeds up our engineering life cycle by speeding up this hot/buzzing new concept called ML/AI portion which investors love."
In reality, Wang's product is only doing one thing which is building tools to help construct "Good" data sets. In essence, all these companies, sort of like the NSA, have been accumulating massive amounts of data that has massive potential to be valuable if it were clean -- this is called big data.
Wang's company is sort of like a cleaning service that also sells mops and buckets for institutions that got lost on their big data journey. There are 1000 companies like him but his is the Venture Capital Corporate one that is chewing up the entire market place.
Personally, I dont see this company growing beyond catering to defense/DOD where big tech isnt allowed to enter due to conflict of interest. Because in reality, this is just a way to improve the quality of Data/Amazon turks employees where the company doesnt have the capacity to hire real software engineers....
In my opinion, Scale AI belongs in the data/software/tech category of "Military Industrial Complex" that goes along with companies like Palantir, and maybe Andruil. I swear, the reason why he is this successful is because his parents worked for the government. National Interests like National players.

The "College Dropout" headline is putting a negative image on those that are pursuing higher education, and putting in the efford. Sure college is not the only choice if the person is bussiness oriented and is well-groomed since he was a child like Wang, but college has never been a bad choice. Guys like Wang are extremely privileged to be able to get to where they are, and that is perfectly fine. That's just life. However, they are set up for success since birth. Are you? Are we? So why are we making younger generation think that dropping out of college is the cool thing to do? Teach them that "not attending" college is simply an option, not a bragging right.
The kid is bright as a star, but he's not the one that runs the company. You're clueless if you think running a company is that easy. He's the image, the story, the one that impress investors. Don't pressure him into another Elizabeth Holmes.

I dunno... I just got the chills when he started talking about the war and the little emotional music started. Like I can imagine him and his team of financial sharks thinking how can they take profit of any situation, not really helping, and move on to the next.

His concluding idea got me the most. Where there are less people who are focused on figuring out problems that we have today. Everyone is trying to achieve tomorrow's dream and that's not helping. The Bible says there's time for everything and we should mostly focus on current issues than trying to solve tomorrow's problem. In the context of AI, I think I have to disagree with him. 20, 30 years is actually not that far away in the history of humanity. A lot of people are trying to build better AIs but few are thinking about why they are building these powerful systems and whether they are aligned with the interests of humanity at large. We don't want to build an intelligent system that turns out to be psychopathic because all we teach them about humanity are war game simulations.

Otherwise, inspiring story and continued success to he and Scale AI.

First year medical student here and I don't even know if I wanna do this. This guy is smart and has encouraged me to do something about my situation, to work harder and be smart about decision making. Yes, he also had awesome parents that helped pave the way for him, that's really a great blessing out there. At my age he is already doing great things, I mean i don't even know the process to getting a bank account...😢😢😢
