I don't think that's where the sponge belongs. It doesn't seem logical. The purpose of such a part may be to prevent dust in the air going to the engine. Then, it seems more logical to install it at the inlet of the hose entering the engine from the box. It is best for a user buying a new vehicle to check and verify the location of this sponge.

Although your idea seems logical at first glance, I think that in this case the sponge will make air entry very difficult.
