I was driving around the other day and I heard an old REM tune on the radio and missed the days when a new REM album would come out and you'd have that as part of the soundtrack for your life.
This video is a gem for every R.E.M. fan
“We don’t know what we’re doing, ever”
And I live by that
The entire band of “R.E.M.” are the most British-looking Americans I’ve ever seen lol
Every single one of them.
No reference to teeth please…
Michael really wasn't kidding when he said that the record would go on to make pop history
It wasn’t that great. Green and automatic for the people were better. But losing my religion is possibly their greatest song
@@forestfire1232 I'd take Orange Crush over Losing My Religion.
At 6:30 you could say that the interviewer foreshadowed the album title when he said that it was about time
Thats what he thought, but Nirvana made them look lame
@@lucasoheyze4597Kurt Cobain loved Michael Stipe and R.E.M.; your argument is invalid.
Michael Stipe’s speaking voice is so different than his singing voice 😳
Depends which song.It sounds like this on Belong.
@@StratsRUswell yeah cos he’s talking on that song, silly goose
Was and still is probably my favourite album of altime, had it playing constantly in my old battered Ford escort van care free✌️
My first favorite band...also Stipe's outfit would totally fit in walking down the street today!
The amazing music created at pasley park is unimaginable
Stipe is definitely goofing with the interviewer. And with hat and glasses at mixing board… so funny!
What’s so crazy is that while Mike Mills was recording in Mpls at this time he was also at the Lemonheads concert in the 7th Street Entry. He was hopping back and forth between the Sunday Night Dance Party in the big room at First Ave and then ducked into the Entry. I asked him for his autograph and he was so nice. Evan Dando was nice too he signed my Lemonheads Lick CD.
I loved the Lemonheads back then! It’s a shame about Ray was the album I think.. “Into Your Arms” was such a great song. 🙂 I also remember Evan from the Blake Babies video for their cover of “Temptation Eyes.” Now that was a damn good song too lol! Music was so good back then.
They ended up calling it "Out of Time" because they ran out of time to think up a title before it went to pressing.
That's right. And they took it, as I heard, from the Prince lyrics to the song 1999: "2000 - 0 - 0 Party's over ooops out of time" ... so 2nite I'm gonna party like it's 1999.
@@AS-ws3ib”You are CORRECT, Sir!”
Mike Mills is the Best Background Vocalist of All Time.
John Lennon is the best background vocalist of all time
@@Jaymertak ahh yes Lennon, a guy who comes to mind when people say “background vocalist”
Brett gurewitz would like a word lol
Richard Manuel from the Band.
100% find the river is something else
The vinyl mix on the 25th anniversay is amazing.
Man, those eyebrows are something else!
I was like what eyebrows then DAMN
Always have been. Bill wouldn't be the same without them 🥰
So also the cover for Lifes Rich Pageant
He actually managed to pull them off; Bill Berry looks like he invented the unibrow!
@@curly_wynHe’s definitely gotten Liam Ghalleger of “Oasis” beat for the title of “Unibrow of the Century” in the “Caucasian Alternative Band” category 😂
3:40
Most epic unibrow I've ever seen
One of their best albums!
This is fantastic, thanks!! This is the kind of stuff I want on the boxsets, yet that is sadly not what us fans get.
Great band! Love them. Still do.
Uncool and unrock'n'roll. Loved them. Will always love them.
Huh?
Who's cooler?
Amazing they knew it would pop history - love that confidence. They were right.
Brilliant album by the way……the songwriting on this……and the music…..incredible……
That was way cool!
FACT about this Recording Studio : This was called Paisley Park, home of the facility served as an Artist named Prince.
Oh, like it says in the title?
@@asticou04 well, yes. 😀
Michael Stipe was a big Prince fan, he actually bought an original copy of (back then rare) Prince's Black Album.
He has an eclectic ear
Really? He is on record saying he did not like Prince as a person.
@@mallafets Really? he is on record ON VIDEO saying that he is a big Prince fan (Mtv awards 1991 after show). Another story has REM recording at Paisley Park. Stipe wanted to talk to Prince about a collaboration, Prince asked Michael Stipe if he owned his masters, Stipe said "no" & Prince responded along the lines of "well we have nothing to talk about".
@@mallafets It's not uncommon for people to be big Prince fans (musically) but not a fan of Prince (the person). I would assume that's the case with Michael.
exactamente, de hecho Prince (persona) no cae del todo bien@@RVZNKaraoke
I went to this studio in 2017 on a tour. If you are ever in the Minneapolis area, go book a tour.
Peter Buck looked Hollywood cool back then
"We didn't come here for the waters"
For the last 40 years there have been some great bands who have several great records. REM, The Cure, Etc
Airrrr ballllllll!
I’d like to see them…….i miss them…..a lot…..

Many bands recorded at Paisley Park. It had a great console and that fat 2 inch tape sound.
Most studios were still using 2” analog at the time.
Nice variety of shots in that package. I feel like I’ve never been there. 😂
'Come on guys, we're out of time'
Mike and Bill seem like nice guys that I would want to sit and have a beer with. Michael and Peter, not so much.
dare one say the feeling might be mutual ...
I wasn't born in the year 1990 when this MTV vault throwback happened here.
Neither were trillions and trillions and trillions of other people that will be born
MTV did Bill Berry dirty by including that terrible shot he took at the end lol
But it was at a legendary basketball court, so that is amazing footage.
The body language when they're talking about the studio.
What about it?
@@Vibeagain A bit bored with it being in the middle of nowhere.
Ok ... Michael's hat is so very, very lat 80's early 90's. That look hasn't aged well.
Are you kidding me? That hat is now in fashion again😂
I had no idea this album was made there.
It was only MIXED there.
I know what they should call this record .. they should call it Out of time!
Their previous stuff was great
For me they are forever, like Leonard, Josquin and Bach.
Never noticed it before, but dude, Stipe's got some Rhianna-level forehead game going on there...
He was going bald…
That shot was nothing but net, until the gravitational field of the eyebrows pulled it a little off course.
As a basketball player Bill was a very good drummer
Michael Stipe does not sound like I thought he would sound 😮
MTV is cool 😎.
Mtv WAS cool
Is that the court where the iconic Shirts v. Blouses game was played?
03:45 brow game big
I mean - he was right. lol Both R.E.M. and The Pixies changed everything.
I think it was both R.E.M. and The Cure who broke through to mainstream audiences in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and that would have been the narrative, if Nirvana didn’t break through a few months later.
Mills had British teeth.The Legend.
Love him ❤️
I’m glad someone else mentioned it. I’m also glad “Out Of Time” was successful so he could get those teeth fixed.
@@palmerlpdidn’t even bother getting them fixed after this album was successful lmao
@@kai326 I've seen a missing side tooth on Michael...much later in their career. Part of their appeal is not being so much into glam, but more into art.
@@mizztery2994 very valid. Had braces for three years, painful waste of money
Bill Berry giving the Gallagher brothers a run for their money with those eyebrows!
He was giving me serious Tim and Eric Uncle Muscles vibes lol
Michael was right ❤
I was waiting for Bill to say maybe they should call the album 'Air Ball' after that shot...
I was hoping Prince would jump in from frame left and show Bill how it’s done.
oh god, paisley park looked like an abandoned mall. Wonder what it's like today. A tomb?
Where is the purple one?
Given that they didn’t have a title the record is appropriately named “Out Of Time”.
So fucking cool.
Can you say....speeeeeeed
wired as fuck haha
Armchair after the fact is often inane
Mike’s teeth. Jesus
More Protestant Work Ethic would've been a great album title for this band
I didn't know bill did piano as well
You sure don't see it often. I think ‘Perfect Circle’ was Bill's music.
Mike Mills looked like Elton John before he did himself in 1992.
But do they have 49 flavorific flavors including pineapple blurt?
4:00 🤓
No distractions...but what about drugs though?
Those teeth on Mike Mills though....
I wanted all of Michael Stipe’s clothes and caps back then.
Peter seems really edgy and uncomfortable, pissed off, maybe just the interview. It’s a band album but I always felt Out of Time is Bill and Mikes record.
I think it was more Peter's album. He wrote the music for Losing my Religion, and was the one who really wanted to make it more of an acoustic type album.
Buck's always like that
jeez i hope mike got his teeth fixed.
They’re cleaner but they’re still all fucked up lol
he had braces during the tour for Monster.
@@adamredmer1399 thank god.
Well we know Bill didn't quit to play basketball.......
Certainly not ideal to play basketball with British Invasion boots on lmao
Why wouldn't he do something with those eyebrows?
Because they’re his personal trademark!
Does Mike Mills own a tooth brush?
Peter - "We don't get cable and we don't have stereo." Mike - "We are easily distracted." This was 1990....before social media.....internet.....modern cell phones and computers. Probably why most of today's music sucks. Too many distractions.
Or a lesson on what one has to do to make a good record. Not a new formula. Go into the woods,
it was pretty poppy record. But I'd moved on from them by this point. To me they were always very much an 80's band.
Did they purify themselves in the waters of lake Minnetonka?
I’ve heard the algae prevents people from swimming there too often
@@kai326 ...that wasn't lake Minnetonka.
Not close to their best. I like about 4 songs on that album. Gimme any of the first six albums.
It’s easily better than a lot of their early records, and it was a massive album for a reason. They grew a lot from the early days as musicians and songwriters and their two most successful albums (Out of Time and Automatic for the People) are proof. 😎
Cool interview. I hate to be mean and superficial, but.... Mills teeth. Wow.
That is more than a unibrow , it’s mustache on his forehead
He’s more Oasis than the Gallagher brothers
Stipe doesn't have an american accent. Stipe speaks always slowly while Mills and buck speak with a strong american accent
Wtf does that nonsense even mean?
Huh?
Mike could have used his spare time to go see a dentist in Minneapolis.
Holy cow they were ugly 😂
Bass player seems he would be so annoying
Still bugs me that the album cover is so terrible tho
I hated REM as a teenager in the 80’s. Love them as a 50 year old idiot today
Mike's teeth. 🤢
