    The little XHData 808 blows my Sony ICF 2001 and my Yaesu FRG 7700 out of the water in every possible way but I want a big chunky version of it it with big switches and a big speaker.

    I love mine, I'm based on the south coast in hampshire, right near the solent. Even with the telescopic whip it comes with i've heard so much on sw , am and ssb as well. i sometimes use it with the mla 30 loop, and it performs nice as well

    You got me so convinced, I did get the xhdata. Couldn't love it more than I do. What an amazing piece of small equipment. I am the typical beginning shortwave listener mentioned in the video:) I had gotten an old analog grundig satellit 2400 off ebay just before that (for 180€ in an excellent state, who could refuse) but I needed a comparison point to make sure its shortwave capability is OK. This tiny xhdata is the perfect balance to that old analog receiver. Now I can work on building antennas:)
    Thank you so much, your video helped a ton. Keep on rocking.

    I have the XHDATA and love it! I am using an end fed long wire antenna. Very good reception for international radio stations. The number stations are relatively clear especially at night. I do miss my Realistic DX160 though! I am taking my foundation exam in three weeks so look forward to choosing a transceiver.

    I live in a ground floor flat in North London, bought the D-808 a few weeks ago. What a cracking receiver; MW is great, I can get Manx on 1368 kHz and BBC Radio Scotland on 810 kHz quite well in the evenings. Airband - I live under a Heathrow arrival flight path - is very good, also get Gatwick approach clearly, along with numerous other frequencies. SW is very good too, get a belting signal from China Radio's half megawatt Kashgar on 9760 and 9770 plus may other stations. The only weak spot is LW reception.

    Interesting demo. Shortwave radio is one of my favourite stations, that, Radio Delta, Mystery 21, Channel 292.. all keep SWL interesting. The Xhdata is a great radio for the price, you can’t go wrong.
    It works well with a passive YouLoop as well 👍🏼

    The only thing I didn’t like about my XHDATA was the muting/chuffing on tuning. Otherwise a nice little radio for the price. Have since sold it and bought the Tecsun PL990x which, although is a better radio, it is three times the price of the XHDATA.

      And that's why I gave the radio away. Too quirky for me. Memory pages, stepping through frequencies... complete pain in the *** and there are better radios that that chuffing mute on tuning. Sorry.

    I really do enjoy your channel. Thanks for Sharing your knowledge. I’m looking to buy a good short wave radio for under $200. I’ve been eyeballing tecsun as well as the one you just reviewed. I live in the hills of Northern California. Do you have any recommendations. Anything would be appreciated. Thank you.

    • @LONGINTHETOOTHtv
      @LONGINTHETOOTHtv  3 года назад

      Hi Nate, thank you for your kind comment. My shortwave knowledge is not vast but my idea is that if I discover something - I share it :) .. Most modern shortwave portables will pick up the same stations at about the same strength, the more expensive ones may look nicer and have a few extra features but will only do the same job. Be aware that if you want an external antenna on medium wave, your choices will be more limited .. if you want Tecsun, the pl880 is nice audio. The 990 and s2000 support ex mw antennas but those may break the bank :)
      Good luck with your choice, let us know what you decide..

    How does the analog volume stands over time? I had two Sony portable radios (both with analog tuning and volume controls) and both had
    developed a problem with analog controls in approximatelly 1 year. The slightest touch in volume control drastically changes volume levels.
    Same applies to tuning. I'm thinking about getting Retekess v115 due to its digital controls.

      I would recommend the XHdata . I did own the degen some time ago but the casing fell apart after being in storage ... cant speak for the tecsun but they have a good reputation. You cant go wrong with the XHdata for the price,,, Happy Radio ;)

    • @ge48421
      @ge48421 3 года назад

      The PL-330 has some advantages compared to the XHDATA: you can calibrate the frequency, it's smaller (useful for travel), and it can use an external antenna on MW (you can switch between the internal ferrite antenna and an external one for MW).
      Disadvantages: tuning is less convenient, the battery capacity is lower, and there's no air band.
      I prefer the XHDATA for listening to local FM stations because the speaker is larger and better sounding.
      I wish that either radio had used 3 or 4 AA (rechargeable) cells in stead of lithium ion cells, they're heavier but they're available everywhere and you can stockpile them for use when the power is out for a longer time.

      @@josehbhidalgo172 set the radio to MW. Push and hold the digit 3 key. When the radio shows CH-S it enables the external antenna jack for MW use. Note that both the MW and SW indicators are shown.
      Plug in an external antenna. Holding the 3 digit again turns this mode off.
